The album Carolus Rex is based on what can be considered greatest expanse and glory days of Sweden from days of Gustav II Adolf (early 1600s) to death of Charles XII (1718) and it is amazing album. Great thing it works both in Swedish and English which for either poetry or songs (that also can be considered form of poetry) is a feat. To send the same message and keep the rhymes of the lyrics and the tempo of music.
@seancarter95446 жыл бұрын
A lot of the songs tell the same subject matter, for example, Lifetime of War is about the 30 Years' War, and the English version tells about the general pain and suffering it caused to everyone, but En Livstid i Krig tells a more personal story about a specific person's experience. Really cool reading the translations of the Swedish lyrics and seeing how they say completely different things, almost like they are different songs in themselves.

Carolus Rex is in fact a concept album, retelling swedish history up to the fall of the swedish empire. Carolus Rex is Charles XII from Sweden (and funnily enough, he was also the leader of the House of Palatinate-Zweibrücken, Zweibrücken being a little german town near were I live in the southwest of Germany). And yes, this I consider the very best song they ever made.

I just turned 66 years old and recently discovered Sabaton. Where have these guys been all my life? Good Lord, they kick some serious ass... and my ass is very serious, indeed. This song, Carolus Rex is, in my humble opinion, their Magnum Opus as it is pure orgasmic rock. Melody, power, harmonies out the ass, soaring vocals married to phenomenal orchestration and bitching guitar work. If these guys were around doing this in the 1980’s, they’d own the damn world. What we have here is unadulterated and unapologetic toxic masculinity, with no soy-boys or feminists allowed… Thank God!

Sorry for the spelling errors got a new keyboard, and my sight is going to crap, I think it may be due to my gallbladder but I'll have to wait 2 more weeks to get that checked out. whatever you guys are awesome!

Fact for this video: The show was recorded in their hometown of Falun. When they were mixing the sound in the studio, the mastertapes were lost cause the studio burned down and they only had one track with all of the sound from audience and instruments. Therefore they decided to film and rerecord the whole thing in the studio. Sabaton were completely open and honest over that they had to "cheat" as they're telling the fact as a part of a minidocumentary of the show/festival. Another clip from the rerecording: kzbin.info/www/bejne/g2KTnYBqjbGpgdk

English Lyrics: All embrace me It's my time to rule at last 15 years have I been waiting to sit upon my throne No allegiance I will swear no oath Crowned by God, not by the church, as my power is divine. They thought I was too young to rule the land, Just as they failed to understand, born to rule My time has come I was chosen by heaven Say my name when you pray to the skies. See Carolus rise. With the lord my protector, make them bow to my will. To the skies, see Carolus rise! To the skies, see Carolus rise! Proved in battle, led my men to victory. No man, alive or dead, commands me. I answer to the lord. Hear my orders, question me and die! What I say was said in heaven and so it shall be done. They know I was destined to rule alone, all for myself I have claimed the throne. Born to rule. My time is now! I was chosen by heaven. Say my name when you pray to the skies. See Carolus rise. With the lord my protector, make them bow to my will. To the skies, see Carolus rise! To the skies, see Carolus rise! All that’s thine, shall be mine there’s no stopping me All over Europe my rule shall be questioned by none. All I see, give to me, that is my decree My will be done. They thought I was too young to rule the land, just as they failed to understand, born to rule. My time is now. I was chosen by heaven. Say my name when you pray to the skies. See Carolus rise. To the skies... With the lord my protector, make them bow to my will. To the skies... see Carolus rise. To the skies... see Carolus rise.

A&P-REACTS as a swedish person who understands the lyrics i can tell you that it's really epic in both languages. Carolus rex or Karl XII wich was his real name Inherrited the throne at the age of 15 on the 5th april 1697. His reign ended when he was shot in the head in fredrikshald norway. He was verry lucky and had the best army in the world at the time and after the battle of narva when the Swedish army was outnumbered 30 000 to 10 000 and won with only about 600 casualties the Swedish army scared the rest of the world even moore. The swedish soliders were called caroleans or karoliner in swedish. They were verry religious and believed that if they died or survived it was gods will so they were not scared when they slowly marched into enemy fire. And since they showed no fear they easily broke the enemy lines and they were ordered not to fire their muskets untill they could see the white of their enemies eyes. There is a sabaton song about them called the caroleans prayer. Karolinens bön in swedish. Im sorry this comment is so long but there is so much to talk about.

If you’re gonna listen to this album, listen to it in order. The songs are in chronological order, starting in 1611 with Gustav II Adolf’s (Gustavus Adolphus) ascension to the throne and his participation in the Thirty Years’ War up until his death, and through the rule of Charles XII (Carolus Rex) and the Great Northern War, up until his death.

Carolus Rex is a Latin name for King Charles XII of Sweden, known as a "warrior king" who started the the Great Northern War (1700-1721) against Tsardom of Russia and it's leader Tsar Peter the Great. Unfortunately for Sweden they lost and that was end of Empire of Sweden.
@HARVEE646 жыл бұрын
Ilpo H Charles XII didn’t start the Great Northern War. Not in the slightest. He was still a teenager so Russia, Denmark-Norway and Saxony-Poland-Lithuania thought he would be an easy target, and all attacked together. He only retaliated in defence, but was unwilling to accept anything but absolute defeat from the enemy, which is why he lost the war.
@ilpoh12376 жыл бұрын
Thank you for this. I need to read more those history books :D

You should. Charles XII was one of the most badass men that ever lived.
@bjoardar6 жыл бұрын
He turned to Denmark first, forcing them to pull out of the alliance. Then he turned to Poland-Lithuania and defeated them soundly, leaving only Russia. Tsar Peter send messengers to Charles XII for a cease fire since Russia had lost her allies, but Charles refused (probably riding high on his success and not completely unjustified arrogance). He was wounded on his campaign into Russia and was carried on a stretcher, but still at the front line with his soldiers that was his style of fighting. During one of the battles, all 4 carriers of his stretcher died, but Charles lived. He was indeed a warrior king. At Poltava, his wound forced him to hand over command how ever, and unfortunately the two generals left in command had little love for each other, resulting in little to no communication between their regiments and thus tactical incompetence. Under Charles XII direct command, he never lost a battle. Never. He was undefeated until he died. Had the Swedes won at Poltava that day, the Russians would not have been able to stop the Swedes and would most likely have lost large areas, if not the war itself, because Russia too had put everything on the line with the army they had amassed to face Charles at Poltava. Loosing that army would have crippled Russia completely, but they won, and instead it was the Swedes that where crippled, loosing 1 / 3 of the kingdom as a result (what is today known as Finland. Yeh ... the Finns still hate Swedes for that :P ).

Great that you liked the Swedish version, a lot of flavor is lost in the translation to English and if you want to know more about Swedens history you should look for Ultima Thule a vikingpunk band who tells the same stories in their album and song with the same name.
