@@MMSaabChannel We liked them both. The 740 (only a flat battery in 8 years) was more reliable as the 9000's DIC failed after 6 months and blew its HG at 118 mph in the UK. It had a hard life with us though. It was replaced by a 940 Celebration.. which we still have. Parked beside a 9-5 SC..! One thing I will say is that the seats in both cars, leather in the Volvo and 9000's velour (spec'd by Dad on a Turbo..!) beats anything on the market today. Turning circle on the Volvos is phenomenal, how they got it so wrong from the C70 on is impressive.

It's form vs. function tradeoff. That pretty shape destroys both the luggage space and the rear seat head room. The same problem is repeated in Saab 9000, Ford Mondeo and the early Skoda Superb. By mounting the huge tail gate hinge right above the rear seat, the tail gate hinges push the roof lining to where I would put my head. The luggage space is good for sedan, but limited compared to 745. Both promblems are easily corrected by moving the tail gate hinge one meter further back. Just like in 745, which is the perfect shape in terms on practicality. There is something fundamentally wrong in the design, if you cannot construct a recognizable miniature model of a car using two Lego bricks 😀

Both cars are legendary, yet they feel quite different. The Volvo 200, 700, and 900 series feel like a tank on the road. Speed bumps? What’s that? Potholes? Never heard of them. The Saab 9000, on the other hand, feels like a very lively organism that the driver senses through their fingertips-the steering is fairly sharp, and the gear shifter vibrates under acceleration. And then there’s that classic SAAB moment: “Nothing… Nothing… Holy crap, we’re taking off!” The 9-5, however, is completely different with its subframe and bushings, giving it a smoother, more refined feel. It’s more of a GT car with an automatic transmission. Personally, I want to add a 945 Wagon and a 9-3 Viggen Convertible to my collection.

When I was growing up, our family always had Volvo. When I was a baby, my parents had a red P1800, that got stolen. Then they bought a 142, a rust bucket if there ever was one. Then we had a 240 GL in a beautiful green metallic, that unfortunately ended up on a field next to the highway, RWD, with the boot full of stuff, not good on a snow covered highway. The fact that it got rear ended at one time, by a SAAB 900 nonetheless, maybe affected the handling in a negative way, not sure. Our next car was a 740 GLE, which became my first car when I took my drivers license. It started to rust quite badly after a while. Nowadays I drive a 2nd gen Toyota Auris. Our last Volvo was/is an 850, my dad still has it in his garage, but he almost never drives it, he has a 3rd gen Toyota Avensis as a daily driver. That five cylinder engine in the 850 sounds nice though. Since Ford bought Volvo, he refuses to touch the post Ford Volvos with a 10 foot pole. Was there never any SAABs in our family? Sure, my grandparents on my mom's side had two, a brown 900 four door sedan, and a blue metallic 900 two door sedan. Even though we exclusively had Volvos when I was growing up, I have always had a soft spot for SAAB, especially the 1st gen 900, I would love to own a turbo, or an Aero. I'd also like to have a Volvo 240 GLT, or an 850 T5R. Or maybe a 780, it is quite good looking, in an understated kind of way. Or why not an S60 R-design... I know why though, money, or lack thereof, I guess I'm stuck with my Toyota, but it takes me where I need to go without any fuss, and it does so cheaply, so I guess it could be worse.

There was a six cylinder four door version as well, called the 164. It was kinda cool looking, trying to look like a Jaguar, even if it didn't quite pull it off.

The video must be criticized for not being impartial. The Volvo interior is criticized, but the Saab's interior is neither shown nor is it said why it is supposed to be better. This is not an objective test; as an outside observer you have to describe this as completely subjective bias at its worst. The brake test is also not objective. If you look closely, the Volvo is ahead of the Saab before braking is initiated. When both vehicles come to a stop, the Volvo is just a little bit ahead of the Saab. What is not said, which is again indecent, is that the Saab's braking performance is probably worse. In an objective comparison test, both vehicles must be at the same height and start braking at the same time. That's not what's shown here and that's clearly not impartial. The crash test is also not impartial. The video shows the complete Saab crash test, but in order to make a proper comparison you would also have to show the Volvo test, but this test is missing. Again, not an objective test and therefore an example of how it should not be done.

@@MMSaabChannel I didn't miss that. But to act as if it was a real car test and then to proceed in such a one-sided manner is more than scandalous and biased. Volvo's interiors were absolute garbage somewhere until the mid 2000s when Volvo finally learned what quality is. Touché! At least I did not buy my 740 for the sake of its handling but for its practicality, despite its obvious handling issues. I don't like the lack of balance as 740 is almost as badly nose-heavy as typical FWD. While not fast, at least it's predictable and always easy to handle. Understeer takes much more time and space to correct it. And BTW, visible sliding is for teens. For adult drivers, it's enough to feel the rear wheels scratching the ice, sliding very gently just one or two centimeters but not more to slow down the speed by losing traction. The lack of headroom on the back seat of Saab 9000 and FWD dropped off Audi 100 and Saab 9000 from my shopping list. Mercedes 190 (W201) would have been both RWD and affordable but just like Saab, it's too small to be practical. Mercedes W124 which later became the first E-class would have ticked all the boxes in comfort, space, handling and longevity, but I just could not afford it.

I have Saab 900 T16 and volvo 740 GLE. Both are great cars but very different. Volvo is a slow glider tank and can feel like you are in a boat but in a good way. The saab feel more sporty and responsive. however if i was sent to mars i would get the volvo, but mine do got the older B230 "redblock" engine and they just last a very long time. They did not mention that the saabs are rust buckets, thats why the older ones are almost all gone. I had to rebuild my whole front of mine because at some places even the rust was gone. Volvos do not rust as bad.

@@MMSaabChannel Nä, det var förstås vintersulor, men den var ansenligt bullrigare än en Volvo 740. Det kan jag intyga. Man fick bullerskador av en 10-timmars resa i landsvägsfart. Bilen var helt original. 😅

Volvo was years behind Saab, and both of them were always behind the Germans in everything except Saabs turbotechnology in the 70s - 90s. After that, everything has only gone down. Both for Saab quality wise, and Volvo too. Which is today owned by the Chinese.
@sssxxxttt29 күн бұрын
The overall crash protection was only surpassed/equalled by mercedes E-class of the German cars. Also, it was said, the complete development budget of the all new Volvo 850 series was equal to Mercedes budget for their E-class rear axle alone.
@kalle554828 күн бұрын
Yeah BMW and Mercedes were better cars and ahead of Volvo and Saab, but they were also considerably cheaper cars that everyone could buy. The P2 platform Volvos was Volvos start of going upmarket and today the difference between a Mercedes/BMW and a Volvo are small, and if we look at the newer models Volvo are the best looking and have the better interiors in the same priceclass. It's sad Volvo is Chinese owned, but Geely has been kind to Volvo and let then do more or less as they please, and Volvos are still developed here in Sweden :)

@@kalle5548 Today's cars are garbage. Volvo, BMW, doesn't matter. Soulless cash grabbing with no interest for design. The P2 platform was absolutely going upmarket, but at the cost of becoming Fordified. Here we are 15-20 years later. To choose a Volvo on a Ford platform, or a Saab on an Opel/GM platform.. Or a BMW on a BMW platform designed in Germany? The answer is simple for me
