I mourn the loss of these land yachts. Last of the body-on frame, RWD, V8 American sedans, truly throwbacks to 1960s and 1970s full size cars.(in no small part due to the chassis dating back to the late 1970s.) Sure they handled like mush, but they were never meant to drive like a sports car. They were reliable, no-nonsense, and as long as you changed the fluids, they gave you no trouble. They glided and caressed you, a moving sofa with a v8 rumble.All bumps were isolated from the driver. The last "true" American car, built like they had always been.

One dream of mine is driving a Lincoln Town Car on Route 66. As Sally put it in the film "Cars": "Forty years ago that interstate didn't exist. Back then, cars came across the country a whole different way. The road didn't cut through the land like that interstate; it moved with the land. It rose, it fell, it curved. Cars didn't drive on the road to make great time; they drove on it to have a great time."

@Browningate11 жыл бұрын
The TownCar is interesting because even in the 1990s, it still kept its dated 1980s look until the redesign in 1998, which ended up being ahead of its time (it's like they totally skipped from the 1980s straight into the 2000s) that it needed relatively little adjustment over the years. That was one design that had fantastic shelf life. TownCar will always be a timeless winner.
@42luke936 жыл бұрын

The towncar along with the crown Vic and grand marquis were based off the panther platform which lasted from the late 1970's all the way to 2011 so they were literally built like old school cars body on frame rear wheel drive and a V8. That's how it kept that ride and feel that everybody loves. I believe in 2012 new federal regulations on stability control is what finally made these cars to he discontinued

Before you all laugh at the Town Car’s relatively low power output considering its 4.6 litre engine displacement and make some comment about your lawnmower having more power per litre, what you need to understand is this: the Town Car isn’t about speed or horsepower or quarter mile times. It’s all about delivering a smooth, comfortable and luxurious ride at any speed, and the Town Car delivers this in spades. It’s because of this that I like to think of the Town Car as a ‘poor man’s Mercedes S-Class’. This also applies to the Town Car’s sister cars, the Ford Crown Victoria & the Mercury Grand Marquis. Not only that, but because of the body-on-frame design and the fact that the Town Car’s V8 engine is massively under-stressed, the Town Car, along with its aforementioned Ford and Mercury sister cars, is notoriously reliable - one Town Car featured on Scotty Kilmer’s ‘Show-Off Sunday’ series on KZbin had done 486,000 miles (486,609 miles, to be exact) at the time of filming.

Yet, if you turn off traction control, you'll be burning rubber all day long and watch her fly around 7-8 seconds 0-60! People think its slow despite having adequate acceleration because it does so pretty quietly and it doesnt feel so fast because it's a 4300lbs+ car! This car competes with Lexus Ls, Mercedes S Class, Audi, BMW 7 Series, Infiniti Q45, and Cadillac, but Ford was not serious about competing with luxury European cars. When we talk about a huge rear-wheel-drive V8 car for the year 2011, we find that the 4.6L 2V V8 engine with 239 horsepower is weak and out of line. With the rest of modern cars and a primitive 4-speed transmission !!! Even the 1990 Lexus ls400 with a 4.0 engine had 250 hp and the 2011 Lincoln Town Car had 239 hp. Remember that the V6 engines in this year are much more powerful than them, even the 1990 Lexus ls400 has higher safety, better specifications and a much better suspension system. I wonder what the engineers were thinking when they continued from 1992 until The year 2011 with the same engine and transmission on this car, and then they stop manufacturing it under the pretext that its sales are few and the suspension system is fixed. Of course, its sales will decrease because they have continued with the same Panther platform for more thanWithout any updates!!!

Can you explain why the 2000 Lincoln Continental has a 4.6 V8 engine with 275 HP while its big brother Lincoln Town Car only has an engine with 220 HP???? Why is the 1998 Ford Taurus with a 3.4L V8 engine rated at 235 hp while the Ford Victoria and Mercury Marquis have a 4.6 V8 engine with only 215 hp!!! Given that the Panther is America's largest V8 sedan, why would Ford's compact cars have more power and speed than the Panther platform! It is inconceivable that the Continental has more power than the Town Car than it is inconceivable that the Ford Ranger, Focus, Taurus, Escape, Expedition, Cougar, Edge, Scout and Arion have more speed than the Panther platform, which is the largest luxury car in America In terms of speed, I compare the Town Car to its competitors in luxury cars, Lexus LS, Mercedes S-Class, BMW, Audi and Infiniti. Does it make sense that the Ford Ranger has a higher speed than the large yachts Crown Vic, Marquis and Town Car?

@extremepsychogamer If you've noticed this car had less than 100 miles on the odometer. I'm pretty sure those miles were from test drives from potential owners or from moving the car several times inside the parking lot. That's why the mileage is only 8.5mpg. Those aren't normal driving conditions. once it has its owner it'll hit the streets and highways so the mileage will raise higher. Just look at any car on a dealership, the mpg will be low for that same reason. These usually get like 17mpg

It's sad that these kinds of cars died off. I'm not a big fan of leather and tacky wood trim, but I love the feeling is an under worked V8 pushing you down the road. My folks just bought a Buick Enclave and that might be the closest in feel to the classic sedan in terms of ride, but just isn't the same. As much as I like the nostalgia of the Panther platform cars, they just weren't competitive, even 10 years ago, when compared to the likes of Lexus, Mercedes, and BMW. Lincoln needs to have its own bespoke platform to elevate itself from a purveyor of overpriced, badge-engineered Fords. They are doing a slightly better job of stylistically elevating the brand with the likes of the MKC, MKX, and the upcoming Continental, but they need a RWD based platform for both a sedan and a crossover. Give it a long hood with tons of space between the front fender and door opening. That's fine if the 3.5 ecoboost is used, but we all really want the Coyote lurking under hood.
@hakeemsd70m7 жыл бұрын
Aaron Fink The Panthers were never meant to be competitive to cramped, overpriced, and plasticky German sports sedans. Just big, smooth, RWD full size body on frame V8 powdered luxobarges, and the Panther cars never tried to be anything else other than the classic American luxury car. That's right..I'm squinting at you, Cadillac CT6.
@BeingMe237 жыл бұрын
Sadly enough Lincoln is in full blown panic survive mode at this point. The 2017 Lincoln Continental is a great car with update styling. Like if you buy the top trim level. The dealer will come get your car at work or home take it in for service and leave you with a loaner. Then bring you back your car from the shop. Okay what brand does that?! Go ahead I will wait? 🤔

+JukiReviews Last year they made it... (1998-2011) with a slight update of grill in 2003
@242HP8 жыл бұрын
It was more than a slight update of the grille in 2003; they redesigned the headlights and squared off the front and rear bumpers as well. The trunk lid was also squared off, instead of the previous sloping one. Personally, I never really liked the '98-'02 Town Car that much.
@MacFreaks8 жыл бұрын
Problem with the '98-'02 model was that it looked like a gussied up Mark VIII, so it looked outdated the moment it left the factory. The '03s were much nicer, although they still had a faint whiff of grandpa about them.
@242HP8 жыл бұрын
A faint whiff of Grandpa about them? LOL, I'm in my mid-fifties now and I've got a Town Car of this gen, and I've got a friend who tells me that I shouldn't be driving it because it's an "old man's car".
@MacFreaks8 жыл бұрын
That's pretty much the only problem with these cars: old people seem to like them. A lot. They have the same appeal as the Cadillac DTS, basically. Large, soft seats, slightly ye-olde-timey styling.
