@@elaineb7065 The problems that the war on drugs caused are very present in Breaking Bad. The militarization of the police, violence in Latin America, a stigma against getting help when it's needed, preventable loss of life, and the show demonstrates that every effort to stop the production of drugs just leads to manufacturers finding loopholes. I agree that Breaking Bad is also an indictment of the American healthcare system, but it also throws jabs at the war on drugs.

I remember when Harper was PM, and for those 10 years he was PM, there was at least an ad a week going on about how awful the Liberals were and what they intended to do with YOUR hard earned money if they ever get back in power, or slamming the NDP, then painting the Conservative government as "working for YOU".

This episode is 9 years old and the Danish zoos bit still has me in HORROR--what the actual heck?!
@Gareethtw
@Gareethtw 24 күн бұрын
I did cover what the heck. earlier but I think you get a notification. Nearly all zoos in Europe and all those ethical enough so I would go to them ( have a successful captive breeding programs for at least 1 animal that may become extinct in the wild ) participate in a program that makes decisions about how best to ensure a broad gene pool for animals in captivity. There is a limit to how many offspring of a specific male or female animal can go on to have offspring of their own, That is in line with good not just zoo management but it is why we could calculate how large a gene pool of humans it takes to populate an area without introducing too many genetic issues and concentrating them The zoos report on their animals and decisions about which zoos get what animals are made, You cannot really neuter a giraffe and they don't have short lifespans that particular giraffe had the same sire as too many other giraffes in that animals pool so when that happens and no attrition due to disease happens to giraffes with that sire then there is no choice but to put the animal down . Those are the rules and consistent with good husbandry. Having to euthanize a giraffe who in the wild would be eaten anyway it does make very little sense to not use it as meat. Zoo animals benefit from variety and lions are expensive in terms of their need for meat but due to habit loss and now with areas sometimes rendered unable to support human or animal life so swiftly captive breeding is more important than ever but it does have to be done in a way that ensures a broad enough gene pool to maximize the health of the animals exists, To practice one set of rules for animals that may be released to the wild and another for those that is unlikely for would be to have less healthy animals , Breeding goes on naturally so unexpected baby booms happen. Animals differ in how long it takes to be sure that most things that could go wrong in terms of gene expression have and a good amount of data is needed for each animal . The baffling part really is the amount of coverage what is a routine practice in all participating zoos in Europe got for a zoo in Denmark when you can look up how many animals in European zoos get euthanized for the same reason as the giraffe . That people get crazy ideas and think hey they now a roadside zoo in the US that would take it doesn't change the rules they agreed to be bound by and that a painless death is better than say if they had decided to give the lions a more authentic how to have giraffe meat, That giraffe was doomed when a threshold of animals with the same sire had lived long enough to be past the more risky part of the lifecycle . He was the giraffe selected for euthanasia . He would not have been allowed to breed and there is no way to prevent that as neutering a giraffe . As for the dissection it could be that having spent most of my life in Canada has not resulted in someone who sees the issue with that. You don't dissect an animal during the summer school break of course I would have liked the chance myself as a child but zoos in Canada aren't as willing to be educational , While potentially parents and grandparents could have shown more judgement on if the kids was ready but even the kids who seemed a little upset still benefit. Denmark's been around a long time and as mostly island nation with narrow strip of mainland it doesn't have much wild animals, I don't think it was quite fair to mock the notion that it could be an educational thing to see the inside of a lion. Discomfort is okay as some of them will still go into fields where they might in fact see the insides of animals or people as part of their work. Then again most things there are milked for their educational benefits I think that's very practical but I am a bit convinced that if you are born in a pragmatic nation however young you are on leaving pragmatism remains a core trait

The Denmark thing reminds me of the death of the famous JUMBO the elephant. He escaped his handlers in St Thomas Ontario. He was killed by a train going the other way. For three days after, with the help of the local police, for 25 cents you could get your picture taken with the dead elephant. Then the butchers arrived cut up the corpse and the skeleton was sent to the Smithsonian. Denmark should move forward a hundred years. We shouldn't do this anymore

