The video starts with Rola waiting impatiently in her room. Due to stress, she exhibits R/R. The keeper is checking if there is anything thrown into their enclosures. Their fences are low. There are a few visitors in the morning. It's very easy to throw things into their enclosures. Once Rola is outside, she starts eating Italian ryegrass at her favorite sunny spot. There was progress in terms of the banana incidence. The detail is explained in the video due to a word limit. Rola has a runny nose and sneezes often. It seems she caught a cold. It was a fine day. Rola enjoyed sunbathing. I hope the zoo will provide her with enough burlap sacks. Thank you for watching Rola's episode.

About Monta:
Monta and Momoko were transferred to Japan when Monta was around 3 years old via Spain. When he was little, Monta easily got lonely. In his childhood, Monta was often being chased by an elderly gorilla, Momoko. They grew up together. He's been plucking his face hair constantly. He desperately needs a partner. But as for now this kind of abnormal behavior can be reduced if the zoo puts more emphasis on environmental enrichment. He needs stimulation. He's been living alone most of his adult life. From 2009 till 2010, the zoo tried pairing up Monta and Rola several times. It didn't go well. Since then, he has been all alone.

⚫︎In Sept 1977, Rola was born and was being hand reared in a vet house. No trial to return her to Rirako. But her case gave a lesson for zoos and keepers in Japan that a gorilla should be raised by its own kind.
⚫︎In Nov 1980, she was transferred to Tobu Zoo
Basically she was living alone but her keeper used to play with her.
⚫︎In Oct 1993, she was transferred to Ueno Zoo, and lived with her mother, Rirako, and other gorillas.
⚫︎In Dec 2008, she and Kenta were transferred to Chiba Zoo and lived with him until he passed away in 2016.
About Rola:
Rola has difficulty in communicating with other gorillas. Especially when she is put with a silverback, she becomes ill except with an individual like Kenta who had no interest in gorillas. She loves sunbathing. She occasionally exhibits abnormal behaviors such as coprophagy, licking urine, regurgitation and reingestion. I believe such behaviors can be reduced if the zoo puts more emphasis on environmental enrichment. Rola always searches for an earthworm as her companion. But it has a short life-span. I hope the zoo will consider the option of Rola living with other small animals. It may solve her abnormal behaviors and loneliness.

karinさん、お疲れさまです。拝見させて頂きました。 犯人特定に関しては進展がありましたが、それも常連さんあっての事ですし、故障した監視カメラは即修理すべきでしたし、ヤレヤレですね。 そのようなメンテナンス体制では、ゴリラ舎の室内の温度が十分に上がっているのかすら心配になります。 他園の飼育員さんも、皆さん多忙ですが、消防ホースを使ったエンリッチメント等は、関連する学部の学生や来園者が、ボランティアで制作したりしていますよね。 防寒用の藁や毛布も、ほしいものリストや寄付で手に入れて頂きたいです。 それから、公立の動物園は来園者を「出入り禁止」にする事が可能なのかと、ふと考えました。ちなみに私営の動物園から、出禁を命じられた人を間接的に知っています。 上野動物園も、やはり頼りにならないですね。上野のゴリラ飼育自体も、ゲンキが指を欠損した当時から、継続的にさまざまな問題を抱えていると思います。 日本のゴリラファンは、なにかとアタマが痛いですが、決して諦めたくないですね！🦍🌞

