One of history’s most renowned last stands, the Battle of Rorke’s Drift took place in 1879 during the Anglo-Zulu war. For two days, 150 British and colonial soldiers defended the Rorke’s Drift mission station in South Africa while being attacked by 4,000 Zulu warriors. That day the British learned to not underestimate the bravery and the capability of the Zulus. While simultaneously the Zulus learned to not underestimate the discipline of the British. Honestly one of history’s most successful military stands. A true example when discipline was greater than numbers. And to think that earlier on that same morning miles away, the British Empire was dealt it’s most humiliating defeat at the hands of an indigenous enemy. Despite being outnumbered 15 to 1, the British at Rorkes Drift lost only 17 men when compared to hundreds of Zulu casualties. That day in the year of 1879, both sides were humbled and learned to not underestimate one another.

I am a big fan of history. I was a member of my school's History club, asked to join by the history teacher as she'd seen how much I devoured our textbook and actually checked the bibliography of it and went to find those books. I was the sponsor of it as a senior, and introduced the club to the entire school trying to get members. I wish Sabaton had been around, and the internet, so I could have played this to hook them and possibly overfill the club room. I could see our teacher using this music to get us thinking to get us digging into stuff. She showed movies in the club and we talked about what they did not get right, and what they did. We found out the small stories that are hidden in the bigger ones, and dug into the vast piles of data. We learned how to research history, and we loved it. So I know quite well that she'd have bought the albums and played them for us. And ignored the complaints about the other clubs who met on that hall because... history!! Oh Sabaton, what a gift you are to those of us who love history, for you bring so many more to share our love for the tapestry of stories. Thank you for your music.

41 Years before Rorke's Drift on 16 December 1838, the battle of Blood River was fought between 400 dutch pioneer farmers armed with muskets against 10,000 - 15,000 Zulu warriors. The Dutch pioneers won the battle in a modern miracle after praying to God to grant them victory. This victory is part of the military heritage of today's Afrikaner / Boers of South Africa who later fought against the British Empire in 2 wars for independence in 1880 and 1899

Fun fact: After the battle of Rorkes Drift, 11 Victoria Crosses were awarded, the highest amount ever given after a single battle. One Victoria Cross was awarded to a Corporal Friedrich Schiess, who claimed he was from South Africa. However his actual name was Christian Ferdinand Schiess and he was actually a Swiss mercenary using a false identity to fight in foreign wars. To my knowledge he was the only foreigner to ever be awarded the Victoria Cross.

11 Victoria Crosses awarded to a single regiment. Then in 2004, our government at the time decided to scrap that regiment with numerous others by mixing them with others, much to the annoyance to those serving in said regiments

There are quite a number of non-British/Imperial/Nepali nationals who have been awarded the VC while fighting in or alongside the British military. Four Americans, a Belgian, three Danes, two Germans, a Swede, Ferdinand Schiess (Swiss) and a Ukrainian.

See their warrior’s pennants streaming To this battlefield Men of Harlech, stand ye steady It cannot ever be said ye For the battle were not ready Welshmen never yield! From the hills rebounding Let this song be sounding Summon all at Cambria’s call The mighty force surrounding Men of Harlech, onto glory!
