The mark-up for options is like that for cars too. $200 for "special" custom floor mats that can be purchased aftermarket for $50. I can see spending for things that will create systems like electrical, plumbing conduits, and things that require extra drilling or cutting to have them installed later. Then it makes some sense to me. I wonder how a builder would react to the customer asking to have all the groundwork installed, but buying the actual equipment later?

Spot On! You have to understand what comes with the basic boat. I was going to order a new mono hull, the base price was 760K. The boat did not come with sails add 80K, no electric winches add 40K, no electric fuerlers up front, no fureling main add 70K this went on and on. When done I was looking at 1.5 Mill. I decided against that maker. Seemed a bit like fraud to me. It is still difficult to accept that there are sailboat makers that do not include sails in their price. On the other hand there are makers like Antares Cats that includes everything sail-away to the South Pacific in their price. You got a heck of a deal with Leopard. It was nice of them to offer that big rebate, then again at 27K for a AIS system installed....... Be happy, be safe

Redundancy is key in boating and RVing. So don’t be too eager to conclude that Gensets are going to be obsolete. Your main engines die, you have no way to generate electricity in a Diesel/Electric Hybrid. Solar is a problem it’s not efficient. The in water trolling generator that racing boats use. That’s a great option. It creates drag when user using it, but otherwise shouldn’t be an issue. There’s also the fuel cell system from Efoy. I’d personally go with that option.
@barefootdoctorssailing85672 жыл бұрын
You are so right Weston. The advantage of cats is that you do have 2 engines already so that is your redundancy for power if on3e breaks down. We are waiting to see if Solar is completely left out (due to it's inefficiency as you say) r will they get to be better... I think the future will be to have the prop become your hydrogenerator (but that too needs increased efficiency) and we will check the Efoy fuel cell - capacities will get dramatically better in the future too - so yes, things are changing so fast in this space!

Good luck with the new boat - sure you will have lots of fun on it!
@barefootdoctorssailing85672 жыл бұрын
Hi Joseph, glad the video was thought provoking. The std props that we got with the Leopard 50 were aluminium and only $200 to replace so we are doing the s as me with the 45. I did not see significant difference in speed when I changed from folding props to fixed props on my performance car except at speeds over 10 -12 knots and leopards are so big and heavy that I don’t believe the difference (perhaps0.5knot at most) is worth the cost ($6000) and complications you get with them... carrying less gear in board will increase your speed as much or more than folding props I would guess! If you are racing then definitely get the folding props.

