I am so glad I found this video. I’ve changed several of these pumps on those trucks.. as most of us.. I was removing the entire bed… from start to finish was done in an hour tops… Thank you ..!!!!

I like the comments saying it's easier to drop the tank. The straps are usually rusted 1st. Then you have to disconnect the lines before you can completely drop the tank spout or filler disconnect, the cover around the tank. 4 bolts/ filler boot disconnect and raising the bed is fast and easy. Then you only have to disconnect at the pump. More time than not most pumps gomout when there is alot of fuel in the tank. Big mess dropping a tank in your driveway and not to mention lifting it back up. Having enough room to.drop the tank also means having you whole truck up in the air. That's alot more work. I like this method alot more.. the post is a great one and an option I always choose when working on a basic truck pump.

Cliff, I'm really impressed by your abilities! You do it right! You're first class all the way! I'm a former tool&die maker, super stock drag racer (record holder) engine builder, chassis builder and like you I can do about anything. I'm going to replace my 1998 S10 fuel pump tomorrow using your method of raising the bed. I have never seen this! You and I think alike ingenuity and creativity. The main difference is I'll be 69 next week so it may take me a little while longer. I saw a C6/C7 in your garage. I own a 2004 C5 under a cover with 17000 miles on it. Thanks and Godspeed!

the rear light wiring cables ground out on left side under bed with harness. Unplug harness and unscrew ground wire. after you tilt bed up you can slide it bed over rear wheels giving you more room.. great video

Looks like a pretty straight forward job. My fuel pump died on me today. I should have noticed that the pump was dying on me because it was becoming harder to start. I checked the fuses and relays and they all seem just fine. It's just that fuel pump that's gonna have to come out. I like that I don't have to completely remove my bed and propping it up like I saw here is a great idea. It's nice that replacing it won't cost a lot.

I would highly recommend doing this or cutting the bed. I’m dropping the tank and everything is breaking not to mention the driveshaft and the exhaust has to come off just to get to the fuel lines. Big mistake on my part.

Just did this job today on my 2003 Sonoma ZRX..because I needed to replace the fuel tank pressure sensor which was throwing a P0446 code. Just to add to this video. The bed weights about 70 lbs but is bulky.. If you have 2 people -- you will be able to tilt it right up; also there is a channel on the frame where the bed bolts in that the is perfect size for a 2 x4.. place one 10 inch 2x4 on each side and you will obtain excellent clearance; on my truck the fuel tank filler hose bolts were 7mm and there were only 3 of them on my truck; the 8 bed to frame bolts are 15 mm; and there was enough space to remove the front 4 using my Milwaukee 1/2 drive mini impact . I did not have enough space to use the impact for the 4 "rear" bolts and had to use a rachet.. This method worked perfectly. I initially tried to lower the tank down but due to rust -- the 15 mm strap nut was frozen and I did not want to create additional problems... Great video.

Your doing it the hard way. First of all, I have 4 vehicles, so I have a road service plan with 135 miles of free towing. I wouldn't have had to pay a tow bill unless I was a long way from home. As for actually replacing the pump, my 1993 has a step bumper on it, along with a dual exhaust that sticks out from under that. Removing all that would be a nightmare. So instead, I brought 3 coworkers home one Friday evening, We lifted the bed straight up and off, and set it on four 5 gallon buckets. I replaced the pump over the weekend, and they came back Monday evening and we set the bed back in place. I bought them a couple cases of beer for their trouble.

Tilt bed by myself, replacement in an hour, single bay garage. Your way gives more working room but it isn't easier. It took all weekend and required four people and more space. It also cost you several cases of beer.

+Lestat I've replaced pumps both ways. In my opinion, this was much easier than wrestling the tank full of gas. I had to remove 4 bolts, and loosen 2. They weren't rusty at all, and easily broke free with a breaker bar. After that, I just used a jack to lift it. I think it took me an hour and a half to do this. That includes record time, and doing the wiring necessary. Quick and easy.
