S1 - Ep 500 - Philadelphia, Western Cape!

We were pleasantly surprised when, on our way to Philadelphia, we passed through the charming settlement of Kalbaskraal, located at a railway junction of the same name. Arriving in Philadelphia, we were thrilled to explore and spend the evening in this quaint village. Despite its small size, we were delighted by the friendliness of the locals and the well-maintained historical buildings, houses and gardens. Wanted to tell you my wife’s family stayed in the region and farmed there I think Kalbaskraal was the farm They have been there for something like 102 years and the one family member is still staying in town

The pristine tiny village with beautiful old buildings, a beautiful old church and magnificent old blue gum trees inbetween just blew my mind. Even the modern homes in the newer area seemed to blend in perfectly. Lovely inhabitants too. I wish I could have bought that melktert - it looked divine. What a gem of a hamlet, wonderfully captured in your drone coverage Curtis. Die Mostert Huis guesthouse was the perfect end to your visit. Many thanks.

A lovely town to visit with friends and family! We've had the most wonderful family lunches at The Pepper Tree. Love those trees! There were interesting shops in many of the houses. I love Magic Minerals! The big house you passed by on your way in has a restaurant: Droom@Die Meul. It is currently closed for renovation though. Thanks for a great video!

Behind the church is a house where Pieter van der Westhuizen used to live. He was a famous South African artist. The roof of his house was painted in a bright blue and it was called Die Blou Dakkie. I had the privilege of meeting him and his wife a couple of times. His artwork fetches hundreds of thousands of rands. A very special man.

Was originally known as Die Meul. Pieter van de Westhuizen owned the building, purchasing it after the mill was shut down in the 70’s. I am not aware if he still owns it but it is used as a restaurant, Droom, which opened last year. Only open though on a Saturday and Sunday for lunch.

Great video, we visit Philadelphia often as its literally on our doorstep. You guys definitely missed out on a delicious melktert, they have of the best. The Pepper Tree has a great deli too, try their delicious "Kudu Burgers" ...Magic Minerals is a magic place and a half. You must have been bushed..Koringberg in the early morning, then Moorreesburg, then Malmesbury and then Philadelphia...all in one day. Your guest house is absolutely stunning...the garden and hedges and your room. Romans Pizza, Lion Lager and a beautiful setting, whats not to like about that😊..

Well I have never seen a "maketaan" standing upright but my parents use to make "maketaan konfyt" from those. But it was not an easy job. And yes it is a watermelon but not sweet at all. In our days it was not called maketaan, but if I now say what the real name was then I will probably be in big trouble. And of course....congratulations on your 500th episode! What a ride we have had from the start! Very interesting place Philadelphia....and the food I have had there in the past was fantastic....really worth a visit.

Hi guys stunning little village so quaint horses roaming free and onl y a few miles away from Cape Town. Tranquil sleepy vibe. Loved the postoffice and old bank now a gift shop .the general dealer with those delicious milk tarts what a friendly guy fitting for a place called philadelphia ( brotherly love) the old houses were stunning but I also liked the new buildings with the clapper boards .as you said lots of guesthouses and yours was amazing with the four poster bed and tree climbing chickens. We'll guys I must congratulate you on the 500 VIDEO 🎉🎉🎉 it's been a apsolute pleasure traveling with both of you the work you have done must be preserve for future generations it's so important in these fast changing times. My grandfather used to grow a melon for his cattle as fodder but I cannot remember what it was called. The white portion was very thick and my grandmother made beautiful konfyt with this.

This is my neighbouring town. It's a pity, you couldn't visit two interesting places: DROOM at die Meul restaurant at the entrance (what you thought was a private residence; an old skuur (barn) that was converted into a trendy restaurant), and the Pepper Tree restaurant -- a much more down-to-earth operation, with a cosy atmosphere at night, outside under the stars, with fires & blankets, enamel bekers and a real feel of SA platteland living (including hearty SA plaaskos). The town has a split personality: the trendy half (literally, the other side of the proverbial track), for city slickers seeking a more relaxed, rural lifestyle (developed in the last 10 years), and the half where the Volk live -- the rural people of the village (pity, you didn't go down there); there you would have seen the 'life' of the village....

We were only in town on a late Friday afternoon and evening and had to move on early the following morning. We understood from our host that no restaurant will be open that evening, so we bought pizza before we arrived in town. 🤷🏻‍♂️ I believe Droom is only open on Saturdays and Sundays for lunch, but is currently under renovation. I film out of the car window and have had my camera almost grabbed a few times in areas where there are many pedestrians on the road, so we'll always steer clear of such areas. 🚙

We used to grow those watermelons on a farm to suck up excess water. The used to have a very unpolitacally correct name back then and were used for making konfyt.

This town is so typical of the SA platteland: the central feature being the Dutch Reformed Church, the architecture of all DRC church buildings (with features practical for snow), along with the Cape Gable style, the simple structures with tin roof, the unpretentiousness of the place & the people. Unfortunately, lots of these places are being "discovered" by city folk and 'sanitised' to increase their market value. An alternative lifestyle is slowly emerging on the peri-urban borders of SA cities in the country -- at the cost of of authentic SA lifestyle...

We explained very clearly in Episode 480 that it's never our goal to include every single place of interest in a town. It's simply impossible, especially in the limited time we have available to travel. You should go and visit yourself. That way you can see everything you want to. 🚙😁
