We knew something was up when an extra week passed without an entry. And the result is an amazing fix. I have a brother with a big old industrial lathe in his garage (there went a whole wall of storage space), which is fun to watch, so it was great to see what you do with yours. That new clutch looks much more substantial and likely to work once you get everything lined up and dialed in. We await the zero to fifty data with great anticipation. With that broad range of ratios, maybe even zero to sixty! Quarter mile through the traps!

@billharris6886 Жыл бұрын
Wow Jimbo, you have REALLY been busy! Thanks for all the effort in putting the video together, I don't expect that much work each week, that sounds like overload! Yeah, 1 and 2 cylinder air-cooled lawn mower engines are not known for refined operation so, a generous de-rating of mounts, CVT, driven shafts, belts, and etc. is always a good idea. Using 1 or 2 large cylinders to make power results in huge torque pulses to the entire system. Your engine/CVT cradle has held up well considering all the abuse. For designs that complex, I make a CAD drawing ahead of time, which also catches some design problems before parts get carved out. Yes, I know the basic, engineering sketch on a napkin has launched many revolutionary ideas, that and it saves time for basic concepts. Keep up the fine work Jimbo, each one of your videos is very interesting, even with the gnomes ocasionally interfering. 😂

your channel is taking off man. honestly im glad i get to see everything taken apart and put back together, kind of like how TV shows in the early 2000's and before used to occasionally do a "last time" segment at the beginning. came here because i wanted to buy a clapped out honda insight and i somehow found your channel. thankfully you talked me out of it and i learned how to spoof the analogue voltage outputs on my 02 civic's MAP/MAF sensor by making a ghetto rigged "MAP enhancer" (just a potentiometer wired in line with the output of the MAP sensor and a rocker switch to either bypass the pot or use it) which let me get scratch the hwy MPG lean burn bug instead of starting a new project car from hell. i figured it was okay to mess with this since honda themselves built a lean burn version of my model civic. got up from ~36-42 hwy mpg up in the low 50's. was driving a lot but finally killed that car with ~400k miles on it when teaching my gf how to drive stick turned into impromptu cardio. owell, got a chevy volt a few months ago once the prices came down since WA state added a ~1.50$/gal gas tax this year. I am learning more than i thought i ever could about cars from your channel. theres nothing else like it on youtube and thats why your channel will keep growing like crazy. thanks for doing all this work. you have to be retired... so much effort goes into these videos for someone who doesnt get millions of views on every video (yet). hope that means youre doing stuff you always wanted to but never had time/re$ources. thanks for uploading man, have a good day :)

Only a quarter way in the video and see the larger pulleys is going in. Very popular modifications for smaller cc scooters with no lowend power. Helps improve lower rpm acceleration and even helps with a slight increase in top speed. We call them over range cvt kits so it's cool seeing similarities between the cvt on this engine.

I, until last year, did not realize what was in a scooter for drive system. They're honestly pretty neat. I had to put a belt on one last summer for my father in law. (Technically he's my wife's grandpa, but her father figure growing up) what an interesting find when I opened it up. 2004 model with an original belt 😂 The whole variator/clutch system was neat. I'd worked on plenty of CVT drives like comet 40s and such. Seeing a new way of use (to me, obviously it's been used for ages) was fun.

My goodness!❤ I adore your engineering skills by a lot! I used to drive Daf cars for ages, and they make use of cvt drive or variomatic... double rubber belt, two sets of pullies, vacuum controled by the inlet manifold... witchcraft! But it worked! I do hope you have a breakthrough now with the new clutch and drive pully... although I'm anxious for the clutch design. If you compare it with the clutch Daf used on their 33 or 44 models it looks a bit flimsy... mind you the daf engines were only 750 and 850 cc, but the clutches were really beefy... anyhow I love this project!

maybe the small CVT's automatic clutch is slipping a bit and causing the pulleys to heat up? I know it's too late now, but for another time. There are two possible settings on a CVT: the speed when the clutch sticks and the speed when the belt starts to rise. the higher the clutch speed, the more power there is but also there is more wear; and the starting setting for belt rise must be that of maximum torque for the best acceleration and end at maximum power for maximum speed.
@Omegadoomship Жыл бұрын
I always look forward to new videos every Sunday! I have a few unconventional engine ideas that could be used for future projects: -Wisconsin V4 engine These old dinosaur work horses were used for industrial applications, but no body uses them because they are big, heavy, and don’t produce music power for their weight. However, they are air cooled and being a V4 layout, it should sound really cool being a super uncommon layout. They made flathead engines but I would try and find an OHV engine. There’s more potential for power with OHV. -Big block Briggs Vanguard of Kohler V-twin. 1000cc. No one seems to do projects on these probably because of their high price tags. They are like the Predator 670 but much bigger and have more power out of the box with room for even more. I know there are some aftermarket performance parts for the 35 HP Briggs Vanguard as they are also used as a marine engine. -2-stroke jet ski engines. They have 2, 3 and 4 cylinders, liquid cooled and sound pretty radical and make a lot of power at high RPM. Getting the liquid cooling to work being a marine engine would be tricky because you would have to convert the cooling system from an open loop to a closed loop system with a radiator. I have a 650cc Yamaha 2-stroke 2-cylinder jet ski engine that I plan on making into a motorcycle one day. It might involve casting some aluminum parts to make it cool properly. An easier solution would be to try and use a snowmobile engine instead, which are more or less the same thing except they are air cooled and often come with their own CVT transmissions. All of these would be significant challenges for one reason or another. But it would make super awesome videos.
