The tank that Sabaton is driving at around 3:40 (their video) is a concept-tank that never existed outside of the game "World of Tanks" it is a Centurion (or Strv81) turret mounted on top of a "kranvagn" chassi.

Just to clarify the Leopards that the song is talking about is most likely the Leopard 1s/2s, these cats are germany's MBT post WW2 with the leo 1 + future variants entered service in the 60s while the Leo 2 + future variants in 79 (ofcourse there was a tank that was named leopard in ww2, the VK 1602, but it was a prototype that was never produce) The casemate tanks your talking about are the jagdpanzers and panzerjägers hardly any of them have animal names and the thing about allied tanks aiming for the turret ring, from what ive heard its mostly because on Panzer V aka panthers, the curved mantlet created a shot trap which was later fixed with the G variant

Sir Winston Churchill was behind the invention of the tank! He proposed the idea of "landships" being used to break the deadlock at the Battle of the Somme and the plan was approved! It was a complete secret, everyone involved was sworn to utmost secrecy and any questions from outside quartermasters or officers asking where all the resources being sent to this project were going were told they were for "water tanks."

14:05 What you are referring to here are the "Jagdpanzer" like Ferdinand, Jagdpanther, etc. The Leopard I, however, came over 20 years later (about the same time as the Chieftain) and was conceptualized from the get-go as a main battle tank. It would seem you got a bit confused about the names. There was a Jagdpanzer with an animal-name, that much is true. However, it was not Leopard. It was Elephant - basically an upgraded version of the Ferdinand.

The tank you saw Sabaton in was actually a Swedish idea from the Cold War mating the hull of their Kranvagn heavy with the turret of a Centurion Mk10. The idea was dropped after a while in favor of just purchasing the Centurion Mk10s themselves as a cheaper alternative. Kranvagn was a pretty interesting project and I'm kinda sad it never got fully completed though they still found use in it testing equipment that led to the Strv103. You can still find pics of its hull sitting in the Swedish Arsenalen Museum. Great reaction btw

There was one time in either The Somme or Ypre that had a tank assault. A mark 4 crewed by a brit crew was moored close to a German trench line and shot at with the hvy MG's and rifle fire for at least an hour. When that enemy line retreated and the crew could get out and inspect their stuck AV they saw that they were shot so much Lead had transferred from all the strikes and PAINTED THE TANKS SIDES BRIGHT SHINY CHROME METAL. They could run a finger over it and pull away the layers of melted lead. WW1 was insane. So were those tanks.

There was a documentary I was watching on the Canadian armour division in Italy on the road to Rome. They discovered the panthers for the first time. And they were still in the early Sherman tanks. They found out that the weld spots were week on the panthers armour because there was a magnesium or manganese shortage. Lots of factories were bombed. So the Sherman tankers would target the weld spots on the front and top of the panther. Many of them would catch fire. Very cool story, but unfortunately they all got a bad nickname cause they weren’t apart of the D day invasion. The Italian campaign was basically the big test run for it.

Couple of errors stated at approximately 10:40. 1. The main workhorse of the German Army was the PzKpw IV which is equivalently armed and armored to the Sherman. The Sherman would not have issues dealing with these tanks. It is only the Panther and Tiger tanks that the Shermans had difficulty dealing with. 2. The US had the 76 mm armed Shermans available in time for D-Day. The US Armored Divisions preferred the 75 mm gun to the 76 mm gun because the 75 mm had superior anti-infantry capabilities and did not change prior to D-Day for this reason.

I have to object on several points you made here about the Sherman. It was not lightly armored at all, especially not for it's time and at the time it was introduced to the battlefield at any respectable range any gun of the time would more often bounce than penetrate. The standard base model M4 Sherman armor was about 2in (51mm) of frontal armor with a very pronounced slope this effectively increased it to about 3.6in (91.4mm). This was enough to bounce both variations of the German 75mm gun those being the Short 75mm and Long 75mm found on the Panzer 4 with some degree of reliability. For reference the Tiger's frontal armor was only 4in (102mm) effective yet it has this reputation of being an impenetrable beast of steel. This is only because of accounts of the, known to be outdated, 75mm armed Shermans of the time bouncing rounds off the front of it. This is completely ignoring the reason the US started to arm Shermans with the Long 76 that was very capable of frontally penetrating most German tanks at up to 1,000 yards. The variants of the Sherman that carried the Long 76 also received slightly increased frontal armor protection. This is the reason why that post war studies found that a fight against the average 76mm Sherman and almost any German tank of the time the tank that one was almost always the one that fired and hit first. This largely favored the Germans as they were on the defensive and as such the Shermans had to come to them and yet the Long 76 still did it's job. So well and so frequently in fact the German tankers developed something akin to Allied "Tigerphobia" (the condition of obsessively fixating on the destruction of any an all Tigers first and consistently misidentifying enemy tanks as Tigers) for the Long 76 Shermans (most of the Shermans that carried the Long 76 were the M4A3E8 often referred to as "E8s" or "Easy 8s". However the M4A1 and M4A2 could both carry 76s as well.) However the old, by 1944, 75mm gun was still capable of knocking out any German tank it met at respectable ranges (Panzers 2s, 3s, and 4s were vulnerable to penetration from it at any range they had a chance to hurt the Sherman) UNLESS it was what was referred to as a "Big Cat" I.E the Panthers (standard 75mm gun incapable of frontal penetration, possible side penetration at medium to long range, capable of rear penetration at almost any range), Tiger 1s (standard 75mm gun capable of frontal penetration only at ranges closer than 300 yards, side penetration possible at medium to long range, rear penetration possible at nearly all ranges). Tiger 2s (standard 75mm gun incapable of frontal penetration, capable of side penetration at close to medium ranges, rear armor penetration possible at nearly all ranges). Also the Shermans being called a "Tinder Box" or "Ronson" is a post war myth propagated by that horribly inaccurate book "Death Traps" Shermans had a famously low burn rate in WW2 due to a Wet Ammo Stowage system. In fact if I remember correctly out of all the tanks of WW2 it had one of the single lowest burn rates (the rate at which if hit the tank would ignite in fire).

