The third rule is that doc will go through hell and back to change rules one and two. This is why we loved our combat medics (doc).

4th Rule never shoot in docs general direction in front of the machine gunner. Because I or one of my fellow Grunts with a machine gun will ordain you in lead. We'll make you holier than the pope. If somehow your the bad guy that's smart enough to take cover but also somehow dumb enough to shoot at doc. Well the smaller machine gun is called the SAW he's going to try to cut through whatever your hiding behind. If he can't your getting flanked. If that's not an option well there's only so many 7.62x51mm AP whatever your behind can take fir you. And I'm going to find out how many. Yes my assigned weapon for most of my career has been either the M249 SAW or the M240. Either way that cover isn't saving anyone who tries to take out doc.

Good because war isn't ment to be some kind of game. This also illustrates the reason for the saying.. “Beware of an old man in a profession where men usually die young. " The reason being,that .. Old warriors did not get old by accident; they got old by being wise, having the right knowledge, and being tough. Never underestimate an old man who has grown up in a rough profession or a rough environment.

Isn't the Battle of the Somme where Tolkien got trench fever and basically had to sit out the rest of the war in the hospital? I knew the battle was rough, but *wow,* it's amazing he *survived.* Come to think of it, he was the only one of his friends going into the war who *did.* Damn.

Tolkien might not have wrote these words, but Bernard Hill’s Quote: “No Parent should have to Bury their Child.” Is very fitting for this song and the war. Even if Tolkien didn’t knowingly be influenced by the war, some of it came through. The Dead Marshes are the closest to the actual battlefields. Being covered in corpses and water covering men who were not blown up. Making it look like they were just sleeping as they slowly rotted away under the water.
@brigidtheirish

@@Davidofthelost I think he was aware, at least on some level, of the influence the war had on the themes and imagery he used. He disliked (strongly) *allegory,* not metaphor, after all. And the dead marshes were *creepy as HELL* long before I knew what they were based on.

This song... man these lyrics and harrowing words gives me chills like no other. I completely understand what you are saying at the end of the video. My great grandfathers, grandfathers, and cousins served in all branches of the us military. The one family military story that sticks to me most is about my step-uncle's father, who served during the height of the Vietnam War. He was a military cook, served food and such, and he did see combat from what little I know. Yet it wasn't combat, fighting, or taking human life that... Broke him to say. It was the massive loss of human life and his inability to cope with such loss. Everyday he would work, serve food and chat with fellow soldiers. Everyday more names, faces, fathers, friends, and above all, good men would never return. Few made it out of service, most of them left crippled or scared for life, many more of them lay dead. War is Hell. Surviving after war is a whole new hell of itself. Honestly, it is no wonder that drugs in the military were so rampant during those times, the war was going FUBAR and these soldiers had no support or mental help of any kind. From what I know, he never talked about the war, only suffered from it. Severe PTSD, Alcoholism, a heroin addiction, and anger problems led to him getting killed by the cops. He died as another statistic while my mother was still a young child and her step brother a toddler. So yeah, that's what I am able to say.

The soldier pulling himself out of the mud, at first I thought he was a member of "The Smoking Snakes" (Força Expedicionária Brasileira, FEB, nicknamed Cobras Fumantes), but doing some more research with the patch on his shoulder as well as his helmet, that's Sgt Henry Johnson of the 15th New York National Guard Regiment, aka "The Harlem Hellfighters". Medal of Honor recipient and recipient of French Croix de Guerre avec Palme, France's highest award for valor. The Medal of Honor was awarded to him in 2015. Sgt. Henry Johnson is "one of the five bravest American soldiers in the war." Theodore Roosevelt Jr. in his book "Rank and File: True Stories of the Great War" The Asian soldier with the cocked-hat, that's a Nepalese Gurka named Havildar Gurung (per the credits) who earn the Victoria Cross in the Burma campaign off WWII. Sgt Awal Nur, who did a secret mission over the Himalaya, Lt. Audie Murphy, Sgt. Alvin York, just to name a few. I also notice a soldier with the Croix Lorraine on what looks like a French flag arm band, meaning he was a member of the 'Forces françaises libres' forces in WWII. Doing some reading I found out that a large number of French colonial troops from territories such as Chad had joined with the 'Forces françaises libres'. Damn, Sabaton REALLY does their research! I suspect that soldier is Lt Comba, but I can't find anything on him. As I've been working my way through the names listed in the credits and found another one: Private George Stringer, Manchester, Awarded the Victoria Cross at the Battle of Es Sinn in Mesopotamia. Capt. Dobson, 1st Canadian Infantry Battalion, Killed on 9 July 1916 in Flanders.

"Psychologically we couldn't handle it today" you could argue that many those who fought in WW1 couldn't handle it psychologically either considering the discovery and prevalence of shellshock and the fact that many veterans of WW1 became stounch pacifists in the wars aftermath or as a result of the conflicts that stemmed from the emendate aftermath. even those that handled it better ofte retreated in to older forms like Tolkien who's poetry mimicked or retold story's of Norse and Arthurian legend and whos fiction had theams of conflict between unambiguous good vs unambiguousevil or ermst Junger who in the emidate post war period valorized his combat experiences in "Storm of steel, "Fire and Blood" "War as Inner Esperance" and "Copes 123" etc
