Fun fact: there's a little T-handle in the cockpit that the pilot pulls to pre-select thrust reverse before touch down. As soon as the nose wheel has touched down (don't remember the timings and preassure) the three tertiar doors close to reverse the thrust. Then it's full military power to slow the aircraft down.

Never stop loving mighty Viggens! The very top plane of their era! Just see the very rare undercarriage, so its doubled, for heavy loads!

What is the air driven propeller located forward of the left wing for?

Is it normal practice to have the emergency power turbine active during takeoff or landing, on this aircraft? I noticed, also, that the 37 does not use the canard as a speed brake, as does the 39?

If I remember correctly the viggen uses the ram air turbine for power during takeoffs and landings and not just for emergencies. Also the reason the gripen uses the canards as airbarakes is beacuse when designing it they didn't add a thrust reverser but wanted to maintain a short landing distance. The viggen had a thrust reverser so it did not need to do things like that.

The Viggen use the thrust reversing mechanism to slow down. Gripen has it's canards, as noted. The thrust reversing feature of Viggen is quite heavy - both in kgs and in maintainance (as far as I know - at least compared to traditional airbrakes). When designing the Gripen they opted for a lighter solution and the canards - I assume - was deemed enough to do the job (combined with effective wheel breakes AND the deflection of the control surfaces of the wings too). In fact, I believe the Gripen can stop at the same distance as the Viggen (while carryingt the same amount of load but having about half the empty weight). As for the RAT I believe it also differs between variants of the Viggen? Not sure though.

i believe it powers an auxilliary power unit, but dont quote me on it as im not entirely sure

And it as well had the first flight on 8 February 1967 and entered service in 21 June 1971 I take it?

If you mean that it can takeoff and land, that is true. Most aircraft can. If you talk about the reverse, that is not true. The F20 had no reverse function what so ever. As far as I know it’s only the Viggen and the Tornado that has/had that ability.

Ali Mirza The F-20 never even went into production anyway. It was a proposal for the cheapest possible fighter but it never had reverse thrust.
