Some good ol fashioned 1st party testing! Good video thanks

I literally got a soft foam helmet from Triple 8 in the mail that looks EXACTLY like the one in this video. The first thing I noticed was it didn't have fusion foam like my biking helmet. I was ordering pads from Triple 8 website and thought I'd grab one of their helmets out of convenience. It was super uncomfortable so I'm sending it back, but while I'm looking at other brands I ran across this video that is reinforcing my doubts about my Triple 8 helmet. I'm glad I didn't use the soft foam helmet because I definitely don't want another concussion in my life.

@@FellowshipOfTheString dont hit your head in a soft foam helmet. that helmet has a sticker on the inside that says this helmet is not certified. soft foam helmets fail ALL current helmet safety standards . the soft foam helmet cannot pass the astm (multiple low impact test) and it fails the cpsc test (single high impact) .

I had the retro s1 helmet, if I didn’t have this helmet on I would’ve cracked my head and would’ve gotten a cracked skull. Cool thing is I didn’t feel little to no rattle in my head even with the foam cracking 😂 trust me these helmets are crazy good

I honestly don’t know why soft foam helmets even exist... the false sense of security is more dangerous than no helmet at all.

Does this machine somehow test the amount of potential brain rattle involved... I understand that the polystyrene helmets to disperse the impact to the skull; but generally speaking, most brain injuries occur from the brain rattling inside the skull... When the side by side comparison is shown, the certified helmet bounces a lot more than the non certified helmet. Would love to know more about how it all works :)
@Bikernasty3 жыл бұрын
Some companies have MIPS helmets that actually reduce rotational force as well
@seismystic71593 жыл бұрын
There's gonna be "brain rattle" regardless. Have you ever seen the physics ball swingset? The little pole with 5 balls lined up by strings, you pick one up, drop it, and the force goes through to the other side, and they bounce back and forth? That little trinket nearly replicates the basic means of force transfer between two objects because you can insert padding between one set of balls and there will be less force to go through. That's where the s1 helmet excels. "Brain rattle", in a case of impact, is going to be a dependent variable. It'll only be decreased if the initial amount of impact force is decreased Not only that, but it's good that the helmet can take such impact. A fire chief who now owns his own skate shop near me witnessed someone getting hospitalized because he was wearing a triple 8 comfort helmet, and the helmet pretty much collapsed on impact and impaled the top of his head

Soft foam would be better at low impact, it's a trade-off either way Edit: just found Giro and Bell helmets make what's called spherical technology the mips is the soft foam not the hard plastic yellow layer.
@letsgoletsgoletsgoletsgoletsgo2 жыл бұрын
No dude MIPS is the yellow plastic that allows the helmet to slip and slide a bit. Go look it up the same helmet MIPS vs no mips what's missing is that yellow plastic

I wear soft foam helmet for the longest time rollerblading. Last week I wear the same helmet skateboarding and headed down the hill, wiped out and hit my helmet, just above the cheek bone on the corner curb. The soft foam basically did nothing, the plastic shell crushed into my skull and broke my cheek bones. Wish I watched this video prior. I just purchased S1 Retro. So guys, don’t be like me. Please wear the appropriate rated helmet for the sport. Cheers.

The triple eight one had only sweatsavers, not foam, it sucks, it's basically a piece of plastic, but triple eight gotham is an equal competitor, but still the main think for skate helmets is to have ASTM F1492 certificate.

Hi Dunderhead5000 ! S1 Mega Lifer Helmet is triple certified CPSC, ASTM (multiple impact) and AUS/NZS 2063:2020... actually quadruple certified CE EN 1078 (certified for Europe) We have the Mega available in some cool color- Leopard, Purple, White w Check and Black Glitter . And working on the interchnage visors - hopefully 2023.

Do the different size headform weigh different? because that has an impact... A lighter head will not crush the same hardness foam at the same speed.

I know the Triple 8 Certified Sweatsaver Helmet has soft foam but it also has EPS foam --isn't having EPS foam one of the main factors for what makes helmets safe? What makes S1 safer or better than the Triple 8 Certified Sweatsaver helmet? Asking sincerely before I choose which one to buy.
@letsgoletsgoletsgoletsgoletsgo2 жыл бұрын
Tradition eps helmets are only able to take 1 big hit and then it's going into the trash . S1 claims it's special eps foam is able to take multiple medium impact as well as 1 high impact . So it's actually rated for both cycling and skateboarding.