Thanks for following along and supporting us Bill! They do not do the platforms for the 45s - so it is not an option - certainly for our next boat though!!! We may put on a Wifi booster though (low cost relatively).
@WillN2Go12 жыл бұрын
Good package, smart boat. Should be terrific to sail. Digital screens in daylight can be a real problem. I was on a chartered Fontaine Pajot with a steering problem. The hydraulic steering had leaky seals so slowly turning the wheel didn't do anything, also wheel position was meaningless. There is a digital display of rudder position - but it's outboard and down around your knee(???? Who thought this was a good idea???) In daylight absolutely useless unless another person crouches down and cups their hands over it. I'd keep black foam core or maybe paint the insides of the instrument covers black, to hold up when the bright reflection wipes out the display. Black fabric will also work. Carry On Sailing (YT channel) complained that his B&G monitors keep failing. To get warranty service or replacement, you have to take them out, send them in, wait, ..... I'd look for people with similar gear and compile all the possible problems. I'll probably buy a back up monitor that I can install and use while the original is slowing going through the warranty process. (And maybe help another crew out along the way.) James on Carry On Sailing also recommends some laptop software that can display all the key information directly from the sensors if something goes wrong with the B&G or Raymarine systems/monitors. I don't mind spending extra for the builder to outfit a lot of the options. Just as you said, it saves time that could be used for sailing. But there are two other factors. First, if they install it at a 2-3x markup - not a problem if they're going to back it up. From what I've seen on KZbin and heard from sailors - they'll talk you through it on the phone - but mostly they'll just hand you off to the company. Second, if you install it yourself, you do learn a lot more about the ins and outs of your boat and equipment. A problem in a remote area won't be so bad if you've spent some time running wires and setting up gear. (But instead of the AIS transceiver, perhaps get your practice with a music system or video system.... something you can leave port without.) For my Seawind 1600 I ordered the FlexiTeek for the cockpit, but not for the foredeck. Each of these areas I calculated at +350 pounds (150kg) a lot of weight. Nick O'Kelly also pointed out that it absorbs more heat than the fiberglass and can heat up the cabins. I wanted to save weight. It is pretty and feels great on feet. Nick offers a consulting service where he went down the list of all the options, and things not on the list that I'd probably want. Terrific education. Well worth it for me. Fair winds guys.
@barefootdoctorssailing85672 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your detailed comments - they are all very on the mark. You must enjoy your Seawind 1600 - it is a boat that we were so close to going for with the lifting daggerboards and riddlers and outstanding sailing performance (but none available for 4 years...). Have you had good sailing on it and does it make the speeds shows on the polars? 18-22knots boat speed in 25 knots of breeze is what Ive seen in the polars and only a few knots below wind speed in low winds at the right angles... Looks spectacular! Lucky you.
@WillN2Go12 жыл бұрын
@@barefootdoctorssailing8567 Thanks, haven't got it yet. Just under two more years. Almost as soon as I signed the contract at the Annapolis Boat Show (where some how I missed seeing you guys ) more and more orders came in extending the waiting period. Outremer was already 4+ years out. HH is only 18 months - if you have 3.7 million - but.... it's probably worth it! I think the 1600 polars will be changed. First those superfast polars were 'Light Ship" and they were for the first slightly narrower version of the boat. (the hulls of the Passagemaker version are now each about 100mm wider, but a little bit longer). What I think I understand from the Heavyship polars (which version???) is that the top end takes a hit. I probably won't be doing 20 knots in 25 knot winds, but I should be able to do 15-16. But down at the low end it seems that the light wind performance stays about the same.
@barefootdoctorssailing85672 жыл бұрын
@@WillN2Go1 That is certainly more realistic for a cruising boat and it is still really nice to be doing 15-16 knots easily - the miles just get eaten up!!! At the end of the day it is being able to do good speeds in light airs that is the most important so you don't have to run the motor and get to your destination in good time.... Shame we missed you at Annapolis last year! Yes we were on Wanderlust in the last few days of the show.
@WillN2Go12 жыл бұрын
@@barefootdoctorssailing8567 I'm not sure how often performance cats actually get those kind of speeds over hours or long distances. What I've been able to figure out is that performance cats are to cruising cats what cruising cats are to monohulls - no one is above 10 knots very often. The expensive carbon performance magic is maybe 2 knots. But your second part, light airs is probably more what's gained by performance cats - the ability to use the engines much less.

@barefootdoctorssailing85672 жыл бұрын
Hi Andy. I was referring to DC chargers that have 5 or 10KW output - they put the charge directly into the batteries at 12, 24 or 48V and if you have a large Lithium bank, the 10KW will be taken up in one hour. 10Kw of power will last a long time and now run the efficient Acs overnight, we understand. With only minimal engine use (eg in and out of anchorages) you can take your batteries to full without any extra running time!

Maybe a stupid question, but you said in this video that the season is only six months in the Med. Can you not sail year round in the Med?
@barefootdoctorssailing85672 жыл бұрын
Hi Keith, The med in the winter is cold and stormy and while yo can sail some days, most cruisers take their boats out of action (marinas or on the hard) from late Oct / Nov to April.... We are from tropical Queensland so do not tolerate the cold well either and have no plans of trying to be tough - we want life to be pleasant....
@keithb23382 жыл бұрын
@@barefootdoctorssailing8567 Thanks for the info, I totally understand you not wanting to be around the cold. Where I live in Saskatchewan, Canada, it routinely gets down to -45 C or lower with the wind chill. 🥶

How does the upper lounge on the 45 L compared to the 50 L? What size engine are you getting on the Leopard 45?
@barefootdoctorssailing85672 жыл бұрын
Hey guys - the upper deck is slightly smaller on the 45 but still more than enough space for 6-8 people and usually is only the 2 (or4) of us. The engines are 56HP Yanmars.

what about the recent bulkhead failing issues ? do I have the correct mfg ?
@barefootdoctorssailing85672 жыл бұрын
Hey Ted, not that was only on the Lagoon 450. The bulkheads in the Leopards are really strong and have taken a pounding without breaking in various situations we have known about.