What did not come up is the giraffe had to be destroyed ( and then why not use it as food ) as zoo is part of a group of most zoos in Europe ) while the giraffe was healthy he could not go to another zoo in Europe either as the giraffe shared the same sire as too many giraffes There are a lot of reasons why you cannot neuter a giraffe but there is a limit on how many zoo animals can share the same male of female parent, The birth of more giraffes meant they had too many giraffes and the giraffe put down was not placeable at another zoo. Denmark is not a backwards nation This was a contractual obligation and in lines with good management as we do live on a planet where we repeatedly put animals in the wild in danger but the consequences of too many of any animal sharing the same gene pool can be quite bad The dissection made good sense I mean why should kids have to wait until they are old enough to dissect a fetal pig. That's grade 12 in BC, Canada to see the anatomy of an animal inside. Some will grow up to be vets or doctors and while where things are and so on is not the same and other differences exist I would have loved to see something like that when I was young. Plus while potentially some of the kids were too young and maybe their parents and grandparents could have done more to ensure they were ready - it is not like here there as there is not much wildlife so it is not like they routinely see roadkill or whatever. Some will be farmers or butchers . Denmark is a pragmatic nation and the education of children is considered so important that one of the duties of it's very nerd friendly university is to build better brains in children. This came up when someone commented they did not seem to play classical and a conductor opened with this , ( They do in fact play classical but they don't tend to film it as much so it is under-represented on their channel ) It's not like the elephant situation . I know they research the show so they likely knew why both animals had to be destroy. It is an honest nation and if you do not do what becomes an obligation as you have to report the captive breeding numbers back so an overall census of animals and their parentage exists for the close to all reputable zoos who participate and it is not the zoo itself but the board of the group that makes decisions about the animals of all participating zoos who said to destroy those animals and potentially more since. Also will have said that to other zoos but in order to get animals that might need preserving which is they only real way a zoo can justify existing they do have to be a member of the group that monitors animals and makes decisions about where animals go They do get a lot of data about which helps with deciding for more endangered animals where captive breeding has good success, They sure didn't cover it when my province sold off a property that had a very small mostly nocturnal animal section which had the most successful captive breeding for two animals both critically endangered and that seems more problematic than euthanizing a giraffe who cannot be placed in a zoo in Europe and is the giraffe the organizing body says should be euthanized It only reminds you of 100 years ago because to say what I did about the facts left out would take the whole show and people want to have warm fuzzy notions about less ethical zoos

As someone who was raised by a man with absolutely no emotional intelligence at all, I can tell you it is incredibly important. Emotional intelligence includes sympathy, empathy and emotional understanding. We need that in a leader just as much as we need intellect. Knowledge can be taught and you can surround yourself with the right advisors for that. Emotional intelligence and the ability to emotionally relate to people? You can't teach that.

@@mjbranch2109 I don't. I have been in two provinces and had connections in 4. And I am well informed on the situation in Canada and what some people believe the situation is vs what it is... Some Canadians believe that they are in a recession when they are not by definition. The "slow yet total economic and demographics destruction..." That's just scaremongering nonsense. It's an extreme and gravelly exaggerated claim that lacks merits. It's even literarly self-contradictory by definition. Economy is the distribution, exchange and consumption of good embedded in social, political and economic relationships reciprocity, exchange and consumerism. Even if society was to completely collapse, you would still have some form of distribution, exchange, and consumption of goods and services. A carrot is a good, a slice of bread is a good, a rat burger is a good... It's literally impossible to destroy the economy because you need to get some good to survive. Even hunter-gatherer have an economy by definition. But even metaphorically this is exaggerating. Besides the fact is that the economy remained stable under Trudeau. GDP growth, unemployment rate, and many other leading indicators have been consistently positive - except for a couple of years, but it's not like a once a century pandemic should be blamed on Trudeau. Our demographic is expanding at a stable rate thanks to immigration, but blocking immigration would risk a reverse pyramid at some point because people are not having as many babies thanks to a good situation in terms of human rights and socio-economics.

Just watched this in May 2024. As a Canadian, I love John's characterization of Canadians and our elections and our politicians. Harper was evil. We were so lucky to see the end of him. I voted for Trudeau but had the same concern that he was a pretty boy and might not be effective. He turned out to be great. He has been in power ever since. He started by building a cabinet filled with women, men and featured diversity. Instead of arriving at work in a limo, he hired a bus and took the entire team to the gates of parliament and walked hand in hand as a team across the property to go to work. To me one of the best moments was when Trump came to the G8 meeting hosted in Canada and then attempted to turn the world against Trudeau. Trudeau looked great on the world stage and Trump looked like the evil empire. To this day I believe Trump was pissed because girlfriend Ivanka clearly greased her panties in the presence of Justine. How sweet!
