The complete opposite to what is claimed in video it is p-e-r-f-e-c-t-l-y suited for exactly night driving because you have the e-x-a-c-t same glow in the instruments as the headlights give on the road. I’m surprised that you found such a difference. The 900 was good for half a million miles and was incredibly well built. Were you driving the GM 900?
@larszenthio101214 күн бұрын
The comfort and driving feeling in a Mercedes 190E is like sitting in a church pew in a 70s German car. Stiff and uncomfortable. Mercedes has never been much of a winter car either. More than 5 cm of snow and you have trouble getting started. SAAB, on the other hand, has seats designed by orthopedists and the driving pleasure comes as soon as you release the clutch and press the gas. Better comfort is hard to find in a passenger car in the 90s, even on long journeys, all season long. Have driven all types of cars since the late 70's and still prefer SAAB. Driven SAAB since 1977. 😎👍
@ruicvt14 күн бұрын
@nuttycommuter3718 You're correct, it was the 900 with the Opel Vectra platform. But I assumed, due to the age of the project, that this older generation was no better.
@nuttycommuter371814 күн бұрын
@ you’d have hoped, but unfortunately the GM 900 was nowhere near as good as the previous generation. You can hear it in the way the doors close. I haven’t driven the Mercedes, but for “robustness”, the original 900 is up there with the best there is. When the 99 (from which the 900 was born) went rallying it didn’t need a roll cage for safety. It had to have one for regs, but the roof was strong enough. For a decent amount of time, the engines for the 900 were built in Scania’s factory. They go on forever and ever.

@@larszenthio1012 I remember reading Car magazine when I was 12/13 (early 90’s) and then saying “SAAB seats are the best you will find in any car”. It’s tiny degrees though. I still get in my 9-5 and go “ooh yes”

Very honest and useful video for Saab sales people. The video doesn't degrade the 190 E, like other car manufacturers videos or brochures do with rival cars. I don't get old school Mercs, for me they are very unappealing unless they are top of the range models loaded with extras. That 190 2.0 with hubcups and manual transmission has zero interest to me. I would have bought a NA 900 instead of that 190 E in the blink of an eye, even if for the price of a basic 190 E probably I could have bought a 900 Turbo.

@@Thehunter85 And I had a 190E Sportline as a new car in northern Germany. This rear-wheel drive car was fantastically smooth to drive on the German motorways and the workmanship was absolutely top-notch. You simply don't get such smooth steering at high speeds with front-wheel drive vehicles and the four-cylinder engines can't even come close to the smoothness of a six-cylinder. As I said, I'm a Saab fan and actually wanted to buy the Saab 900 16S Aero as a three-door sedan in the early 1990s. Due to the thin Saab dealer network, I ended up buying the Mercedes-Benz. But I won't let the Mercedes-Benzes from the late 1980s to 1993 be portrayed as bad vehicles. In my experience, these cars were among the best that could be bought in the automotive sector. Of course, I also drove the 190E with winter tires on ice and snow and you have to be able to drive them. For novice drivers, a front-scratcher is certainly easier to drive, but you should know one basic rule. If the rear-wheel drive vehicle skids on a slippery road, immediately disengage the clutch and the vehicle will travel straight again.
@Thehunter8510 күн бұрын
@@ULTRA_2112 OK, I can see your point. Dont want to soud arrogant. If you look at it the other way around, In the 80s and 90s Saab was using turbocharged engines per deafult. With smaller engine displacement they had equal power and quite often more torque than equivalent competition from Mercedes or BMW (not talking about Audi), which related to lower fuel consumption, lower taxes, better passing and overtaking times, much better (not talking 0-100 kmh), and better tuning potential. To get same performance and power as my dad's 9000 aero, we had to buy a german V8 at least, which would cost more and have higher runimg costs. And that car was so smoooth as any v6, or v8, didnt have the sound of one though :) SAAB were way ahead of competition, just majority of people didn't see that. Fast forward 40 years and lets talk turbo charging now, where every car manufacturer including Mercedes has at least 1 turbo, in some cases 2-3 turbos. And of course than comes safety, in which the swedes were pioneers a lot of times. Cheers

Such a super blast from the past Marcus and Manuela! Tack så mycket. I love this retro stuff. It makes me feel 30 years younger. 😂 The objectivity of this was aimed at educating the Saab salesforce. Knowing your competition's strong and weak points was key to being as educated as your customers. Saab customers were indeed an educated group as the video suggests. I have owned a 1983 C900 Turbo and still own a 2007 9-3 2.0t. The difference between the "native" Saab and the post GM Saab is quite distinct, but still far superior to the Opels and Fiats I have driven when in Europe. I came from a staunch Mercedes family. There is still a 1959 219 in our family barn which I have driven extensively when I was young. (Same body style as the older Benz in the video) We also had a 1974 280 sedan. The build qualitty was very high, but the supportive seats and "drive feeling" of the Saabs wins me over every time. Sadly, the build quality of Mercedes has sunk to levels I never imagined. My brother's 2010 GL250 is riddled with build quality issues. Fun fact, while developing the 190 series "Baby Benz", the engineers at Mercedes were told the only way that car would be approved for production would be if it would be indistinguishable to the dtiver from an S Class. I'm not sure they accomplished that, but the later versions with the larger engines and racing suspensions were far closer to that objective than the model demonstrated in this video. Congrats to all who made it to the end of this VERY LONG COMMENT! I hope I didn't bore you too much. 😂❤ Viva Saab!!
