S1 - Ep 103 - Amazing Blockhouses at the Wolseley Railway Bridges!

We were so disappointed when we saw that the Bainskloof Pass was closed, but we had the opportunity to visit Wolseley because of that, which was fantastic. What a lovely town! We also were very lucky to see the blockhouses the British built close to the railway bridges. Those blokhouses are amazing never heard if them until now. The water through the town is very clever. Very beautiful.

This is the town we farmed from the age of 10. We farmed on the Ceres road about 2km from town. Cycled to school winter and summer. Good years. The earthquake in 1969 devastated the area and lots of the cape Dutch houses were demolished. Sad sad. The river coming from ceres and joining two spring rivers in the mountain pass end up being split by white bridge. One part runs through town and end up in bergriver and the other in Breede river. The only town in the southern hemisphere to do that. If you climb up the big peak called Mostert hoek then you can see table mountain. The whole town sits on a huge under earth lake.

Thats an interesting Church and fascinating steeple. When I saw it from afar, I thought thats just like Ohrigstad's kerk, but close up its nothing like the one in Orighstad at all.Thanks for showing us.

There’s a NG Kerk with a similar “Viking ships bow” design in the suburb known as De Tijger in Parow North. I also enjoy looking at all of theses churches , especially in the country towns , as they tell the stories about the towns where they are situated. I am similarly impressed with Wolsely which seemed both bustling and clean.

It's good to hear that you're also fascinated by churches, I just can't seem to drive past, especially the ones in the smaller towns. Each of those congregatations have such a rich history and the buildings reflect this. A lot of these communities were also built around the church and they still see it as their foundation. Wolseley was an unexpected stop for us and we were so happy that we did. Thank you for joining us on our travels! 😁

Thank you! We actually turned down the 'Residents Only' road and almost took a chance, but decided against it. It's the second time we've tried to drive this pass, the first time was in October last year. Hopefully it'll be open next time we're in the area. 🤞🏻