ムーチョさん、いろんな意味で重い動画をご視聴ありがとうございます。 そしていつも親身になってコメントをくださり感謝です🙏 監視カメラが故障してるんかい！ってずっこけましたわ。🫠 そうなんですよ。そういういいかげんさが、ますます不安にさせます。 室内でもローラが寒そうにしているので心配です。温度調節しっかりお願いしたいですね。 来園者がエンリッチメント制作をボランティアでやられているなんてすばらしい。園側に提案してみますね。しかし、今までいろいろ提案してきましたが何一つ変化がありません😣 寄付やアマゾンウイッシュなどでエンリッチメント用のフィーダーなどの購入を提案していますが、変化反応、ともにございません。 出入り禁止は難しそうですよね。その都度注意する他ないんではないかな、と。なので、物理的に投げ入れられない構造にしてもらいたいと思っています。他の来園者さんも気が気じゃないですよね。 上野動物園もすこしはかわってきている兆候はありますし、エンリッチメントなども充実していて環境は良いのですが、やはりゲンキたちが飼育されていたときと展示動物にたいする価値観がさほど変わっていない可能性がありますよね。ほんとに日本でゴリラが好きになると、そこには途方もない深くて暗い沼があることに気づきます😞 そこにゴリラがいる限り、諦めたくないですよね⭐️

Seriously, if a zoo cannot afford to keep security cameras in functioning properly, and the gorillas care supervised sufficiently, then they should not have Rola and Monta! Rola and Monta are far too precious to be treated without the utmost of care. It is bad enough that they live alone, without even a small companion of another species!

She has a friend, a earthworm she puts on her head, they could put a small animal with her like they do in Europe. It's sad for her & Monta being alone..

Eu acho muito triste a situação da Rola é do Monta, eles vão ficar naquele lugar até morrer, sem nenhuma tentativa de buscar alguma solução? Não é interessante, o que não faz o homem lucrar é descartável, nós somos descartáveis, espero que organizações , ONGS, instituições vejam essa situação e ajudem, porque é muito triste, é cruel!!!!

Good morning Rola, sometimes I just don't have the word's to convey my feelings of anger & frustration, it's best to not say anything for now.😢 I've seen a few videos of a gorilla called show ( shou ) who also lives on his own. Is this gorilla in Japan? He hasn't been cared for properly. I'm sure he would be either blind or dead.. Bless you Rola, thank you Karin. Take care.🦍🌟

Thank you Sonja for watching Rola's video even though it made you upset. Shou is in Hamamatsu city zoo. He became solitary after his partner Daiko passed away. He is not blind and seems doing well...But I have never seen him in person, and there aren't enough videos so I can't say much about him for sure.🙏

Thank you for your video, Karin! I read hat gorillas are thought to regurgitate for the satisfaction of eating and prolonging that satisfaction. Not sure if it is true, but gorillas do love to eat and presumably a solitary gorilla would be eating fairly non stop left to her own devices. It is too bad they can't have Monta and Rola only separated by bars at night so at least they could smell each other. I suppose Rola went down hill quite badly when in with Monta. Too bad they did not keep trying. I saw one video you did where they napped at the same time. Do they ever look at each other? I know they have a small area to see each other. Do you think they get any comfort from knowing they are near? I wish they would put nice things in there a blanket, a bucket, something new in their environment on a regular basis. It really is a shame. One separate thing, And I could be wrong, because I can only see via video, but the chimp enclosure looks like chimps younger chimps could escape from there! I hope this zoo does the right thing by the primates. Also, the man feeding them, may be a lonely person thinking they are being kind. I hope he stops! The zoo should sell food for the gorillas to have given to them. I know it doesn't look good, but it would provide some mental enrichment at least. But maybe that is a bad idea. Thank you, again. 💗

Thank you L M for your thoughtful comment. You are right about regurgitation. It is such a complicated behavior. There must be several intertwined reasons behind Rola's R/R. I believe Monta and Rola can smell and hear each other, and I do want to believe they are comforted by each other's presence even though they can't see each other. I agree with you. It's too bad that the zoo did not keep trying. In 2021, the zoo used to keep the gate between their enclosures open so that they could see each other through a barred gate. However, the zoo no longer opens the gate.😔 Regarding the feeding problem by some visitors, the zoo should install a safety net around their enclosure. Chiba Zoo is one of many zoos in Japan which do not understand the true meaning of animal welfare. I hope the zoo will hire professional staff who have academic backgrounds in zoology and primatology. All issues will be solved, then. Thank you L M for watching Rola's video.
