So I decided to go to Saarland and find out about what the other places in Germany think of Saarland, about the jokes about Saarland the Alabama of Germany. But I find out that maybe 1/40 know what Saarland is!. I never though I would witness two German arguing what Saarland. some even said is it in Disney Land.

Saarland is not the Alabama of Germany. Its the shire of Germany. -most germans weren't there, some even dont know were it is. -things that happen in saarland normaly doesn't have much influence to the rest of Germany - we got 7 meals a day just like hobbits ;)

Some politicians like Kramp-Karrenbauer come from there, so the small Saarland already has a relatively large influence on Germany

A tip: In Germany you don't say "deutsche Leute", you will sound more like a native if you just say "deutsche". For instance, you also do not say "Saarländer Leute" or sth. like that, only ,,Saarländer" :)

It's sad that many in Deutschland don't know of Saarland even though it has been a part of the country since 1956. I'm certain they know even less about Alabama.

As a person who has ancestors from sarrland, and graduated from high schoool in Alabama, I have to say I expected a bit more from this than I got. I was hoping for more than just a clip of rigatoni but I will still be glad to go and try it.

Saarland being the Alabama of D is quite a strange analogy in many ways. The food in Alabama is quite awful whereas the Saarland food culture is among the best in D. Unlike the neighbouring Pfalz, the Saarland has been much less of a rural than an heavily industrialized region for 200 years because of the coal and steel industry whose disappearance is currently creating economic issues. Although the French border is close, the bordering French region of Lorraine is historically German-speaking which makes the border, in European times, mostly a non-issue. There is a tramway from Saarbrücken over the border to Sarreguemines.

Historisch gesehen war Saarland immer Deutsch, Napoleon hat es bzw. mehrer Gebiete um den Rhein erobert, wir haben sie aber uns wieder fast vollständig zurück geholt.

My matrilineal grandmother four generations back was from Heckendalheim outside and just east of Saarbrücken, 1890s. Through series of razing and rebuilding over the decades, I don't think anything exists in that village from back then still.

the small Pizza place at 7:02 is amazing. Iused to live there just around the corner, and the place was open until late at night, so everytime we were out drinking, we had to get our drunk-pizzas. Weirdly, they also sell Döner made of pork hahaha

In Saarland there are basicly two languages. The one based on Rhenish Franconian languages the other on Moselle Franconian langueages. In my hometown for exaple we dont say gemoje. We say moin, like in luxemburg

As an American, I am insulted that you would call my ancestors homeland "alabama". No, i looked up my lineage, no interbreeding happened. One was named everhardus. I like that. If you look at demographics, you will notice that "Alabama" has a majority black population. It quite possibly has the most blacks per capita in the nation. No, one of my ancestors was killed in the civil war on the side of the north. He enlisted in Ohio. Alot of germans from this area of germany ended up in the northwest territories. Ohio, michigan, etc. My mothers mother, my grandmother, came from the Munich area. She married my grandfather who was in germany working for the usa gov as a truck driver. He crashed his truck and was badly injured. He was moved to america. My grandmother did not leave to come to the usa until 1948. They had a large family here in the usa. I was told that two of my uncles where drafted in the war, and disappeared on the eastern front. Its funny, on the other side of the family i have ancestors that lived in saarland. not far from where her family was. I would like to visit sometime.

I was born in that region. I really disliked it. People there are weird. I believe its because there is nothing really going on there and there are seemingly barely any young people who havent moved to a more vibrant place as soon as they can. I sometimes felt like all houses were empty, or only old people lived over there, because you barely see anyone young on the street ever, except in the few bigger cities of course.overall it always made me feel dead inside, like Im the last young person alive. Its one of the cheapest regions for a reason. I always felt way better in any other place I lived.
