We were so excited about visiting Cape Town on this day. It was the second new year and this was when the Minstrel Carnival was taking place. Seeing them up close for the first time was absolutely fantastic. The atmosphere was tangible. Everybody around us, and us of course, couldn’t wait for them to arrive. They took a break right where we were standing and we had a good look at their colourful make-up and costumes. When they started again, their energy was up and the music was loud! We could feel the beat thumping with our hearts! After that we took a drive to Table Mountain and Signal Hill to see the cableway and the view of one of the most beautiful cities in the world. It was a phenomenal day! #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #capetown #westerncape #carnival#tablemountain

The Mother City. I was born at the foot of Table Mountain at Strawberry Lane in Constantia on my Oupas farm right next to the Moslem shrine. Even after we moved to Bellville we still visited Cape own regularly. So many memories of my late husband, places we frequented together. Sometimes I cant believe he is gone, I expect him to pop round the corner with "Hullo Hogwash!" Its been three years. i will never stop missing him. We had so much fun in CT and Seapoint. Lovely to see the troepe once again! What a joyful noise! How beautiful the city is from up there. I belonged to the Kirstenbosch society and could visit as often as I liked, and would regularly beetle up that berg! Views are amazing. I am so blessed to grow up in this. Yes I have been to the Long Street Baths....heh heh...Where are my young days when th Univercity bus would drop me off at the top of the Gardens and I would walk down and through the centre, along Adderley, visit Garlicks and Stutterfords and Cranfords Books....oh dear! Where have the years gone!

The Mother City is indeed a special, magical place. You should hang on to every one of those memories you've shared with us today, they will feed your longing for your beloved husband. 🤗 I thought you may enjoy the minstrels! It was such a vibe, their sense of fun and joy is unparalleled and we're so glad we got to see them up close for the first time! 🥳 Yup, Stuttafords and Garlicks brought back memories of shopping with Sonia's mom and aunt. The years have just flown by too quickly, you are so right! We think you'll enjoy seeing some places in our next video too, hopefully they bring a smile to your face! 😁🚗

In 1966 my father packed myself and my elder brother into the back seat of his Ford Fairlane and drove us throughout the night (1000km or 600 miles) to Cape Town to see the Cape Carnival. What absolute joy of life (joie de vivre) those minstrels provide.🙌

Hello Curtis and Sonia, Thanks for taking me along to see the carnival again, last saw it many moons ago. And Sonia you are a good driver, at least you drive not too close to the edges (tongue in cheek, sorry Curtis). And Signal Hill brought back many memories, not to mention the daily cannon firing. Just below the carpark, adjacent to the colourful houses that you have shown, is Tamboerskloof. Did a military camp there, used to be a weapon depot inside the mountain. For training we had to run up to Signal Hill, along the route you took. Luckily was much skinnier then. Thanks once again, brilliant photography. See you next time.

Great that you could join us for a drive through this mesmerising city! The carnival was an intense and captivating experience! 🥳 Sonia is indeed a good driver! I always mock her and say she could probably drive before she could walk, she's an absolute natural behind the wheel! 🥰🚗 We were absolutely bushed that evening from all the excitement, but probably not quite as tired as that training of yours up Signal Hills sounds. I'd rather take the car, thank you very much! 😨

Thankyou so much for taking me on a trip to see once again places so well known to me, such lovely memories...if you want to go up the mountain by cable car on a sunny, windless day, you need to be there very very early...otherwise you will find no parking and an endless queue 😊...thankyou once again for a trip down memory lane.

So glad you enjoyed taking a drive through this magical city with us! 🥳 It is always spectacular and it was an absolute joy to take in some of the breathtaking views this place has to offer. We've been up the cableway several times in the past, but normally do so in off-peak season when there are no or very short lines. It was great to see people from all over the globe at the cableway though, everyone there to admire this grand old lady of South Africa. Thanks for coming along! 😁🚗

I have to admit that before playing this video this morning, I thought to myself that this video isn't going to be as great as your videos when we discovered Kliprand with you or Strandfontein or any of the places that you have transported us to. However you have really outdone yourselves this time. That shot of Lionshead, when leaving Signal hill was spectacular, the view of the colourful homes and buildings of the Bo-Kaap. Then we were treated to the grand architecture of the "library building", the "high court" building and we were treated to Sonia's delight and excitement when seeing those buildings. I do think that the City and Tourism should do more to promote the Minstrels Carnival and to also make it a more user friendly experience for the spectators. One can see that the participants put their heart and soul into their performances, it just seems as if the City is good at road closures, traffic officer deployment and crowd control, however it is lacking in visuals that should adorn the streets, big screens and other spectator pleasing installations plus food stalls, markets and other crowd pulling activities 😀. Thanks for this incredible experience...that shot of Lionshead is legend!

