It blows my mind that there are users/enthusiasts/collectors out there who are so into knives and more specifically super steels but they don’t know how to sharpen and instead send them away to get a warranty factory belt sharpening. Not to mention that the factory is going to take off way more steel with the belt than you could with multiple sharpening. I guess it will really insure that their factory edge is fully burnt and providing the least amount of performance in their highly revered super steel! All jokes aside, listen to the man and learn to sharpen folks, the performance increase is almost hard to fathom until you experience it first hand! Also in my opinion it really adds another level of appreciation and pride to your knife and can be a great sub-hobby within an already great hobby. As always great video!

Honestly, they get the impression that most people who insist on the very highest Edge retention do so because they do not know how to sharpen. I'd rather have a knife but was something that's considered lower end like vg10 and know how to sharpen by hand over the highest Edge holding steel and not have a clue. Some who knows what they are doing, you could make even something that is borderline terrible(420HC or something) last many many years of heavy use.

I WANT to learn how to sharpen. But after spending fat too much time on YT looking at so many conflicting approaches I am lost. Who do you recommend to learn from. So far I have been stroppping to maintain my factory edge. But it won't last forever. I want to hand sharpen or use a system. What do you recommend?

Nice. I've got that crupm2 and the lil native s90v. Always cool to see you test knives I've got. The crupm2 having a smaller bevel at the same angle means it's thinner behind the edge and therefore a better geometry for the steel, right? I had no idea their primary grinds varied that much. Cruwear is a great candidate for a thin edge. Interesting!
@Outpost_76
@Outpost_76 3 жыл бұрын
The grinds seem to vary a little. Out of my Para 3's the 4V and S90V are both thinner than all the others. Every once in a while you find a thinner one, not by a huge amount but thinner. Out of my 30 Manix they also vary, the older ones are thicker. My 2011 M4 and 2014 Cruwear are both thicker than the newer ones.

Awesome test and results.... thankyou mate... 🍻.... I also noted that my DLT cruwear pm2 had a stickier edge than the DLT o.d green s90v from factory.... But your results are outstanding... its really good to have, use, then listen and watch your tests on these steels.... In terms of hardness tho... ( one has to consider geometry) .. say a blade in S90v is at 60 hrc... and a similar blade in the same steel is @ 64... would you expect the higher hrc to out perform the lower one???? Curious to know your thoughts..... as always... gr8 veiwing mate..🍻👍👊

I have a s90v custom at 63.7 HRC and haven't really noticed much difference between that and any of my production S90V, which hasnt been tested but I'm sure is nowhere near that number. S90V is my favorite stainless and I've done a ton of testing with it, and owned a ton of knives with it. In other steels, that difference could would translate to a performance improvement that would be easily noticeable in day to day use, but I haven't seen it in s90v, across several different brands.
@tacticalcenter8658
@tacticalcenter8658 3 жыл бұрын
Hrc does not dictate performance per say. Its more complicated than that. And a manufacturer can raise hrc without actually gaining any performance depending on the heat treatment protocol. The protocol is key. I've seen better protocols at 60hrc out perform knives at 61+hrc with different protocols. So basically you can't really determine much from hrc. With that said spyderco USA use the same protocol and have a variance in hrc for a specific steel... And a lower hrc often will perform lower. There is also a point of the slope where too high an hrc will under perform even with a good protocol, you can often see this in Larins article's. Anyways all sorts of factors matter when comparing steel types and hrc etc.you can't just go off of hrc. Cause a large majority of steels are heat treated to approximately 60hrc and a fair amount do not match in performance in the least. Ie s35vn at 60hrc is around 150 ft cut and s90v at 60hrc is around 400 range. Huge difference. Spydercos m390 at 60hrc is around 300 and spydercos m390 at 62hrc is around 600 range. But if spyderco were to go 63 or 64 it might degrade in performance. (Yet be be seen, don't think there are samples of this, but as Larins charts usually point out, there is a point where it regresses.

@@darrenkirk6576 Tactical Center covered it. My M390 PM2 at 62 rc tested well but my custom M390 from kknives_switzerland at 62 rc out cut the Spyderco by 24%. Smae hardness wildly different results. I do have some custom S90V I'll finish the video on and it's eye opening as well and adds to why I like S90V so much. Look back at the Reate and Shirogorov M390 videos, all 3 came close to the Spyderco M390 at 62 yet only tested between 60 and 61.

The biggest issue you will have to get past is the fear of messing up a knife. Pick which way you want to sharpen, freehand or guided. For freehand a King K80 250/1000 bench stone is a great starter and under 20$. If you want to go the guided route start with a good system. Either way has learning curves so neither will be a fast start over the other.
