This format is amazing… Hope people can appreciate how much knowledge and experience one can get from divers like them, listening different points of view and thinking process!!

Just returning to diving after being out of the water for 20 years and started binge-watching Dive Talk with my son a few months ago. This is the best episode yet! One thing to remember when evaluating an unknown buddy; experience doesn't equal competence. Someone could be vastly experienced and still rubbish. Contentious topic for the future: DIR set-up for recreational open water diving? I'd love to watch you host the opposing arguments.

People lie or exaggerate, I just when diving in the Caribbean and the other person said she was going to go for her dive masters, I’ve been diving for 35 years learned cold water to start and have just never felt the need to get any other certifications as I do it because I love looking at all the things and just enjoying myself, so with the knowledge and experience I thought she had I said you lead. She didn’t know how to dive in a strong current, swam like a seahorse and after the dive said she got narked, we went down to around 90-100 ft, she was panicking and breathing too hard. I was my usual calm relaxed self and did see she was struggling so it really made me wonder how she got certified to the level she said she was at and was ready to get her masters! Diving with any of you guys would be absolutely amazing 👍🤿

Just listening to Woody's approach to meeting an unknown driver... the humbleness, care, and info gathering approach was just hands down perfection and a big reason why i follow you guys. I'm a DM and looking forward to continuing up the ranks as time goes on and look forward to practicing the acceptance, patience and sharing the love for the sport as Woody does.

Great chat, and love Dive Talk! However I do find it a little rich that Gus broached the ‘zero to hero’ diver, as he himself seemed to progress exceptionally quickly through technical diving, and talk with authority on it, soon after gaining his open water certification in circa 2019
@DIVETALKPLUS19 сағат бұрын
With “authority”? You mean being factual? Do you have any examples of me “speaking with authority” in 2019? I ask because our first video ever was posted in 2020, however I got certified as a rebreather diver in 2019 and since then I’ve logged over 500 rebreather dives, 142 of those to be exact have been in caves. I’m certified in 4 CCRs and my last 3 CCR instructors were Edd Sorenson, Brian Kakuk, and Mike Young. I don’t necessarily speak from authority, I don’t consider myself to be “an authority in diving”, but I do speak from a point of personal experience. You don’t have to have 1,000+ dives to speak from personal experience, an open water diver with 4 dives can make a video and talk about their personal experience, and we should welcome that, instead of discouraging them from sharing their experiences because they may come out as “rich”, whatever that means. Ultimately, I think it’s weird that you have a problem with the co-host of Dive Talk actually talking about diving 🥴
@davidthommo789111 сағат бұрын
@ absolutely you have great experience now, and have taken courses from some legends. Don’t doubt your current ability at all; far more advanced than myself at ANDP. But going from an open water course in 2018 to a rebreather in 2019 would be considered by many as an aggressive progression through diving. And posting “cave diver reacts” video in 2020, two years after your open water course, infers authority and expertise

Achim has covered "deflating to go up" in an interesting way on his channel when talking about a rebreather "accident" where the diver clearly didnt understand this theory during a bailout... When you have a rebreather you basically have a second BCD (or third, if you have a drysuit) you need to manage the gas expansion in.

Hearing you mention it, wondering if y'all could do a section about dive prepping on a boat? Been diving for the last year or so, about 50 dives doing shore entries in Idaho. Recently took a vacation to Hawaii and had a chance to do a 3 tank dive charter, using mostly rented gear. From this point forward I will always bring my personal gear, but would love to know the right etiquette to expect in diving from a boat

I notice that beautiful Mk3 on your wrist! As Shearwater divers, we’re about 95% ready to purchase the Mk3i. The ONLY thing stopping us is the concern about the Subwave “chirping”. We saw your review and as you know, some say it’s a dealbreaker, others say it’s no big deal at all. After having used it, what is your opinion on that now? The same? There is no way for us to know how it’ll work for us unless we purchase and try it. An expensive “gamble”. But we are 100% sold on it.. other than that. Certainly with the proposed x50i updates to the Mk3 series!
@DIVETALKPLUS2 күн бұрын
I feel the same. That chirping is insane!
@ybkseraph2 күн бұрын
The Mk3i is very tempting because it’s a smart watch… But if you are “serious” diver Shearwater is the way to go - you will not regret it.

He lost me at 5:30 seems like the guy in orange forgets hes talking to new divers. Sorry i dont know my sac rate. When i did my ow dives, i didnt have my own computer. I dont know my sac rate. I know after 30 minutes and a dry suit, i was at 300psi remaining where others had 800-1000. So yes its like rocket science to me.
@CoastalDevelopment20 сағат бұрын
The "orange guy" here :-) I am well aware I talk to new divers and even more aware that unfortunately a lot of them received bad training - otherwiese they would know their sac rate as it is one of thoses essentials you need to have to make a proper dive plan. So i am not blaming the divers but the bad instructors that dont do what they get paid for.

Why does Achem have two inflators on his drysuit - I saw one on his waist....
@CoastalDevelopment20 сағат бұрын
I am diving a lot of chest mounted Rebreathers, mostly Military O2-RBs and then access to the inflator on the chest is kind of blocked - thats why I have this additional one on all of my suits.

I completly disagree, that it is a mistake, to rely on a divecomputer, because they calculate with the same dc-models as for eg a paper dc- tabel, as far as I am informed right. So what choice does one have, as to rely on something, that was not own invention ??? And as we know, DC is indeed noting exactly calculabe for everyone in every situation, too much variables. So what ?? I think divers need something that is reliable enough, as the innumerous number of computers out there shows, and, may be your approach in Techdive is right, but you guys were talking about beginners or just recreational divers. Anyway I think you are the BEST on all of these youtube channels and thank you very much for all of your efforts, which are necessary for your contents !!

I tried watching Achim's channel, but unlike you guys, there's definitely a bunch of ego in his commentary. Couldnt handle it anymore
@maxtee25732 күн бұрын
He just has a firm way of talking. If I remember correctly, somebody asked him in the comments if he had some military background and he confirmed it. People ask him all the time about his vast experience, which is what he delivers.
@provuksmc66192 күн бұрын
I wouldn't call it ego. Yes his Humor is different. But his way of speaking derived from all his knowledge and confidence that its the right thing that hes saying.

@maxtee2573 after 30+ years in law enforcement, I actually prefer a direct "no BS" instructor. But there's a difference. At his level of experience and age, most instructors are done proving themselves. Even here he couldn't help himself. Starting the answer with "It's not a rocket science" tells me a lot. I'm a relatively new instructor, but if I ever start answering my students' questions like that, please take away my instructor license and never let me teach again
