Free agency means that once a player's contract ends he can negotiate with other teams for however much $ and length of time he wants to, rather than being stuck with the team that he's currently playing for at the rate they feel like paying him

Also prior to the lawsuit, they had what was commonly referred to as the reserve clause, which gave your current team right of first refusal before you could even attempt to sign anywhere else. To equate it to modern American sports, everyone was on the franchise tag all the time.

Yeah, historically important. Prior to free agency, a player had no say whatsoever in where he played. The team that drafted a player had exclusive rights to that player forever. Players could try to force trades, but the reality was that they had no leverage. And more generally about the video- NBA players are predominantly tall beyond normal comprehension. In a playoff game yesterday between the Nuggets and Suns, 6'4" would have been the shortest player on the court for the Nuggets outside of a few minutes when some subs were in the game. I know there are a handful of soccer players 6'6" and above. The average height of an NBA player is above 6'7".

There are toy baskets for very small children that aren't as high, but even for elementary/middle school teams for players as young as 11 or 12 years old, the baskets are 10 feet high. It's a sport that you grow into.

Even though Larry Bird was drafted by the Celtics in 1978, he chose to take advantage of his 4th year in College. That made the college championship game possible, between Bird and Magic (Indiana State and Michigan State). They both went to the NBA the next year. Magic only played 2 years in college.

Before the Big O's case, even after a contract ran out, the team still retained the player's rights. He literally had to re-sign or retire. Since that case, players can choose where to play once their contracts are finished.

I understand this guy was going for the entire history in 5 mins but I'm pretty disappointed he thoroughly skimmed over the ABA merger, imo that merger is just as important to the NBA as the magic bird rivalry, Miken and Russell. Dr J (Julius Erving) George Gervin, Artis Gilmore ect were very important players for all of basketball, and that merger brought a lot of black audience to the NBA and added a lot of the style and flash the NBA is known for today

Free Agency is when your contract is over, you are then a "free agent" that can sign with any team, it works like this in all American sports, I'm surprised that is the first time you have heard of it, that is why there is so much player movement in American sports, with free agency and trades, you can only be traded when you are currently under contract

I'm sure someone else has commented it, but Free Agency is after contract. In some leagues, there is restricted free agency where other teams can offer a contract and the original team has the opportunity to match that offer or make a better offer.

Great reaction guys. The video did a good job giving a general history and stressed the importance of stars to drive the popularity of the league. The one point I think it missed was the addition or the stress in importance of the 3point line. There has been a real change in strategy from a drive the lane and mid range shots of the 80s and 90s to the spread and shoot a high volume of 3s. This has really changed the game and split fans who aren’t fans of the style of basketball it has created from those that do.

It really hasn't 'split fans' like this person is overexaggerating. Basketball has never been more popular by the numbers, it's not even close. The overwhelming majority of fans don't care about the difference and still enjoy the game. This point was massively overstated by the original commentor and isn't really accurate whatsoever.

I think most people would say that George Mikan was the first superstar in basketball. At 6"10 he dominated around the basket which influenced two rule changes. In one they widened the lane (think of it as the no-loitering area around the basket) and in the other they instituted a shot clock. The first was to keep players like Mikan from camping out around the basket and just staying there. The second was because some teams just played a "stall" game if they felt they were overmatched. The lowest scoring NBA game ever was won by the Ft. Wayne Pistons (now Detroit) 19-18 over George Mikan and the Minneapolis Lakers (now Los Angeles). Mikan scored 15 of the 18 Laker points.

of all the major American sports basketball is definitely the most superstar driven. it is a much smaller and more intimate arena than football and you can see every player’s face and emotions. also in basketball more than other sports, a star player can impact the game the most because there’s only 5 players at a time for a team and he can take every shot.

Players can’t leave in free agency while in the middle of contracts but once their contract is up they can sign with any other team. An exception to this are restricted free agents (RFA) who are still allowed to contract with other teams but the player’s current team has an opportunity to match the contract and keep the player. RFAs are mostly young players coming off their rookie contracts. Prior to free agency, players had very little say where they were able to play after being drafted.

Free Agency is a concept that is in all professional sports in America (NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL). After a player has completed their contract, they are free to shop their services to every other team in the league, or other leagues if that is an option(usually not). Depending on the sport and the league (and the players union's collective bargaining agreement) that player is free to sign with whatever team, but sometime there are strings, say his former team might have rights to match the offer, or get some draft compensation, etc. Also players have been known (usually superstar players) to have what is called a "no trade" clause written into their contract, allowing the players to void a trade if he doesn't want to be traded (though the player can waive this if he wants to leave town.

