Join our Patreon : patreon.com/BarefootDoctorsSailing - from $3/episode
Join Barefoot Doctors Sailing as progress towards St Helena on our 8000mile Atlantic crossing on a new Leopard 50 to USA but find ourselves 300miles off course and have to make strategic decisions about which way to go.
We also share really interesting ways to improve the performance of your Genoa for both upwind and downwind sailing. These will help both performance sailors and long distance sailing as the tricks that Paul Badenhorst shares to easily cover the miles with better shaped sails are shared with you!
We also have to fix squeaking blocks and follow the everyday activities on the boat....
If you want to know what it is like to sail 8000 miles across open ocean, jump on board with us!
Our exciting Patreon option from only $3 per week, will allow our supporters to enjoy live updates on positions and daily logs on the Atlantic crossing as well as join us for sailing events in Gocek, Turkey (Sept 2023), Aegean Greece, May 2024. Then in Dubai Jan 2025 (aboard the new Portofino 52) join us for the launching party and test sails!!! We are also offering boat build tours with sailing off Dubai to share the progress of the P52 build and provide whatever sailing or life discussions that YOU want us to provide during all of these events..... It is a very exciting prospect and we have been requested repeatedly to give advice, take folk sailing, teach sailing techniques etc etc.... So here it is!!!
Any Patreons will have the choice to join us for these events which are usually about 5 days to be up close and personal with Eli and John and learn from their expertise... There will be sailing trips, excursions and chats during the events and the subjects will be designed to suit the participants that will be there. Patreons will receive all the sailing and talks with the Barefoot Doctors without any cost but will only have to cover their own travel, food and accomodation costs.
All Patreon proceeds go to Exqisit Life Foundation to support TUFMINDS Mental Resilience and Suicide Prevention Program worldwide.
Some come Barefoot with us on this exciting journey - now physically and in person with Patreon if you wish!!!
Binge watch and come barefoot with us as we travel and explore the planet, mostly from the water but sometimes through the minds of others as we provide aid and support where needed through the amazing TUFMINDS solutions!
WHAT IS TUFMINDS
The free TUFMINDS program is released as a smartphone program under the Exqisit Life Foundation Charity, a registered not for profit and requires financial support to fund the free program. TUFMINDS saves lives by intervening at the point of suicide and pulling everyone to higher levels of mental resilience, wellbeing and functioning. it also creates better attitudes, resilience and coping - all very important for sailors facing difficult situations at sea.

Hi Kirk - if you et out on the water, just play with it and watch your average speeds to see what works and some of the theory does not work in really life. For example cats are very forgiving, esp when you are below 60* or more. While you can spend ag3es trimming to your tell tales, cats are really forging and it makes little difference, shown by the fact that Paul sets the main in the 2nd reef and doesn't touch it sailing from 60*-150*! Always check what works as some sailing teaching is based on monohull sailing and does not work on catS!

@barefootdoctorssailing8567 I really appreciate that. I figured I would need the introductory sailing first, then go for the Cat course for the second level. If you have any recommendations where I could get certified on a cat that would be fantastic.

Another great episode Jon. I think your discussion from 08:00 onwards is good for beginners. This is the big issue I have with self-tacking jibs/genoa's. Typically the tracks are short and have the sail too close hauled to the mail to allow good airflow. This track set up is well shown on your Plan diagram at 13:05. As you showed so well, having the sail further to leeward allows for a much larger flow space and flatter sail shape. People should think of sails as a wing, just like a plane wing. BIG ROUND shape produce more lift but are much slower (think of a 747 & A380), whereas a fighter jet has a much shallower wing shape, very little curve, but this allows it to move through the air much faster (greater than the speed of sound) and is obviously what you are trying to promote here. Nice round sail shapes are great for rough waters with lots of swell and chop as they produce good torque like power (like a V8), and whilst they may not be as fast as a flatter shape is, they combat waves and power pushing through swell much better than a flatter sail shape that doesn't have the power to push through larger seas. My apologies, that was all a bit verbose. Great sailing, and great tips within the cabin. Stay safe.

Hey John. I remember touring your new 45 in LGM and then stepped into the 50 and thinking that, other than the lack of the dingy platform (Which some would say is a good thing, especially when loading in rough water), I actually preferred the 45. Lower, more accessible boom, bigger owner’s suite (full hull), nicer galley counters, and the aft cockpit felt the right size vs the vastness of the 50. Now that you have had both…what are your thoughts?
@barefootdoctorssailing8567
@barefootdoctorssailing8567 Жыл бұрын
The 45 is easier to handle but the 50 handles the big seas easier. So it really depends where you are going and what you are doing with it - if you are sailing around the world and at anchor most of the time, the 50 is better (assuming you can manage the size of sails. But if you are doing the Med, only sailing coastal hops, short handed and spending lots of time in and out of marinas, the 45 will be better....

Hi Mark, we just bought cheap $10 lights from the supr=ermarket or cheap hardware store but I would recommend getting ones that have rechargeable internal batteries as getting the AAA batteries in boats when you are off the grid is a pain...

Hi Capt John, the Portofino better not squeak like that!!!! Or we will have to get a refund. Great stuff, that ur all well and travelling safe. Bit worried ur not wearing a lifeline or lifejacket John, when on top deck. Been following Ash an Ben for yrs, till I found Barefoot Drs Sailing 😀 only joking. Oh Karlene you sound like my mother! We were lifejackets when there is risk and depending on what we are doing. Up there I was filming on a clam day and the boom was in tight so cold not hit me so I knew it was fine - although it did look like I could have been whacked on the film... Mark did not even know Ireland had a cricket team - he is more interested in the rugby and reconl=kons Ireland will win the Rugby World Cup!
