Great tip with the seal removal. Tip my old man hammered into me, always put the lid straight back on the grease. Stops grit getting in to it and ruining the whole tub.

You need to turn the pinion flange to make sure it has not locked up they often do.The shims on the pinion bearings from the factory are thinner than cigarette paper when you get wear on the pinion bearings the spacer can turn and the thin shims all disintegrate causing the pinion to become really loose it then locks up the diff when you tighten the nut.When that happened I would pull the diff out take all the thin shims out and use thick ones only I would then rub the spacer on a sheet of rough emery paper resting on a sheet of glass to get the correct preload on the pinion bearings once that was done I would install the pinion seal then preload the carrier bearings and adjust the backlash.When your vehicle was new I have had to set up the diffs up at 30,000 km it is very common on earlier Landcruisers I did so many I could set them up by hand without using a spring scale or dial indicator.Set up time with the diff in a vice was 20 minutes it took longer to get the gasket off the diff housing.Once the shims have been spun there is no way out of pulling the diff out it has to be set up again otherwise you will be up for a new ring gear and pinion the backlash will smash the teeth.

Thank you John for your detailed message you have taught me a good lesson, still so much to learn on early cruisers. I appreciate others sharing there knowledge and skills.

Great Video and nice trick with the Screws, gotta remember that one. But I will propably rebuild my Diffs completely.
@40ChannelCruiser3 жыл бұрын
That sucks that you will have to do a full rebuild on the diff, but will be worth it in the end.
@thelandcruiserproject54213 жыл бұрын
@@40ChannelCruiser I am not sure if they actually need a full Rebuild. I just want to replace all the parts that get worn over time. The 42 is over 30 years old, so I think its not a bad Idea to atleast replace the bearings, seals, check for wear and swap the rear diff with the front diff.

What for was that measuring? 🤨 You tightened the nut after anyway. You’d need to test how it turns after the tightening and maybe add some shim there. Otherwise you may burn the pinion bearing.
