I built a similar unequal length exhaust for my suzuki sv650 so that the exhaust would exit under the seat. I did back to back runs on the same dyno With the unequal exhaust and my oem exhaust That was cut and fitted with An aftermarket muffler. The result was a nine horsepower loss using the unequal length exhaust . The exhaust looks neat, but definitely produced horrible results

You can purchase sheets of gasket material.. I use Felpro gasket material for situation as you have.. simply put a little grease on the parts surface lay on paper and imprint cut it out. You can use the bolts for punch against a board. If you look at a bolt the end is made just for this it will cut the gasket material...😎 8 N Ford tractor muffler would work... If you ever need a custom gasket, I've had great success using a flatbed scanner and a laser cutter. Either scan an original gasket or make a tracing of the mating surface and scan that. You can even just take some measurements and quickly draw something up in any vector drawing program. Buy a sheet of gasket material and you can cut out a very clean and accurate gasket in less than a minute. You don't even need a particularly good laser cutter - those cheap K40 things will work fine. A blue diode laser cutter should work too. You can get either for just a few hundred bucks. I made a whole bunch for a local car club and they worked great.

I enjoy these videos as you develop the ideas.. Gasket paper and a small round headed hammer and you could have made a gasket in half an hour, using the hammer against the metal of the side cover as a cutter. I often make carburettor float chamber gaskets this way as it's a same day fix rather than waiting for a new part. I dont notice much difference in power between 11:1 and 12.5:1 AFR on an aircooled VW bus.. just more soot , worse mileage and maybe the AFR sensor lasts only 20k miles..

If you already have a wideand sensor for tuning, you could as well just ditch the carb (and all your mixture/idle/etc. problems) and give that motor a low-end programmable fuel injection. Something like an old used 8-bit Megasquirt could be installed in just a few days. You'd never bother tinkering with a carburettor again. ;)

One way to solve the carburettor issues is to bin the original and fit a single barrel side draft like on a classic Mini or motorcycle. Another thing to do is old school turbo charging where the turbo is drawing air through the carby instead of blowing. This can have a lot of benefits as no blow off valves or intercooler are required on such a small engine and there should be no doubt about fuel balance to the cylinders.

Even with the obnoxiously loud exhaust, it'll never sound like a Harley. That is because the Predator engine is a 90 degree V-twin, and the Harley is a 45 degree engine, with a weird firing timing. It should sound more like a Moto Guzzi instead.

@timrussell1559
@timrussell1559 Жыл бұрын
You may want to consider getting rid of the carb and using a multiport injection system that is readily available for that predator instead. This would certainly improve the throttle response, driveability, and eliminate the need to fine tune the fuel system for optimim efficiency. Also, consider installing a plain old generic automotive glass pack style muffler. This should keep the noise down to a reasonable level while providing much less restrictive backpressure. Great build!

Indeed we do have gasket paper in stock for custom gaskets. The paper we have is a bit thicker than the OE gasket and that would have added a bit to the crankshaft end play.. probably not a big deal. Also we were concerned that since the side cover also contains the oil pump, it would be possible that a fabricated gasket may cause an internal and undetectable oil leak. It was a hard choice, but we figured waiting a few days for the proper gasket was the best thing to do.
@firstlast---

@@robotcantina8957I would have never thought that an oversized gasket would affect end play. Why did you decide against rtv?

@firstlast--- Жыл бұрын
@@robotcantina8957 Fair enough, although in automotive applications rtv is commonly used to seal the oil pan, and in some cases requires you to to lay a bead right around the oil pickup. The older 1.4 ecotec being an example. Although it's pricy hondabond seals very well and is often used in the motorbike world due to its cross compatibility. I have even heard of people using hondabond to seal transmission case halves with no issues. Silicone levels would be found in high concentrations for a few oil changes but I don't think the predator would mind 😉

