There have been a few baby steps in the right direction in a couple of places lately. KZbinr / lawyer Steve Lehto has covered a few. I had no idea how much danger I was in driving $20k across state lines to buy an RV a few years ago - from the police no less - and how lucky I was to have only been pulled over AFTER buying a car before that.

I expect it to eventually land in front of the SC; had this case been litigated 5+ years ago I wouldn't be worried about it being upheld.

That is unbelievable that anyone would be accused of selling drugs when it is US$40 worth. If there were kilos in there, sure, this brings it from insanely absurd to something I can comprehend although I do not agree with it even then. If someone pays their house off with legitimate cash like their mother did, the house is theirs. Imagine being addicted to heroin, and instead of treatment, your mother's house is almost taken (they got it back after being homeless for a while), you are criminally charged in a way that ruins your ability to find future employment (yay, more strain on social programs), and you get to meet up with all sorts of people who commit crimes there (criminal college). Good work, system. I understand having harsh penalties for people dealing drugs and trafficking drugs. US$40 worth isn't that. For the record, I don't agree with the "just legalize it all, maaan" stance for the hardcore stuff. Drugs can devastate a neighborhood, a community, a clique, and even an entire country. There was a time when 1 in 3 of every Chinese man on the planet used opium. That just isn't good for people in a society trying to help each other live out their life. Instead, I am for: 1.) Decriminalization of possession. No criminal record and no jailtime. 2.) Access to rehabilitation clinics (possibly mandatory like a rehab jail of sorts). And have proper treatment to help these people through intense withdrawals that can make someone, even if they are happy with their life, think of ending it due to the horrific experiences of withdrawaling EVEN WHILE TAPERING. There was a Ted Talk of a regular Joe married and all who had a car accident and said he considered that route as he tapered off. The talk was about how ill-equip our medical system is for transitioning people who needed pain medication off of pain medication. 3.) If applicable, any kind of safety antidotes to halt an OD. 4.) If possible and at least in places hit the hardest, purity testing sites free of charge. If they are to be addicted, they deserve not to use whatever dealers put in there to boost profits. Health is wealth. 5.) If possible and at least in areas hit the hardset, places where addicts can use with medical supervision rather than accidentally OD. Overall, being treated like humans with often a painful past and surely a tremendous struggle ahead is needed. Not treating someone like they performed a violent crime and then securing their fate as unemployed due to their permanent criminal record for all to see. This cycle then puts strain on many different social net systems, police bills, and prison bills rather than using a similar chunk of money to actually help people going through the worst times of their life.

In 1900 the elephant population was approx 10 million, by 1980 it had dropped to 1.3 million. Today there are approx 415,000. While I agree that poachers are the main issue, the elephant population would be under 100k if it weren’t for “pay for hunting” Botswana has managed to increase their elephant population by 10 times(over 200k now) because of the pay for hunting they offer. The country has stated multiple times that they would not be able to pay for this without the hunting. So unless you want to donate a lot of money every year(you won’t) this is how it has to be to save the elephants

I can't speak for the program you mentioned, but in other African countries and for other endangered animals, this type of program has not significantly increased populations while also selling off incredibly valuable land to companies that use the land to create these "hunting resorts" that cost lucrative amounts of money and only employ a handful of people. They are allowed to _build_ inside of *_park/reserve grounds_* for some reason. I also challenge you on the claim that people wouldn't donate the amounts that are earned via the hunting programs on the basis that the people advocating for the conservation of these animals are not the ones with millions of dollars who can afford to spend tens of thousands (or even $100k+) on an activity that only lasts a few days at most. I get the premise of the program, but it's hard to ignore the plain and simple fact that the people paying for these hunts could have just donated the money and *_NOT_* fucking killed an animal that they _know_ is endangered 🙄. Maybe instead of being allowed to hunt the animal, they could pay lucrative amounts for a reconstructed skeleton of that animal who died of natural causes that the park could create with remains they find. Or, if it's a particularly fresh death, have it stuffed by a taxidermist for them to take home, allowing them to brag that they killed it, but in fact having not done so. Maybe they could do a "Humane Hunt" (think "Catch & Release", but for mammals), but instead of using a real rifle with bullets that kill, visitors could only use a tranquilizer dart gun, allowing them enough time to go in, take a picture, and retreat to a safe distance, all while allowing the endangered animal to go on living. That would offer every theoretical experience that hunting to kill would with the only difference being that they'd not be able to take home a stuffed head for a trophy. If hunters can't be satisfied unless they get a stuffed head for a trophy, then that is just a plain admission that they are absolute babies, because the _only_ reason to want a trophy more than helping an endangered species continue living is the selfish desire for something to brag about because you feel insecure about something.

