Judging how much Sabaton invests in their music videos, they probably flooded part of Belgium for this....

One of the most interesting things about this song is the line "See a king and a soldier, fighting shoulder to shoulder". The king of Belgium at the time wasn't some backline leader...He fought on the front with his men. Absolute legend.

Yesterday we took an English exam in school and you could write about something that is important in your life (film/music/gaming). I chose music and wrote about sabaton and the importance of learning from our history so things like what’s going on now don’t happen.

Heard Joakim say that they dont touch subjects that dont have historical facts. They did once with Panzar Battalion that was about dessert storm campaign and there was some issues with that, the story had two sides so to speak. If i remember right, was some time ago i heard it.

The Race to the Sea is probably one of my favorite parts of WW1 to read about because like you said it was a significant moment in how the war developed. Another reason it was such a significant part of the war was due to what initiated the race to the sea. At the outbreak of the war the Germans were basically unmatched until in a shocking blow the French 6th army attacked the flank of the German 1st army at the first battle of the Marne that would eventually lead to the first major Allied victory in the West. The French breakthrough risked encirclement for the German 1st army and their now cutoff 2nd army, forcing them to retreat to the Aisne River. In the following days the Race to the Sea would initiate as the opposing armies both push north in an attempt to get around the other. A series of battles over the next month would eventually lead to the Battle of Yser where as you said, the dam locks were opened to flood the region to prevent a German breakthrough. What remained of the Belgian army would hold that last piece of Belgium until 1918 and the neighboring city of Ypres would see some of the most ferocious combat of the war.

I heard that the German soldiers wouldn't shoot the Belgian King because he was the Kaiser's cousin. He was one of the only royals to actually fight on the battlefields with his soldiers.

Victor Emmanuel III of Italy was also seen on the frontlines, he even had a picture with King Albert. Kaiser Karl of Austro-Hungary also served before becoming king.

@@ntfdbrs2562 One more I know. Midshipman Albert Mountbatten, aged 16, was training to be a naval officer and was spending time at sea on HMS Collingwood in 1916. Which happened to coincide with the Battle of Jutland. Some 20 years later he was crowned King George VI.

Haha, Fun to see Americans being so convinced and be so wrong. :D The English translation is indeed 'Yser' but in Flemish (belgian version of Dutch), it is Ijzer. Besides that, it's pronounced very different and non-dutch/non-flemish speaking people will get it wrong. :) (no offense, it's not easy for non-native speaking people. ;) ) It is not a town, it's a river flowing through villages. ;) But still, despite the fact that WWI was so horrible, Belgium does have a rich history in that period with a lot of these stories. ;) Also mentioned quited often in Sabaton songs. One of my favorites: Resist and Bite

Thanks for the great reaction. Just one thing: Yser is a river near the Belgium-France border, not a town.

There is honestly something seriously wrong with how we teach some subjects such as Math and History. The expected rote memorization of dates or number sequences saps all joy from subjects that should be interesting and explorative. Yet time and again, History is viewed with scorn because "it's boring" and honestly the stories of history should never be that, they're our stories, for good or ill they're things that we as a species have done, to ourselves, each other, and the environment. Sabaton are teachers, in the old sense, they're bards to tell us our history. And while those of us who know already what their subjects are about find the experience even more colorful, if even one person who is ignorant of the subject finds something new because of a great song, then I think Sabaton has done their job. As for current events, I hope our brothers and sisters in metal on all sides find the peace and succor they require.

'Yser' is not a town, it's a river... (Not to be mixed up with the nearby town called 'Ypres') Ha! GOTCHA this time! 😉 P.S. The Battle of the Yser was fought between Belgian and German troops, while The Battle of Ypres (among which also Passchendaele) was mainly fought between British, French and German troops (only a minority of Belgian troops). You're welcome! 😌

As a Swede I really dislike Putin and stand by Ukraine and Finland but the Russians in general is innocent, even the ones believing in the lies he spred on his tv-channel. Sabaton has sad that they only write about history that has truly been confirmed in an objective way. Like everything about this video.

you should react to Daria & Sergzen... As a European we the Greek people are divided into 2 stupid camps( as always ) , the communist party being USSR idealists support the current president of Russian Federation and try to justify his ambition for the last 2 weeks and the government party who are the brainchild of the guy that put Greece into NATO in the 1960s and 70s try to support Ukraine without invoking the wrath of that guy because of historical and religious ties while having a sizeable minority of Greek citizens living in Odessa and Marioupol respectively.

And on the Finland thing, I'm sure you have learned more since March but they have never been "alone." Not only do they have what can be summed up as a defensive pacts with the other Scandinavian countries (Nordic Defense Cooperation) but they are a member of the EU's defensive pact (Common Security and Defense) as well. Of course, now they have guarantees of defense from the vast majority of the West and NATO itself until their application is accepted and they become a full member, the sooner Hungary (Orban) and Turkey (Erdogan) get their heads out of their asses the better.
