Leaving Plettenberg Bay and backtracking to Knysna we found a gravel road which took us through the heart of the Outeniqua Forest on the Garden Route. As we were driving we saw many massive trees and then realised they were yellowwood trees. In the Garden Route National Park was the King Edward VII big tree. This tree is over 800 years old and is more than 40 meters high and has a circumference of seven metres! On our map we saw a museum and decided to visit. What an experience it was to see an entire elephant skeleton which was found in the forest and is now on display. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #outeniquaforest #elephant

Wow that was amazing the tree. The size is fantastic, no wonder they have to camp it off, it is so precious . Many appreciate it others not. Knysna is marvellous. !!!

The comings and goings that that tree must've witnessed, must read like a history book. So special that it is still being preserved and protected to this day.

Just outside Wilderness is the little dorpie Hoekwil, and a little further on is a wonderful Big Tree. Well worth visiting. I think it is a Yellow wood. And a wonderful walk through native forest

I think I can remember seeing 'Hoekwil' on a board, but I'm not sure. We'll try to remember to have a look next time we pass there. This big tree was also a yellowwood, absolutely incredible to think how old it is. It is humongous! 🌳

It really was. I can just imagine those forests long ago, when elephants were still roaming freely.

Knysna forest got a new meaning to me after reading the Afrikaans book "Kring in die bos" by Daleen Mathee. She had two books, and that gives the forest a different life from another time period. You will see it with other eyes. The bush people had a very hard life in the developing years, early 1800's. Wonderful history of endurance and passion.

Thank you for the info, we can only imagine if the forest could talk. We just wish there were more elephants around today. If at all possible, that would make the forest just that much more magical.

I had a good laugh by myself at the washing lady's comment "no thank you, I'm in a hurry today'. A gem!!