Preponderance of the evidence is pure cancer. More or less, you are assumed guilty and must prove innocence. I had a partner attack me, breaking my glasses. The only thing I did was defensively lift my hands to block the blows. I ended up being charged with domestic violence despite showing my broken glasses to the cops who came through to arrest me instantly and with no investigation (Which I took to court and won. They tried to give me some BS stipulated order of continuance where I take 1 day of anger management and "all charges are dropped." No. I was a victim, and I wasn't angry. Well, at the legal system I was. I eventually got all charges dropped for real, because again, I didn't do anything.). Eventually, more cops showed up where, and this is where it gets worse, I had a restraining ordered filed against me based on zero evidence whatsoever other than the pending court case where I am assumed innocent until proven guilty. I mean, how am I supposed to prove I do not stalk someone or pose a threat to someone? Do I have a go pro with months of video I submit? I am serious in that there was no evidence against me, because again, I was not beating people nor was I an active threat to anyone. If I had sent 20 messages or something, that would be one thing. Instead, naturally, I sent 0 messages, because as part of my criminal charges that all were eventually dropped due to insufficient evidence (because AGAIN I didn't do anything), there was some kind of automatic restraining order of a different name in place that comes default with domestic violence accusations at least in my state where any contact would result in another criminal charge. Yeah, I wanted to text, "Why are you doing this?" like anyone abused might wonder, but of course, I didn't. So yeah, guilty until proven innocent is incredibly messed up. For weeks, I felt sick to my stomach that someone I was in a relationship with abused me beyond verbally. I had a criminal case, a criminal restraining order, and a civil restraining order. I thought about the why for a long time. The only reason I could come up with is that she had a personality disorder like narcissistic PD. Whenever I would say she did something mean to me, she would agree based on the info I gave and then instantly, I mean within seconds, say that I did that stuff to her while dropping her previous acknowledgement of being cruel toward me. It was a sickness in her head -- classic and automatic and none-ill-spirited projection of an actual, diagnosable narcissist. That was the first narcissist I have ever experienced in my life, and hopefully, it will be the last. There is a subreddit all about people who had narcissistic parents. I couldn't imagine having this style of person over me for 18 years. People with PDs hurt others while also having something that should be treated -- it is how their brain naturally operates in an automatic fashion. When a narcissist projects and forgets their own behavior, that is their actual belief structure. They aren't doing it as a power play or to manipulate (although it is a strategy psychopathic manipulators learn) or for sadistic pleasure or anything else. They hear what they do, and they don't comprehend. Instead, that is what you do to them. With all that in mind, my best guess is after I dumped her due to the verbal abuse, she maybe actually believed I attacked her in some messed up way. Either that or it was your standard revenge thing some people seek at inappropriate times. In some cases, vengeance is justice like when a criminal is convicted of a crime they did. You've got both vengeance and justice. In other cases, a person can stop dating you, and there shouldn't be any vengeance, especially when the breakup is done in a civilized fashion rather than someone cheating on someone else during the active relationship or something.

