Saab Gripen RC scale 1:2

Clearly the army of commenters all saying "flies too slow" etc. etc. etc. have never been to an actual airshow and seen how slowly the real thing "appears" to fly. This is the most scale-believable giant-size RC build I've ever seen (along with the similar-sized white Vulcan in the video where they recover it after an engine flameout.) By all means, post video of your own 1:2 scale jets and we'll do a head-to-head comparison. :)

The problem isn't the speed (or lack thereof) itself, but rather the very very obvious lack of proper wing loading. It is way, way, way too light for its size, and unfortunately this fact shines through most of the time.

It's way, way too slow. Just shows how ridiculously light this model was built. No wonder it disintegrated later. You need way higher wing loading for models like this to fly scale.

Yes, I have noticed that too. They look really lazy and slow. The power plants that are on the market don't have the power for huge scale. Or is it an optical illusion?

It's all about thrust:weight. This model is so much heavier but I doubt that the turbines are big and efficient enough to deliver thrust.

It's about wing loading. The models are probably feather light compared to the real thing and I think they need to be because the power plant to fly at more realisting wing loading are not economically viable.

The ratio Weight and Thrust is nearly 1:1. The measure is 7 meters long. It's not slow it's only a optical illusion, because the model is the half of an original Saab Gripen...

A BD 5J microjet is only 12 feet long with a 17 foot wingspan and 326lbs of thrust at 358lbs empty weight. This RC jet might be able to carry a man with slightly more power.

Maybe it looks that way because the weight is not to scale? If it was truly 1:2 scale (not just in size but in weight) it would weigh about a tonne (1/8 the weight of the real one).

Yes, power-to-weight is roughly equal to the real one but having a 1/10 the weight of what it "should" be makes it look more flimsy and subject to wind gusts. Maybe that's why it looks under powered but really isn't?
