S90V Manix 2 beat down, how tough is it and what will it take? Did it explode, break or do great?

S90V Manix 2 light weight beat down. Some wood chopping, carving, apex twisting, lateral force, copper, brass and aluminum carving. Did it chip, roll, explode, break, shatter or do just fine? I've seen quite a few mid size fixed blades lately in S90V advertised as outdoors blades. I wanted to see if it was hype or would it do fine. If you would like to see more videos like this let me know, I'm thinking D2 next.

This testing video is some of your best work IMHO... most knife steel tests nowadays focus only on edge retention. Your video also show toughness and edge stabiliy as far as the small blade allows it. I highly appreciate! Thanks for sharing and keep up the great work. Much love from Switzerland

It would be interesting to see how something like 14c28n held up to these tests. Supposedly way tougher but way less wear resistance. I'll have to check out your video were you fixed the edge. My experience with s90v is that it doesn't like to straighten back out without chipping if it rolls.

I have used s110v never s90v but I've had a good experience with it. The edge had gotten some microchips in it. I can't fault the steel or the knife which is a pm2. That was from lateral movement on my part through heavy wood medium. I've enjoyed s110v. At least my Spyderco has had no major issues in the 4 years I've owned it

It's not all going to be 62 hrc, I have others and 2 were also teated at 61 hrc. The nice thing about S90V from Spyderco is even the mid 59 hrc stuff will cut over 400 feet in a 1 inch section.

Spyderco does such a great job with their steel heat treats and grinds. I just bought their PM2 with a tanto blade. Excited to receive it. If it's not right, they throw it out. It's great to know you get a good product with them. I have only had 1 problem where they didn't make a warranty issue right.

With this thick grind, I would throw it to the bin if it get chipped after some shaving :)) That being said, the test gets interesting after 14th minute. As expected it did not hold up very well. But those were quite tough tests for the S90V. Although, it could have survived the alluminium one as the alluminium is not a very hard material, but I think it was the lateral strees which rolled the edge. I was expecting a chip rather than a roll though, considering it is 62HRC? Try LC200N and you will surprised. It is though as nails! My Waterway does survive frozen bone carving with no chip or roll, and it has much thinner grind (10 thousand) than the Sypderco folders! I also sharpen it to 14 degrees per side.

I have seen your other S90V video that took quite a few sharpenings before the steel got to the performance you seemed to expect. Would you think you would see better performance from a different knife in S90V possibly processed better. Or do you think this tester was sharpened enough to get a good gauge of this steels performance?
@tacticalcenter8658
@tacticalcenter8658 3 жыл бұрын
Id say it's a fair assessment of what to expect from spyderco's s90v @ 62hrc after sharpening away probably most of the fatigued factory grind. Especially considering factory grinds can be a bit chippy from my experience. It goes away after a few sharpenings. I don't think the majority of spyderco s90v is anywhere close to 62hrc though, so this is probably a rare case here.
@Outpost_76
@Outpost_76 3 жыл бұрын
This has had a couple dozen edges at least before this test. This Manix has been heavily used and sharpened. Most production steels are going to take 3 + sharpenings before you get repeated performance.

Do you have cardboard footage cut test data for the manix-2 S90V? I like to compare steels of the same model knife to judge its performance more so than from manufacturer to manufacturer. I have your manix-2 data in 20CV , M390 , M4 and Spy-27 (which you equate to S30V) but I'd like to have data for S10V, S90V and S45VN. Can you direct me to that info please? Thank you bro, for all your hard work.
