SAAB 340 was the first plane I flew as a first officer in the airlines. I flew them from 2007 to 2010, it's an excellent little plane and great for new pilots. It's crazy how time flies it seems like it was just yesterday. Great video.

I flew on a Saab 340 from Boston, MA to Presque Isle, ME a couple of times over the past few years and found it to be a fairly comfortable aircraft to fly on. More legroom than the regional jets that could be used for the same trip. I would definitely fly on one again if I had the chance.

I logged 1200 hours in a 340. They're great planes and very versatile. It was setup for corporate and cargo use. We'd be flying CEOs one day and technicians with cargo the next. It really was a asset to the company I worked for because we could get to a customer with a problem the same day a lot of times.

For the longest time Saab bought back old 340 and 2000 series and converted them to radar and aircontroll aircrafts. They are also converted into military VIP transports due to the existance of the military variatns, the conversions are really quite simple. Worth saying that Saab civilian aircraft division is actually larger than it ever was currently. For the A380 landing gear doors and some rudder surfaces is made by Saab. For the A350 a considerate part of the tail section is made by saab and quite a lot of components. Most of those componenet goes on container to the UK where they are integrated in the wing or tailsection. So most people don´t think of saab as an Airbus contribitur but they are really a quite consiederate part now. Saab now days works mostly with composite. They joined the Airbus support team as late as A380 series if i remember correctly by making the main landing gear door and some of the cargo doors. They later made wingflaps for the UK site for increased production capacity. When the A350 come around Saab start making much more parts. And if i´m not missinformed they now also make some parts for the A320neo.

Good research also on the mishaps, I have flown both types several times as a passenger. You're right they're noisy, especially the 340 - didn't know they got active noise dampening later - I thought it was the new engines that improved on the noise somewhat. But on the early ones it was not possible to have a conversation while in flight, and that was one of their main drawbacks that probably prevented them from being truly popular.
@ClockworksOfGL
@ClockworksOfGL 4 жыл бұрын
Anders Forsgren - Turboprops are invariably noisy but cheap to run. But they’re also slow, which means the plane is tied up longer in flight compared to a jet. A plane that travels 50% faster can carry 50% more passengers per day. Obviously I’m making up numbers, and the math is very complicated, but you can see why airlines would consider jets an option in spite of their higher fuel consumption. And modern turbofans are quite a bit more efficient than grandpa’s JT8Ds.

Never got the chance to fly on a Saab while they served my local airport, but I do have a story about one. Picture the scene: it's 6:50am on a dry but overcast and slightly windy morning. The Saab 2000 to London City is fully boarded and everyone is ready to go, mostly to work, but of course, today of all days, they can't start the engines from the electric starters. Out comes the Air Start Unit, and with its distinct grunt, belch of smoke and then humongous roar, they try to get the engines spinning enough to start. However, 3 attempts later, they're still on stand, with no engines running. Eventually, they decide to give it one more shot, but someone has had a good idea. They shut down (finally!) the ASU, connect the Tug, and push off the stand, turning almost 180 degrees in the middle of the empty taxiway behind them. Brakes on, GPU and ASU connected again, and they give it one more shot, but this time with the wind (of about 10 -15 knots) in front of them, giving the propellers a little extra shove. Finally, the engines spark into life, and about an hour late, all 49 passengers are on their way to the Capital. The ground staff just wish they didn't have to do it all again multiple times a day, for the rest of the week, even if next time the plane is parked into wind to start with, to avoid having to turn it around every time!

worked on the 340A and B for many years and really enjoyed them. They are fun to taxi and do the engine runs and system checks. Overall the plane really served the public well I would say but public opinion against turboprops and low passenger loadout kinda killed them. The 2000 I think is an excellent plane but came to late in the marketplace as their were so many regional jet models available and entering service. The 340 design was good and the plane was quite reliable.

Made several trips on Northwest Airlink’s SAAB 340 out of FYV (Drake Field Fayetteville, AR). Great video for a great aircraft! How about a video on The Convairliners 240, 340, 440, and several turboprop conversations. It came closer than any postwar aircraft to replacing the DC-3 than any other at that time. Around 100 are still in service hauling freight, as research platforms, fighting fires, and even in scheduled passenger service! There are 6 that have been “Stretched” about 15’ to create the Convair 5800.

Never been on a 340 but see & hear Logan Air ones in Isle of Man Airspace . In September 2017 I flew on a 2000 for the first time on a Manchester - Glasgow flight returning a week later , It was one of Eastern’s fleet working in codeshare with the late Flybe. G-CDEB Was it registration and was very well appointed from its past codeshare work with British Airways on the Isle of Man - London City Service so it had big blue comfortable leather seats and big leg room. I found it a nice aircraft and just a little more exclusive ambiance compared to a Dash 8 Q400 of Flybe or a ATR 72 ex Aer Arran .

Pedro DLR of coarse, Michael O’Leary is just making sure his company (Ryanair) continues to grow. The ct-7 engines on the Saab ran much hotter then their helicopter counterparts. Also, if debris, such as a piece of paper covered three or more inlet guide vanes, the engine had to be pulled. If the vanes were partially covered, it set up a vibration on the number five turbine blades that would break off during operations that would cause shrapnel to come out of the cowl at the velocity of a 30-06 rifle.

There are about 20 SF-340's still carrying freight out of Miami for UPS, and I remember the State of Michigan bought a Saab 2000 as the "corporate hack" in the 1990's because Saab the car company was partially owned by General Motors. The funny thing about this last is that Saab the defunct car company has only the name in common with Saab the current aircraft manufacturer...

I appreciate the history of the Saab! I'll be flying on it as a flight attendant in the new year! So I'm trying to learn the history of it and it's specs before initial training 🙂

Saab 2000 is a nice aircraft, good seats, good air, all you can expect for decent airliner, but the plane shake in a strange way compare to a jet, and the engines are freaking LOUD!!!

Oh Yeah. Fairchild was a amazing company. They also helped build the F-4 Phantom F-14 Tomcat , and Space Shuttle.