We knew that this series of videos will be completely different to any we've done before, but are now convinced more than ever before that beauty is to be found everywhere, if we just look for it. I'm glad you took the plunge and decided to watch the video, despite having reservations at first. 🤩 I'm glad you enjoyed some of the shots of the mountains and the city, it truly is a place too spectacular to even comprehend and we realised it all over again that day! Sonia loves herself an old building any day of the week and they seemed just a little more special being in her favourite South African city! I chuckled at the squeals of delight when I edited the video. 🤣 The carnival was incredible! 🥳 We were so lucky to find a parking spot fairly close by and the vibe was just next level. I like your suggestions of big screens, food stalls and such. For those who aren't able to walk long distances and who weren't lucky enough to find parking close by, this fantastic up-close-and-personal experience we were able to have, would be completely out of reach. Loads of people were also thirsty because of the long wait between the groups and there weren't any food or drink vendors, at least in the area we were in. It is such a uniquely Cape Town experience! The smiles went right around our faces for hours afterwards! 😁🚗

I recall in my youf how we used to journey in to town to watch the Coon Carnival. Stand for hours and the procession also took forever ! The last 10yrs, plus, the only way to get onto the cable car up the mountain is to pre book. The car queue usually goes all the way down to Kloof Neck. Such a lovely city with so many places and so much to see. I am lucky to have family there so have aplace to stay when visiting. Always a special place ! We were ther in October and yearn to go back again.

The carnival was just fantastic! 🥳 We've never seen it in person before and being so close to all the sights and sounds, was just a special experience. There was about an hour gap between the two groups and we believe the festivities went on into the early morning hours! 🤩 Cape Town is indeed a magical place. We live so close, yet don't see it often enough. That will change now. We hope you get to visit again soon too! 😎🚗

That was wonderful I enjoyed watching them preform, gave me goosebumps and my heart is full of pride and love for SA. People can say what they want about SA, but there are 2 things I think most of us can agree, and that is the natural beauty of SA and the talent and creativity the afrikans are, from singing, dancing playing instruments and how creative they are by making and building things with their own hands just by using recycled things, I have so much respect from them. CT is such a colorful place, from buildings/houses, people and the food. There is just such a pleasant atmosphere about CT❤️

Hi did not make it to the backseat today but atleast could see Capetown again. Very near to you in the Strand there is a Kramat at Melkbosstrand. If I am correct, at the different Kramat's there are burried a piece of a very important prophet, prophet Mohammad (taking a chance here). His pinky are burried in the Kramat at Melkbos. So folklore went. Back in the day you could see the Melkbos Kramat from the highway leading to Sir Lowries because it was still open fields then. I believe Stuttefords does not exsist anymore but it seems that Shoprite took over the building and it still look like it did back in the day. My dad always told the story of the two gammate that were sitting on the stroeptrappies of the old Post Office building on a real SouthEaster blowing day when a Scotsman in his traditional clothes came past, went round the corner and the wind made him lose his footing and he fell. Said the one gamat to the other one "broer kyk net hoe val so n bul van n madam" Thanks for the nostalgic memory tour you gave me. At the end of the video I saw that they still did not finish the one flyover. I think they are stll figuring out were the engineers of the 1960's wanted to fly over to and good to see the Three Tower complex still standing against Devils Peak. Onwards travelers. Be safe.

I wasn't aware of a Kramat in or near Strand, but have checked online and the Kramat of Sheikh Yusuf is located at Macassar which is very close to Strand. 🕌 Melkbosstrand is quite a distance away from Strand and Sir Lowry's Pass, but very close to Bloubergstrand. I couldn't find anything online about a Kramat there though. 🤷🏼‍♂️ Glad you enjoyed our tour of Cape Town, it was a fantastic experience and we thoroughly enjoyed seeing the sights and sounds of the city and especially the minstrels on that particular day! 🥳🚗

Thank you so much! 🥳 I only use my regular everyday cellphone to film with, a Samsung S22 Ultra, mounted on a regular selfie-stick. I found that to be completely adequate for our needs. 📱😁

Thanks for showing the klopse. In all my years, been once I think. Your pronunciation of kramat was a little off. But don't ask me to spell it phonetically. Or did you get help in the pronunciation and I have never heard it pronounced like that? There numerous of them scattered around CPT - Constantia, on road from Camps Bay to Llandudno, Signal Hill. Border of Khayelitsha and Mitchell's Plain I think off Spine Road. Other's too. I just don't know where all are.

We loved the minstrels, it was a super cool experience. 🥳 I'm not too fussed about pronunciation as we film in-the-moment. Kramat is pronounced with the accent on the first syllable and a long 'a' sound, as in Kraamat. 🕍