The contracts are either a player option or a team option…player option allow you to decide whether you want to stay or leave in the last year of your contract and team option is up to the team…players can also have no trade clauses meaning they can deny trades even if they ask to be traded they can deny it if it’s not the team they want to go to

Hey guys! Cool video there and reaction! In US sports all leagues had a period before the existence of free agency. In general what this meant for any sport that the team that drafted or signed a player at any point had very strong control over the player in the long term and they were pretty much forced to stick with the team with limited power to negotiate contracts. Eventually the players were able to secure more control and gained free agency meaning that once their contract is up they can sign with any team they choose to. Whether a player has a no trade clause depends on their contract. Throughout the years all of our sports leagues have had lockouts where players went on strike to secure better pay, benefits etc. Every league has a CBA agreement between players unions and the league of owners which dictates how much of the revenue is distributed between them, various rule changes, contract details, the exitance of a salary cap, playoff format etc. The NBA and MLB (and I think hockey as well don't really follow much) have very strong player union's in which all contracts are pretty much fully guaranteed. In baseball teams do have some extra control over players for the first 5 years but after that hit unrestricted free agency. In the NFL fully guaranteed contracts are a very new concept and most players only have a portion guaranteed. Additionally, the NFL and NHL have a hard salary cap meaning that teams cannot go over a certain number so there is a lot of complexity orchestrating a team and cutting players to save money and trades contracts etc. Anyway, just some background on stuff if you didn't know. I think it is quite different from the way European football leagues do it. Oh and FYI the 3-point line was only introduced to the NBA in 1979 5 years before Michael Jordan's first season. This single rule change in combination with other smaller ones has very gradually led to significant shift in the tactics of the game over even the last 15 to 20 years where some stats cannot be compared with the previous generation anymore.

Free Agency is at the end of a contract. At that point, any team can try to sign a player and compete salary wise for the player. Usually in last year of a contract, a team needs to decide to pay a new contract (most times a lot more money, because competition for the player) release to free agency at end of the season, trade him in his last year. Wilt Chamberlain didn't just score 100 points in a game, that year he averaged 50 points per game and 25 rebounds. And he averaged 48.5 minutes per game in a 48 minute game. He never fouled out and played every single game including over time games. At that time the NBA didn't keep track statistically of defensive plays such as steals and blocks. If they did, Wilt Chamberlain likely would have averaged around 8 or 9 blocks a game. Every single one of those stats is the most ever.

Bird was Drafted in 1978 But did Not Sign until 1979, He wanted to Finish His Last Year in School. The League Changed a Rule because of Bird Not wanting to Leave School after that.

The Harlem Globetrotters got their start in a separate league for black players, before the NBA integrated. They developed an entertaining display of ball handling that they'd put on before games and at halftime. When the NBA integrated in 1950, the separate league no longer had a reason for its existence, so most of the teams disbanded. The Globetrotters continued on as an exhibition team, playing entire games with the kind of ball handling and antics they originally used only in pre-game and halftime. Free agency means that once a player's contract expires, he is free to sign with any team that bids for his services.

Free agency in the Big 4 (NBA, NFL, NHL, MLB), I'm not familiar about MLS, but anyway, the way free agency works, once a player's contract expires, the player has the choice of either resigning with their current team, or choosing to go to another team that offers more money. Most teams attempt to resign a player before their contract expires, in the hopes that they not only don't leave the team, but get them for cheaper than if they let said contract expire.

Great video as usual guys. --- The US to send only college players to play in the Olympics. But countries like the Soviet Union, Yugoslavia, Spain, Italy, Croatia etc were sending their professional players to the Olympics. And for many US college players were able to compete and win even against their professionals. The Olympics were always amateur athletes but now pro's were playing for their counties and this was allowed. That is why the Dream Team was created. That era of the NBA had those great transcendent players like Bird, Magic and MJ. They raised the profile of basketball all over the world except the UK! I find it surprising that the best teams (excluding the US) and best international players come from Europe. Arguable the best players in the NBA today are European players like Nickola Jokic from Serbia, Giannis Antetokounmpo from Greece and Luka Doncic from Slovenia. This years NBA MVP was Joel Embiid from Cameroon, West Africa. The last 5 league MVP's have been European players. The game has gone global. Nowadays we have to send our best NBA players to compete with the likes of France, Spain, and those tough little Aussies. Would love to see Britain embrace it and compete at a high level.

Free agency in Ameircan sports means once your contract is over, the team no longer owns the rights to you. You can stay or leave goign to the highest bidder for your playing services. Until free agency was won, teams owned a player indefinitely until the team decided to get rid of them. Player were paid poorly and conditions were bad. Now teams compete for the best players and pay them exceptionally well. A team cna trade you and your rights in the middle of a contract but the new team has to meet all the terms of your contract. Sometimes teams will share the costs of a player to make a trade work out under the salary caps and revenue restrictions of the league they're in.

