I assess the engine health in this video by doing a compression test, a leak down test and visual inspection.
Is the Saab engine any good?

I think the comprssion will be better after driving the Car for a while. In the past I fill STP oil treatment in , the compession get higher with this phantastic stuff . Greetings Edward

Yea I think so too... also a hot engine will help. :) Think its around 170-180 from factory :)

Those compression readings are quite encouraging and with regular daily use, may even improve. If that SAAB was in my care, I think that old engine is an ideal candidate for the "Diesel Fuel" flushing treatment. Rings and many moving parts would benefit.

Thanks for the video Seppo! Thanks for reminding me I need to get me a compression tester 😅. I have a gasoline generator that doesn't start and I susspect it's the compression issue. The uniqueness of saab engine bay is making me dizzy a bit 🤣. What a cool car!

The valve on the vaccum looks very much like the pcv valve you get on a mk1 Ford Focus!

8V's are getting rarer. I have an 81 turbo (non-apc) which used to run but currently doesn't and I think it's a K-jet issue as it will start if I fire starter fluid into the intake before cranking.

Yea... could very well be the cold start valve... :) or temp sensor.

I think those piston rings will come around with use. SAAB's always were a little odd, the reverse engine was a surprise though!

Please check the Valve clearence. The 8V has no Hydro lifters. If exhaust is below 0,35 you have to du something if its above 0,35 its ok.

Turbo does look a tad crusty in there, stil, could be worse, my dad once had an Austin Montego (well, "Rover" really, but without the Rover name) with the 2.0L Perkins Prima diesel engine, it had a knackered turbo which made a properly bad squeal on boost, indicating its' bearings were shot, he thought it was meant to do that, 'til it filled the intake with oil making it tough (and very smoky) to start... :S
