Yes, the cabbage merchant did actually have a cabbage slug! You have to look carefully, but after the cabbages were destroyed, a cabbage slug is flung past the cabbage merchant as he screams. Speaking of plants, Alchemilla is the genus of the lady's mantle! There are about 700 species, the majority native to cool temperate and subarctic regions of Europe and Asia. Alchemilla mollis is the most famous. The plant is often grown as groundcover, and is valued for the appearance of its leaves in wet weather. Water beads on the leaves due to their dewetting properties. These beads of water were considered by alchemists to be the purest form of water. They used this water in their quest to turn base metal into gold, hence the name Alchemilla. She's traveling while pregnant because they are the couple from the Zuko Alone episode, the couple that Zuko resisted robbing. The Rough Rhinos (the ones who attacked Chin in Avatar Day and attacked Zuko and Iroh in The Desert) burned down their village. They were trying to get to Ba Sing Se so they'd be able to raise their baby in a safe place, although of course the Fire Nation would end up occupying Ba Sing Se. The creators chose the name Full Moon Bay because originally it was gonna be Half Moon Bay but realized there is already a bay with that name outside San Francisco.

Goosegrass, also known as cleavers and stickygrass, is a low growing weedy herb with whorled leaves, tiny white flowers and green fruits, and little bristles covering the stem that act like velcro. The young shoots, before the bristles get stout, are edible cooked, and the little ripe berries are edible raw (one of my favorite nibbles to grab while fishing) but are even better acquired in quantity and slow roasted in a pan. Tastes like something between cashews and dark chocolate.

Shame you cut off the "as a tourist" part from Iroh's line at the beginning, because it's one of the funniest things he's said! The Serpent's Pass is visually similar to, though much longer than, a real-life isthmus, La Coupée, which connects Sark with Little Sark in the Channel Islands off the coast of France. Like the Serpent's Pass, La Coupée is a high and narrow pass with sea cliffs on both sides. Historically it was very dangerous to cross and people were known to fall off the edge, but now it has a road and railings that make it relatively safer. The "Abandon hope" carved on the gate is a reference to the words that appear above the gates of hell in Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy which read, "Abandon all hope, ye who enter here". I don't blame the ticket lady for being that restrictive about creatures that could potentially harm whole ecosystems. Not cabbage slugs, but cabbageworms are real and they've become invasive in the US, feeding on cruciferous plants, chewing holes in leaves, boring into cabbages and ruining entire heads. I mean, look at Florida, many creatures like green iguanas arrived in Florida as stowaways, and they among others have interrupted the balance of that ecosystem! In Australia, native beetles posed a threat to sugarcane crops, and so to control the population, they introduced cane toads from the Americas, but the toads went after all sorts of native wildlife and dominated as they are also poisonous.

I'm pretty sure the reason they didn't start with the ice bridge is because they are worried about being seen by Fire Navy ships, which they have already run into, but then the giant serpent shows up, and it's just do what you have to to survive. I've always shipped Aang and Katara. I just really like the way their relationship is given time to grow organically.

Fun episode. We see a bunch of characters we haven’t seen in a long time, such as suki and jet, and they actually feel important again. Aangs struggle to get over Appa is also very true to life and is hard for anyone to get over the loss of a companion. Ultimately one of the lower stakes episodes, but one that feels absolutely needed.

Not feeling things can be a coping mechanism. Just shut them all down to stabilize. It can definitely be scary not to feel though. Apathy and lack of empathy can be dangerous. People can do very destructive and horrible things apathy and without empathy. I would love to see Toph on a date. What kind of gal or guy would she go out with? I want her to like someone that loves animals. Animals like dirt. Toph likes dirt. Could all like dirt :P Would have loved a Tuski ship. Both so strong with good character.

I don't do ships myself, good with however the show goes for pairings. I do ultimately think Zuko and Mai are a great pair and then I'm a hardcore Korrasami fan. I know the creators wished they could have been more obvious about their lady-love relationship, but still had to worry about Nickelodeon conservativism at the time. I'm willing to accept that since there's plenty of Korrasami art and even official merch out there (got a pin of Korra making a fire heart for Asami, pretty sure that was official Nickelodeon merch) Re: the pregnant lady tho, they were travelling because they were refugees. They didn't have much choice on when they travelled because they were forced out of their home. I love that we actually see them... I think 3 times in the show? They're the couple Zuko nearly steals from in Zuko Alone, we have them now in The Serpent's Pass, then Iroh sits next to them on the train into Ba-Sing Se. I don't think they show up beyond that, but they could be in the background of another scene in Ba-Sing Se, I suppose.

I love the ship name Tuki! The only canon ships I love and want to sail with are only found in the novels. There's a married Water Tribe couple I love, a canon pairing, and an implied pairing that needs to happen. Noncanon, I like Mai/Ty Lee. Their discussion about soggy Appa fur in the Chase during a rewatch just hit me in the feels and I've loved the thought of them together since then. I love hearing about people gushing on who they ship in AtLA, but otherwise, I don't really see any of the main characters with any of the other main characters besides those two. I'd like to explore Katara with Haru, but I imagine him worshiping the ground she walks on would get boring after a while. Seeing Toph on a date would be hilarious. I fully agree, but I can't think of who. I guess Lin's dad is convenient, but I don't remember his name. As of right now, Aang is stuck as a 12 yo raised by monks and trauma in my mind and I can't imagine him in a serious relationship, no matter what canon says. He needs to have fun when he can and not worry about settling down!

Favorite ship in Last Airbender was Sokka and Suki. Thought that was built really well throughout all 3 seasons and love when she officially joined Team Avatar! Legend of Korra I didn’t really enjoy any of the official ships. Ended up being a fan of Bosami (Bolin/Asami), cause they always had the cutest moments to me. Though I think that series suffered a lot from lack of initial planning (since it was originally announced to be a one season show with a limited episode count) and lack of support overall from Nickelodeon, I think many of the characters individually were very well done, but the relationships and plots not so much.

My engagement with shipping is weird. It's generally easier to list the ones I don't like than the ones I do, but Avatar has a slap enough major cast that it's pretty easy. I'm fine with any of Katara, Ty Lee, or Toph with Aang, and any of Suki, Ty Lee, or Toph with Sokka, or Yue in stories where she survives. Zuko and Mai are made for each other, 8 will not read Zutara.