You know what's weird I've never seen this episode I got busted in St Louis Missouri was a quarter pound of weed buy the DEA but no St Louis cop was involved in the arrest because of that I walked away with every penny I had in my f****** pocket add 2,800 cash now technically I had legally acquired that because I was a machinist that made really really good money back in 2002 that being said well now weed is legal in Missouri this story is phenomenally f***** up

0:55 "A limited democracy inside a communist country." Sorry for the rant, but this abuse of terms pisses me off... "Communist" only in its colloquial sense. No actual communist acknowledges them as anything even communist-adjacent, much less "on the path to communism." The CCP (Chinese Communist Party) might as well call itself the CDP (Chinese Dragon Party) for how realistically the name actually describes them, which is to say "not at all." It's really annoying that people still call anything "communist" just because they claim the label. It's like saying that every time Democrats are in power we have a democracy, or every time Republicans are in power we have a republic, or back when the Whig party was a thing that we had a whig. It's just braindead to assert that claiming to be a thing that you don't even somewhat RESEMBLE means that you are that thing. If you can't at least meet 50% of the standards then you can't even claim to be ideologically that thing "but not there yet," and the single biggest standard for communism (same with socialism) is FULL DEMOCRACY. The second? FULL DEMOCRATIC OWNERSHIP AND CONTROL of the means of production AND distribution AND exchange. You can add others in, but if you don't meet at least one of those two EVEN SOMEWHAT (like, not even "full" ownership/control, but something over 50%. No country even has more than 25% of their businesses as worker cooperatives. China has lots of STATE cooperatives, though, which means that the STATE owns/controls, and they have STATE unions, which means that the STATE is "kind enough" to let people join and have a small voice, but calling that "democratic ownership/control" is a massive farce) then the only people who will claim that you are that thing are people who 1) don't know what that thing means and don't care to learn, and 2) people who do know but are dishonestly portraying it. Seriously, apply the same standard of how people refer to China, NK or any other "communist" country to anything else and you'll find that words stop meaning anything useful. As a communist myself it pisses me off that people think of China as a "communist country" simply because they don't care to do anything more than repeat the talking points. Even the people of China reject that nonsense because, and this is something every anti-China person should know REALLY well by now, TIANANMEN SQUARE HAPPENED BECAUSE THEY WERE ANGRY THAT THE GOVERNMENT WAS NOT LIVING UP TO THE CLAIMS OF SOCIALISM BECAUSE IT WAS REJECTING DEMOCRACY. Socialism, the scapegoat of aesthetic (uses the phrases etc, but doesn't actually understand/believe in the ideas) commies and aesthetic leftists for why "that's not communism," is all about democracy, and anyone who says differently is just parroting talking points they've been trained to uncritically believe. Without constant democratization there can be no claim to be even socialist-adjacent (unless there's nothing left to democratize). People who read Marx, Lenin etc KNOW THAT, which is why so many people in China rose up against the government: they were preaching one thing and DOING THE EXACT OPPOSITE. Also because, you know, they wanted democracy instead of top-down control. Not just "because socialism," but "because we don't like not having a say." Democracy, the other term being abused, doesn't mean "vote for ruler," it means "participate in decision-making." A "limited democracy" means that participation in decision-making is limited to a select few...WHICH PERFECTLY DESCRIBES ANY WESTERN DEMOCRACY, whether "republic" or "constitutional monarchy" or whatever other names of systems you want to cite. The people who get to participate in decision-making are a tiny minority and always include the economic/cultural elite (even if they do it through high-level influence rather than directly. Like in the US, where the rich and powerful merely need to tell our "representatives" OR OUR SUPREME COURT JUSTICES what they want and things will get done regardless of public opinion or even outright demand). Being allowed to vote for who rules is nothing more than being told "your voice matters, now SHUT UP and let the adults talk!" Republics etc are "democracies" that practice "democracy," but ONLY for that select few. That's as "limited" a democracy as China has. Or North Korea, for that matter. We just put on better makeup to trick people into thinking that we're more democratic. And no, individual freedoms DO NOT make a place more/less democratic, just more/less free in certain ways. The scope of democracy, the fullness of democracy, is decided by the participation in decision-making, to what degree they are allowed to participate (full efficacy vs "you can speak but your vote/voice doesn't impact the the decision"), and literally nothing else. Democracy is abused like the wife of a raging drunk all the time by Western societies because people are trained to think "vote for ruler" is "democracy" but "only if we do it. If anyone we don't like does it then it's not democracy, it's authoritarianism."

look, if we're going to stop glorifying Columbus (which i'm NOT arguing against), it's only fair that we also stop making movies that depict pirates as roguish heroes instead of murderous rapists
