Gulf Coast Spey here FFI Certified Fly Casting Instructor just wanted to say great take and good line management to put the fish on the reel to fight. One tip to help you from me is reduce slack between line hand holding the line and the first guide on the rod. If you watch your video your hod and and line hand are far apart and that is a area for slack to cheap into the cast. Try keeping your line hand and rod hand closer together when making the cast tp reduce that slack. Sort of letting the line hand follow the rod hand comfortable during the cast. Get in habit of doing this because when you learn the double haul you will be set up better to implement the pull of the fly line when learning to haul. Hope this helps. All the best Gary with Gulf Coast Spey. Again great to see you nail that Red!

Gary here with Gulf Coast Spey. The fly fishing term you were wanting to convey. Technical term is " Turn Over" of the leader. Note on reds I generally use 6' of straight 20 lbs Tippet Mono Nylon leader. You had the correct setup for the cast. Tight lines Gary GCS (Gulf Coast Spey)

Fly casting tip I learned from a Florida tarpon angler: The way you jerk the line to flick your wrist back, do the same at the apex of your cast forward and let go of the line just before you flick forward for the actual cast. It accelerates the fly exponentially.

I figured this out after filming with my last battery. I stayed out there for a while just practicing and man I was doing good 👍. Thanks for looking out!

Mark I’m super impressed with how quick you are picking up fly fishing. Couple comments… try casting with a little less fly line out, there’s a point where it becomes difficult to have a clean cast if you have too much line. If you need more distance you can start double hauling. On your back cast slow it down and allow your line to go behind you fully, that way when you cast forward it will be “spring loaded” and you’ll get more distance. Lastly try to avoid “trout setting” just keep stripping line in and when you feel a strong bite strip set the line, no need to lift the rod up abruptly. You probably would have landed the second fish if you had done this. It’s so hard to rewire the brain after years of setting the hook. But for real you are doing so well, congrats on the first fly red!

I grew up in the NE catching salmon on the fly. Catching redfish on the fly is something I wanted to do ever since I moved down to Texas in 2004 and haven’t done yet. You have inspired me on what to do with my newly acquired 2021 Outback. BTW, every fly reel is slightly different, but it usually involves swapping the direction of the gear or gear nut on the shaft of the reel. After you figure that out, don't forget, you have to pull the line and re-spool the line in the correct direction.

Fight the fish in the same manner you make a retrieve........pull line with the free hand and catch it against the rod handle with index finger of the rod hand. Using the reel crank to get a fish in can lead to the line bunching up on one side of the spool, eventually locking up the reel. Until you get proficient strive for accuracy with shorter casts. Grew up fly rodding for bass with big cork-headed, feather-tailed poppers.......quite a hoot!

Only when you are practicing, turn your head and watch you back cast. It accomplishes two things. It will improve your timing, give you a better idea that your backcast is 180 degrees opposite your forward cast and the act of turning your head back and forth will prevent you from overpowering the forward cast. I guess that’s three things. Great catch. Fun,ain’t it.

If the fly isn’t laying over properly your “tippet” or the last section of leader maybe too light. Also, put a little more break in that wrist bruv. It almost looks like your trying to NOT break your worst? Or am I seeing things? Flip Pallot says it’s ok to break the wrist and he’s a saltwater fly legend. Keep up the sick fly vids!
