If you own a house in Sydney, then different story... Don't take these expences as a guideline in that case. You missed many items.. Why you didn't include overseas holiday expences, other interstate trip expences, as you need to bear those expences from your salary only... Other expences : like birthday party/gift, kids uniform, kids stationaries, even there is school fees in public schools (not same as private school), Roadside assistance for cars, Annual house maintenance (thermite protection, pest control, home & content insurance, vessels / decorations etc), overseas support fund if any, church support fund if any, monthly installments for cars, furniture's if any....the list goes on.... In my view, living expences for a family (hus, wife + 2 kids) who lives in Sydney, who owns a house with mortgage The monthly expense would be >= $10,000/- (Ten thousand Au dollars)

I did say uniform, gifts, money sent to home, trips, car maintenance etc. Also I said about having a mortgage is a bit different. Church fund and all are personal. Public school fees are nominal compared to private schools. Again it differs from person to person. As I said, this is a rough idea about the expenses. My actual expenses are far higher than that. Having a mortgage is not a bit different, Its a big difference...At least $ 1,500 additional than renting an apartment.. Also you mentioned your apartment rent is $2000/-month, though you are living with in 20km.. that's a big luck! Good on you...It could cost around $2400/- or more 1 year ago... One thing I forget to mention in my earlier comment is the annual council rate for those who own home, which is around $2000 annually..
