Man those bent rods really solidified that i need to make sure my fuel lines are fully flushed before i reinstall the fuel tank on my sonett. Thanks for the recommendation on that B-12 stuff i’m going to pick up a can of it to use for flushing the lines out. Great videos keep them coming!
@SealedBeamRallyTeam3 жыл бұрын
Luckily the electric fuel pump someone installed behind the seat caught a lot of the varnish for me. I think some probably came through the lines though. Best of luck with yours! Make sure to bottle feed the carb with berrymans when you start it up. Dump a whole can in. Dump a couple cans in the tank for good measure. Cheap insurance!

It looks like you got one rocker shaft that is from an older open deck V4 engine. The style was changed to closed deck in 1968. So it seems like somebody mixed up stuff here, either older open deck engine in the car that should have a closed deck engine, or pulled parts from the wrong engine and put on the different style one. The parts are not compatible between open and closed deck counting for the cylinder heads including head gasket and rockers. Some parts of the bottom end are same like crankshaft, balance shaft, conrods, pistons. So take care you got the good combination of parts on your engine. Also, first thing to do before starting the engine is checking and adjusting the valve play clearance, otherwise you get bent rods. The push rods are same on V4 and V6 (both Cologne).

Dang, so the extra holes are a no-go? I figured more oil wouldn't be an issue. Would it be a problem with uneven oiling to the rockers? I adjusted valve lash before starting
@erikstreda59803 жыл бұрын
@@SealedBeamRallyTeam Well, watch the video, everything explained there. You need to check first what engine block you got in there, if it is a closed deck like it should be, or open deck (replacement from an old junk yard Saab 96 or something). If you mix the parts the oiling is not working properly. Just don't mix parts that are not supposed to be mixed. ;-) Also a common problem is that the oil channel in the block up to the rocker shafts gets clogged with oil gunk and then not enough oiling up there. That cost me two lifters and a sports camshaft... :-(

Congrats on getting the fuel and valve issue solved. To blow new life into a sleeper is more than inflating the tyres and filling up the tank o:-). One thing I forgot to mention earlier: don't use the balance shaft pulley for turning the engine manually. You'll most probably have a gear wheel on the balance shaft with with raisin teeth and shouldn't be exposed to the strain of an engine building up pressure and a gear box, not even on idle. These teeth are known to shear off and then you can pull the engine (or at least lift it up) for loosening the dump, so that you can exchange the gear wheel. Crank advance should be at 6 degrees before TDC. More advance will influence starting badly. In the wpm should be graphs that show mechanical and vacuum advance. Did you get to installing the new dizzy?
@SealedBeamRallyTeam3 жыл бұрын
What pulley do you turn the engine with? The balance shaft one is the only one with a bolt head on it. Most people seem to run more initial advance than the factory 6°. I'm going to follow Ashcraft's instructions for the rebuilt/recurved dizzy :)

@@SealedBeamRallyTeam Engage 3rd r 4th gear get one wheel off the ground and rotate the wheel, alternatively keep both wheels on the ground and move the whole car. The balance shaft construction is a bit of a weak point. Don't overtighten the fan belt as if will wear out and bugger up the oil pressure. The bearings can only be exchanged with the engine out as it is approached from the rear of the engine. I saw in this film that the vacuum port on the carb is plugged zo no air leak there. For engine parts as push rods and such og is best to look for Saab 96 parts; in case you haven't found out already this is the model the engine, gear box chassis and suspension originate from. Just check eBay and use either Saab V4 or Saab Sonett AS search term, there are quite a few things that will show up. In the ads at the bottom it is quite likely that a company specialised in V4 parts will show up. Might be handy.

@@browserrr1 to be honest i think I'd rather get the metal timing gears. They are about $400, but that's an upgrade I expect to make at some point anyway Well aware of what this engine came in, but the Saabs are the most common V4 car over here.. The problem is we don't have much parts support for the V4, and even the Cologne V6 parts are getting a little harder to come by. I end up ordering most parts online because the local stores don't carry things. Luckily, the parts are still available.

The good news is that bent v4 pushrods make great fuel line plugs. I keep a pushrod on my wall of shame just for this purpose. For what it's worth, my 74 rocker arm assembly does not have posts with the little oil spout. I am relatively certain my rocker arm assembly was original with the 74 motor (1.7l closed deck)

Do you have a two-port vacuum canister or one port?
@jonathanknez12833 жыл бұрын
@@SealedBeamRallyTeam Well, my car never had a vacuum reservoir, and the guy I bought it from was not a tinkerer so I think it was originally without a vacuum reservoir. There was a two port charcoal canister on left of the engine bay. One line went back to the gas tank, and the other much larger line went up to the air cleaner assembly. Other than that, there is a vacuum manifold just above the thermostat housing. Mine has 3 ports and I believe is sensitive to the temperature of the coolant, allowing vacuum to pass between ports when hot, or cold, I am not sure. With my new carb setup I don't use that vacuum manifold any more. Hope that helps.

All of them came with vacuum advance, but later cars came with both vacuum advance *and* vacuum retard, for emissions purposes. I'm curious because your rockers match those of my spare engine which has an early distributor.

There's a set of DXF files floating around that contains most of the gaskets for the V4 engine, in case you weren't aware of it. You can print out a template and just cut a new one out of cork or paper, as required. I'm on the road for work right now, but I can send it to you when I get home this weekend, if you want?
