In this video I review some best practices for running generators over night for AC and charging your batteries and equipment. Please keep in mind that I am not a professional or expert and am merely sharing ideas. Please do your own due diligence and make sure that you are comfortable with the risks. Running a generator comes with a risk of death due to carbon monoxide poisoning.

12 volt outlets would be great, if you add a few more batteries, which would sustain them would be good as well. With this in mind, Many people are installing solar panels with inverters to run their accessories. something too consider as it will allow extra electricity for them.

Yeah, ideally I’d like to work towards a solar set up

If it can be exhausted to the outside is the only way you could do this where a breeze will not blow carbon monoxide back into the enclosed part of the boat. The instructions included with the generator will describe this in detail about where to place the generator. The one I use during a blackout at our house has to be placed about 30 feet away from the house. The one for my trailer is about the same. My friend had one on his boat, but it was exhausted into the ocean, which is not recommended either, it is not good for the environment.

What happens when that 40 ft trawler goes by at night while sleeping and puts off a wake big enough to wash over your swim platform and your generator as well. I think there are many reasons why a portable gas generator is unsafe on a boat. My suggestion is get a boat with a marine genset and not worry about them.

When we run our generator we are in secluded anchorages where there are no wakes. A marine genset is maybe $10,000 compared to $800 in this case. With proper precautions, the risk is greatly reduced. We haven’t even had a C02 alarm go off in 3 yrs

So I will assume that you are a serious and thoughtful soul trying to share good advice. I hope you will assume I'm a serious and thoughtful soul trying to do the same thing. There are huge holes in your logic. First, you go through a litany of things that can go wrong, and then you explain how you try to avoid them. I could pick holes in your arguments, but won't waste my time. You aren't receptive, and I'm certain you'd label me as a "conservative safety freak." And you're right; as am EMT and Paramedic, I have seen and treated and lost human beings with CO poisoning. Your net message here is, "go ahead and do it; you'll be OK." But that's just not a valid piece of advice, because it would astound you how many people don't take good advice. That plug in adapter that provides a ground that you tout; all of the manufacturers state that it will void the warranty and may damage the machine. But you advise doing it. People who conclude from your qualifications that to you, it just doesn't;t matter, are putting themselves at risk. Is that really what you intend? My net here is, donated do this. Install a marine genset certified for marine use and in a manner compatible with the American Boat and Yacht Council safety standards. You chances of hurting yourself and others nearby are less of you are willing to do this "right." Just the opinion of this old luddite, hoping all readers here will still be here NEXT Christmas.

Thx but my msg was, boating consists of risks. I am not a professional and that should be evident in my bumbling of boat ownership. The point is to do your own due diligence and decide what level of risk you are comfortable with. My videos are less of a how to or you should do this, they are merely videos showing our adventures and how we deal with certain issues and I welcome constructive feedback that helps me learn as a boater.
