S1 E10 Spine Roll Fix Repairs on Comic Books by KaptainMyke. Very highly requested video. This episode features two books from the Golden Age of Horror. 1952 EC Comics, "Haunt of Fear 12" and "Crime Suspenstories 9".
Start with basic dry cleaning techniques before placing the books in a humidity tank filled with a half gallon of distilled water. After 24 hours the books need new centerfolds created by pressing the books damp and completely flat. You must use very minimal pressure during this stage so you do not crush the staples.
Both comic books are very brittle with heavy creasing. Haunt of Fear 12 has a spine roll with misaligned wrap and staples. There is a 3/4" spine split at bottom on Haunt of Fear 12. In this video I show you how important it is to pre-screen spine roll repairs on all comic books. If there is a pre-existing spine split, chances are the book is going to split even more. You must make the decision whether it will benefit the book or cause additional harm.
The other book, Crime Suspenstories 9, was a completely successful spine roll repair. With heavy creasing still present after 24 hours in humidity tank and spine roll repair pressing, both books will be undergoing a second pressing with heavy steel plates. All supplies can be found in the provided links below:

I'm not new to comics but I am to dry cleaning. I've now seen enough videos to go forward and buy a press. I am interested in any recommendations on presses as well as pros and cons of them. There is a local group near me, that do C&P's and I tried them on two books. I liked the job they did though there were still a few visible minor creases that I thought would have been gone after the service. So, I'd like to try my hand at it. I'm an OG and fanboy of the Marvel Silver age. I've also got plenty of books to experiment on. One of which made me look at this video specifically. I've got ASM #16 and it has spine roll and other issues (no pun intended?). Since Myke is highly recommended, I look forward to exploring his video library. Best to all.

@@pkeel7576 Thanks, yeah I work it to the best of my ability. I don't think the heat is very accurate. I can leave a newspaper page book (anything 90s and earlier) in the press literally for hours at 175 and it won't ruin the book. I think that tells me that the heat isn't really being contained properly.

When you mention the deep crease lines on the Crimes book, do you think it may benefit the lines if it was put in the humidifier again then pressed? I am just starting out but devouring info on cleaning and pressing atm. Love the concept of renewing old art!

astrocomics The humidity tank is much safer. The clothes steamer is dangerous and you can get moisture spots that bleed color from the cover or interior pages.

Is there a reason when flattening the book and when setting the new spine that you don't use SRP paper?
@kaptainmyke
@kaptainmyke 3 жыл бұрын
Since you are not using high heat for a long period of time, it's not completely necessary to do so. It's actually safer to use a tack iron and srp paper to flatten the spines. I will have a video of that method soon. S2E6 briefly uses that method if you would like to find out more. Thanks!

"very very light pressure" I don't think enough people understand this concept at all. theyre literally breaking their press trying to squeeze a flat book because of too much pressure

Will a normal press run smooth out very minor spine roll of an already centered book?
@kaptainmyke
@kaptainmyke 5 жыл бұрын
It might. I have seen it happen before with books that featured a slight roll. You do mean spine roll and not spine bump, correct? If you do mean spine roll, then yes - it's possible.

Whats your method on how to get spine ticks out? Theres not alot of info on the internet on spine ticks.
@kaptainmyke
@kaptainmyke 5 жыл бұрын
Using steel plates and 65 lb cardstock under both front and rear covers will push out most spine ticks. If that does not prove to be very effective, a tack iron and bone folder tool will push out spine ticks as well. If you use the tack iron and bone folder after using a little bit of humidity - press the book as usual with cardstock under covers to achieve the best results possible.

Ok this is great but I can't understand replacing all boards and paper on the flip. You know everything is clean since you just used it.
@kaptainmyke
@kaptainmyke 3 жыл бұрын
Since there is still the "human" element of this process, I always replace all paperstock and stacking layers. Hair, dust, dirt, and other particles can easily get stuck into your books if there is anything on the surface before you set the press machine for another cycle. In my experience, this is the best way and safest way to prevent damage or having to redo a book because a beard hair or booger got pressed into a cover.

Why don't you use the steel plate in this one?
@kaptainmyke
@kaptainmyke 4 жыл бұрын
You don't want to use steel plates typically when performing a spine roll repair so you don't crush the spine. Alternatively, you can flatten the spine and use a tack iron to flatten the book in order to form a new centerfold. This proves to be safer actually than using a press machine to flatten a spine for spine roll repair.

Don't understand the need to change the paper and backing boards when flipping!?!?... I do my own pressing and I used the same ones every time unless they get damaged, and I've never had a problem.
@kaptainmyke
@kaptainmyke 4 жыл бұрын
I would not reuse SRP Paper or backer boards. Once and done. This prevents divots, pebbling, hair, and dust particles from getting pressed into comic book covers. A sanitary workstation area is paramount to successful pressing.

Exposing a comic book to high humidity for 24 hours can cause mold, foxing, and rusted staples.
@kaptainmyke
@kaptainmyke 5 жыл бұрын
I agree, Mike. A low half inch level of distilled water in bottom of tank or even just a small cereal bowl barely filled with distilled water makes for a low-level controlled humidity environment. All or most of the moisture is pressed out when done properly and successfully. Welcome to the channel and thank you for your input.