A player signs a contract for a length of time. Sometimes as little as 10 days. Generally, if you are good, you’ll get a contract for multiple years. In the old days the team who drafted you held exclusive rights to you as a player for life. Essentially allowing them to pay you whatever they wanted. Your only choices were play for the money they offered or not play at all. Free agency allows you to negotiate with other teams at the end of your contract. That opened the market up for higher salaries because owners were bidding for services against other owners. Now there is a salary cap which prevents billionaire owners to buy up all the talent. So free agency simply put the power of negotiating into the players hands instead of the previous system which was very lopsided in favor of the owners. This subject probably needs a full video in itself. The financial aspects of sport vary greatly between the NBA, MLB, and NFL, so I’ll try to find a good video for you look at which would explain the of theses differences. No, before the dream team it was America that didn't have pro's. We sent our college kids to olay against other countries pros. Usually grown men. America realized it wasn't fair and decided to send American Pros to compete.

The USA Olympic basketball allowed NBA players because the other countries were sending grown men professionals against USA college kids. USA were losing sending teenage amateur athletes. They had enough and said ok, we’ll let our professional players play

Dont they have free agency in Football (soccer)? Free Agency means that once a player's contract is over, he is allowed to sign with the team that offers him the best contract ($$$$$$$$$$$$$$).

teams work together to keep players wages down and make it so players really just had to play for whoever the owners wanted them to play for in the league. that's why in North America you have players unions to collectively bargain better deals. NBA and NFL have these histories merging with other leagues cause unlike baseball they are not legal monopolies. Anyone could just make another basketball league in the usa tomorrow. But two or more leagues fighting for players helps the players get more money and power. I don't think this is a issue you see in europe cause there are so many different football leagues so the players could just go to scotland or spain if they didn't get the offers they wanted in england.

The United States Olympic Committee lobbied Olympic Committee to allow Pro players to play for the USA in the Olympics by virtue of their contention that the rest of the World (in particular Eastern Soviet block Countries) were basically allowing pro's , although not in the traditional sense and definition given for labeling what a "professional athlete " was defined as, and were incensed at the Olympic Committee allowing grown men who were "wards" of the State in the Soviet Union under the cover of being in the military and compensation , meals , money, perks, etc were given to them which made them Professional athletes in the eyes of the USA. The USA on the other hand played true amateur athletes who were pulled from the college ranks 18-21 yr old kids. The idea being the Soviet players were together and trained and practiced together for years and years, while the USA amateur athletes were hastily assembled into a team and had limited time to prepare vs Soviet block teams. The nail in the coffin was the controversial loss by our youngsters to the Soviets in the last seconds in the Olympics to lose our streak of winning the gold medal in Olympic competition. When our men were allowed to compete against their men it was called the "dream team " in their inaugural Olympic appearance.

Once Black players were allowed to play against White players the game officially changed forever a Black player from my hometown of Philadelphia "Wilt Chamberlain" was credited for the First Dunk a move that was so dominant being that he was the only person that could do it 😂 this lead to the NBA banning the Dunk marking it as an illegal move. Over the years the league back tracked and allowed the Dunk, players like Julius "Dr.J" Erving in the 1970s made the Dunk the most exciting move in Basketball before Basketball GOD "Michael Jordan" took dunking to new heights in the 1990s!!

Unfortunately, the players today have taken "free agency" to the extreme... The WORST instance was when 3 of the top 5 players became free agents during the same offseason, and the 3 of them decided they would play together! All 30 teams came to them at a hotel in Chicago to pitch to them to play in their city. Miami "won" and got Lebron, Dwayne Wade, and Chris Bosh as a package. "Super teams" have always existed. But they were made organically, through drafting well and trades. Players joining each other mean the every year there are 2 or 3 teams LOADED with a half dozen stars compete for a championship and no one else has any... Unless you draft a rookie superstar. There is no competition. (It's gotten slightly better the last 2 or 3 years)

Sports leagues, baseball, basketball, and football for generations locked their players into life tine contracts. Players essentially became property of the organization, subject to terrible contracts because owners held all the negotiating leverage. If a player wanted out of his ck tract, he would likely find himself blacklisted and out of a job permanently within the league. Baseball found itself at the Supreme Court on more than one occasion over this controversy, and for decades the prevailing opinion was that if players could freely move from team to team, it would destroy the game because their contracts would baloon.. In reality, with the advent of cable viewing games, and with super teams bei g able to form, owners ended up receiving bigger pies, even if they had tk share larger portions than before. So, today, new players recoeve a rookie contract if they are drafted, or a standard contract if they are undrafted. The rookie contract is a lower ammount, and may give player options for another year at the end of their contract period. But this gives the rookie a few years to establish themselves, their abilities, adjust to the demands of the league, and determine their future value to an organization. Once the rookie contract expires, they become free agents. That's the key difference. Before, the contracts were always year to year, and players would only get paid at the half way point of the next season, forcing them to always resign with the same team or risk loosing the previous years income. Work contracts until recent years were always exploitative of employees. It was the norm to not pay an employee for a years worth of labor, until the end of the year. And often owners would just fire an employee a few days or weeks before the end of the contract to keep the gains and not pay the worker. And this was allowed because fighting it was too costly for the employee, no government agencies were set up at the time