You mentioned removing the governor does not increase power, so you'll keep the engine redline the same as the governor setting? Else, Torque X RPM/5252 = Power, assuming torque doesn't fall off aggressively with a bit more rpm, you'll be making more power with some more rpm which the CVT should capture nicely.
@robotcantina8957
@robotcantina8957 Жыл бұрын
These small engines are tuned to make peak HP @ 3600 RPM and the governor limits the RPM to 3600... So removing the governor allows the engine to spin faster but the HP is dropping off after 3600 RPM.. To make power above 3600 RPM typically that requires a modified camshaft.
@surf4luke
@surf4luke Жыл бұрын
@robotcantina8957 That's surprising, I wouldn't have thought 3600 is peak hp in an un-governed example, more that 3600 is best operating point for a balance of longevity, efficiency, power and tuned emissions. Assuming 3600 is infact peak HP for an un-governed factory tuned example, your quickly digressing from factory tune which I suspect will leave more potential HP in rpm as well. Nothing crazy, but even 300rpm makes a difference, especially when sustained with a CVT, unlike the brief moments the engine puts out that specific additional horsepower before shifting gears in a purely manual transmission. Regardless, it's all awesome good fun stuff. Really enjoy the show!

Could put a cherry bomb muffler at the end. I built an underbelly exhaust for a parallel twin motorcycle using one of those as the base and it had a nice throaty sound. Being oversized, I [think] it would have a minimal impact on the fuel mixture variation from the current straight pipes. Short of using EGTs to monitor the individual cylinders for carb sync, could you use dual vacuum gauges to sync the carbs like we did with the old motorcycles?

I have a Kawasaki Brute Force 750, the guy I bought it from changed the factory exhaust to a KMF straight pipe type muffler, and it bike is incredibly loud, so much so, I didn't think I'd be able to use to go hunting. So, I took a stroll to the junkyard, and found a factory Stainless muffler on a 1990 Mitsubishi pickup, with a little welding of a flange, and a hanger. The muffler inserts into the KMF muffler, and shaves a large amount of noise off the bike that makes it very suitable for being in the woods, and after taking some full throttle rips, doesn't hurt the top end too much(At least the highest I'm willing to feel the top end, doing 60mph on some 29.5" High Lifters is the limits of my bravery.). The muffler is also plug and play, I can pull if off and be loud for some mudrides, and throw the extra muffler on, and you hear the engine noise just as loud as the puffs from the back. I say all that, as a suggestion, to find a large style 4-cyl exhaust, to not hurt the power of the engine, and still get a factory/OEM sound. Bonus points for old school flapper cutout.

Listening to the engine as you accelerated got me to thinking. A cheap way to shave a bit more time off of the old 0 to 55 would be to get a tuning kit for the torque converter.

Cut the center out of the spacer under the carb and it will let both cylinders use both barrels

You really don't want that, each cylinder has its own flow characteristics. You think you're going to make your carburetor tuning simpler, but what you're doing is compromising the tuning on both cylinders.

We may try 3D printing something like that as a test.

I think a supertrapp muffler would be good- it's compact and gives you the ability to tune it with different plates. Used to be popular on old air cooled VWs. Your current rig sounds a lot like my friend's Super Beetle from highschool. And it's about as fast. Lol. Just needs some Black Sabbath playing through the Pioneer 6x9s and some burning parsley.

I'm very surprised you aren't the type of person to have big rolls of gasket paper around to make your own gaskets at any given moment, hahaha. Also coulda gone with RTV of course. Holy crap this thing is loud and sounds ridiculous now. Loving the videos as always.

Cereals packets make great gaskets. Years (and years) ago me and my mates would make our own gaskets from Cornflakes boxes, because they were free and often better than factory items. You can make hole punches from odd bits of tubing and taper the ends with a file or stone. You can also buy that fibre gasket by the sheet. It's pretty cheap and it will come in handy one day, trust me.

LOL - that second gear take-off had me laughing. Could do with a long chamber muffler to take out the raspy note, but retain the deep V-twin sound.

Your belt and clutch life will be extended significantly if you get in the habit of using 1st gear....even though you don't 'need' it.

Your muffler bushings were the perfect opportunity to cover why you didn't go with muffler bearings :P

Prolly because the bearing grease smokes when it gets hot. :)

I think that when you are done with this car, you could auction it off to your subscribers. That would be cool, and the little rat wagon could live on!

My first thought when you said you searched harley forums on the exhaust, was hell yeah! Was the engine bogging down a bit?

Yeah the engine seemed like it was running lean, but it was making Hella power even so. We will sort out the carburetor this week.