Wow the add on s are over the top I battle to under stand how expensive they are when the SA rand is 15 to the USD so that basic boat is R9.2 million rands mind blowing and the generator is half a million rand.😳😳🙈
@barefootdoctorssailing85672 жыл бұрын
Hi Ian, Yes then mark ups for convenience are the the area the manufacturers make a lot of their money, it seems... Robertson and Caine are charging Western world prices and not SA prices for sure!

We first see it at the Grand Motte boat show as a display boat for Leopard last week of April. Then hand over after boat show first few days of May after they move it and clean. We will record the events for you guys Vincent.

Hi people did you see the new high power alternators one of the cat channels put on their boat with lithium batteries they got rid of their generator
@barefootdoctorssailing85672 жыл бұрын
Yes this is the sort of thing we are talking about but we have come across DC generators that operate like alternators on the engine that generate 5-10KW per hour - staggering. Most of the others are "high power" but these just blow the usual one out the water! Once you have enough generation with the generator, it goes over the side!

Why did you downgrade to a 45? Was it delivery and or cost? Reconsider the folding props, they make a world of difference
@barefootdoctorssailing85672 жыл бұрын
Hit John, we 'downgraded' because there were no new Leopard 50s available for few miles and the second hand ones were more expensive than the new ones! We have had folding props in the past and I was not convinced of the difference unless you are looking to sail fast (over 10 knots) - comparing when the were on and off. We also had several break, fall off and have locked in Allen nuts etc - not good experiences but with a performance cat, I would do it.
@johnsummers94342 жыл бұрын
@@barefootdoctorssailing8567 Sounds like you've had bad experience with folding props. I've both 2 blade and 3 blade the latter were Bruntons Propellers on a cruising catamaran. I reckoned an increase of 1 to 1.5 knots, not much but soon adds up on long cruise. Plus it gave me better fuel consumption and more trust in astern. Anyway happy tress free cruising.

The tiny navigation screens are pathetic. Cheaper to buy a large computer monitor. Greatcircle has a good main screen (32" wide-screen?). Tablets would be better than the Raymarine and BnG screens, portable and easy to replace.
@barefootdoctorssailing85672 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! The cost they charge for those is ott!

Considering Sailing Uma have successfully proved fully electric boats work all the way up to the far north of the Arctic Circle and that their regen from their sail drive is sufficient to top up their batteries while sailing in the far north, I think the days of fossil fuels in sailing are ending. As you point out all electric off the grid sailing is becoming more and more the way to go. I think within 5 years buying a major manufactures diesel engine sailboat will disappear from the market.

You guys gotta get a mic if you want to do these videos. There are so many good mic options for very little money these days from mini shotguns to lavs that record right to the pack you wear (no wireless issues). Your sound is horrible. Hard to hear understand. Sounds like you’re on another planet. Amateur doesn’t even start to describe. Not watching anymore. One less premium member.
@barefootdoctorssailing85672 жыл бұрын
Hi Johnathan sorry to hear your comment. We did use a good quality rode mic, the problem is often having to record inside in this instance as was rainy and windy out, and we were in a concrete Moroccan house, kind of just a concrete box with a lot of acoustic feed back. We can only work with the resources we have at the time. Better to have a video release than none. The other thing is that our this video was a real time release, which means being current, on the spot and not watching episodes that are far behind real time and out of date. Thanks for your feed and your support to date, will take it on and continue to try and improve in the future, all the best.

It is all about the compromise in relation to all the features and of course with the comfort you lose performance.... Having said that, in the first 6 months cruising the Med, we only filled the tanks once and have half tanks at the end so at least the Leopards are able to sail in light winds (4 knots in 6knots wind / 7knots in 10 knots) and go upwind which is more than can be said of the other big brands.... There is always a compromise but we realised we want more so are heading to get a custom built boat of the future - Portofino 52
