Many years ago I worked for a company that made equipment for petrol stations. The software had various safeguards against unreasonable input and one was that an octane value of less than 80 was considered a faulty entry. Of course, we ran into problems when we wanted to sell to the Soviet Union (like a said, long ago...) and it turned out that their standard was 76 octane! No wonder those old Ladas bellowed smoke...

This is precisely why the BMW GS series and similar models from Europe are not good overlanding motorbikes. The compression on those bikes are 12.5:1. You will need premium 95 octane. The Himalayan has a relatively low compression ratio of 9.5:1, so it will run on third world crap fuel mostly fine
@pS-eo2wi5 жыл бұрын
Bmw 12.5: 1 CR and 80 octane fuel with very retarded ignition...how long before burned exhaust valves etc? Do we really need this ultra tech anywhere?

You can still run BMW GS on 87 Octane. It just gave u bad mileage and range.
@rottfazri67085 жыл бұрын
mean that high octane more mileage? really huh
@sumit_john5 жыл бұрын
Rott Fazri a fuel octane rating is a fuel’s resistivity to auto ignition. You can compress an air fuel mixture of 95 octane fuel to a greater pressure than 80 octane fuel. More compression means you can get a more powerful combustion in the cylinder which translate to more power and fuel economy. If you put 80 octane fuel in an engine which requires 95, the fuel will auto ignite before the spark plug ignition. The shock wave from this ignition crashes into the piston or cylinder wall. This is known as engine knock. Engine knock can severely damage pistons, connecting rods, and possibly the intake and exhaust valves. Most car makers install knock sensors to alleviate this problem.

Not let down..!!, sorry i may sound sarcasm here, but the fact is RE Himalayan has let her down for two technically silly/simple reason in her ride few days back, one is no tubeless tyre (tyre puncture in Malay) and clutch plates worn out and needed to be changed just around 10 days back. RE should have provided tubeless tyre option (ofcourse with mag wheel) for customer are more on tar and not so decent bumpy road. Not everybody way much into off road tracks for spoked wheels. @@kuldeepk8482 The type of tire is her choice..the clutch plate issue is 100% her fault because she put "handle risers" on the bike without installing a longer cable. This made proper clutch adjustment impossible...So I am amazed at how reliable the RE is!!!..I have rode for 59 years and never had a bike that made this kind of mileage without incident..One thing though..I am concerned that she hasn't shown "chain adjusment" ..Usually this would be a 2-3 hundred mile adjustment??...otherwise she will destroy the Primary and Wheel Sprockets????
@avadhootv5 жыл бұрын
These things could have happened to any bike. Spoked wheels are just more reliable and if one needs one can convert spoked rims to tubeless. Her tyre puncture happened after stock tyres were completely worn out after more than 10000 kms of continuous riding. Right now she is carrying extra set of tyres, if it were mag wheels, she would have needed 2 exrtra rims also as you can not fix bends in them.