Great video and great reaction as always. Watched the video just after the premier (missed it by "that much"). Really like that Wargaming is doing this with Sabaton and I'm hoping to see a crossover with a certain other person (mentioned in my second reply). On the Sherman, you're mixing up the M4 Sherman Medium Tank and the earlier M3 Grant Light Tank. The Shermans had more than sufficient protection from all but the largest German tank cannon. It was, for much of the war, the same as during your time in service - the first to shoot was the first to kill. The Sherman's advantage was that it had a stabilized gun, something the Germans didn't have, allowing to to fire on the move effectively. Just FYI, the M3 Gun Motor Carriage had an earlier version of the same 75mm Cannon of the Sherman and was more than capable of penetrating the armor of even the Panthers and Tigers, with an M3 GMC having been credited with the first kill of a Tiger in the field. @12:40 the Chieftain and Centurion are the British Post-War Main Battle Tanks (Centurion coming online right at the end of WWII followed by Chieftain) and are normal MBTs with normal turrets. You're mixing up very different tanks. The battle you are seeing has nothing to do with the lyrics. It is depicting an ISU-152 (Soviet Tank Destroyer) against a German Panzerjager of some mark that I can't make out for certain.

I heard an anecdote from a G.I. in Normandy who saw a fellow unit member walk up to an idling Sherman and hit it hard with a hammer. He saw the crew scramble out in seconds to all the surrounding G.I.'s laughter. If I recall correct there was witness bias by the author of that book, because he was part of a detail cleaning out shot out shermans for repair and redeployment if not trashed to scrap. It's the same thing that witness bias messed with US air army investigation in determining what the weak points in the B-17 and other bombers were by measuring flak, fighter cannon shell, and bullet strikes on the returned planes. Made them think "Oh, if we armor up these parts we'll fix the attrition rate." No, causation is not correlation in the wrong context. They couldn't NTSB like investigate downed planes over europe and only crashes in England or they'd actually see the sensitive strike zones\weak points. I'll end with Chieftain Nick Moran's better tactic saying. "The tank that can see the enemy and fire first generally survives the engagement and kills the enemy tank." Can't argue with that.

It would be great if you reacted to them on your channel! Also, if you like WWII tanks, you MUST check out the anime Girls und Panzer. It is about an alternate world where high schools are on MASSIVE "aircraft" carriers. Basically a floating city. The home ship of the school the show follows, Oarai, has a population of 30,000. Different schools have different culture based on a nation in WWII. For example. Kuromorimene is based on Germany, Sanders is America, Pravda is the Soviet Union, Jakatsota is Finland, Chi Ha Tan is Japan, Anzio is Italy, and St. Glorianna is England. With the exception of Clara from Pravda who is Russian, all of the girls are Japanese, though they do not look like it. Also, the girls from St. Glorianna all are driking tea in their tanks, and are in fact named after tea! Darjaling, Rosehip, Vanilla, Cranberry, Assam, Orange Penoke. In this alternate universe, they have an all girls sport called tankery. It is girls fighting in WWI and WWII tanks. The show is filled with historical references. And the crazy tank battles are awesome! The hour long battle in Girls und Panzer der Film, is just a joy to watch.

The Sherman M4 Sherman was light and fast and Carried a Low Velocity 75mm Gun which Was Able to to Penetrate early Panzers and Early versions of the Panzer 4 but after while in 1944 The Sherman Was put against The Panther, The Tiger, and Upgraded Versions Of The Panzer 4. Now the Panther is considered one of two Best tanks of the Second World War in terms of a Balanc of Armor, Firepower, and Cross-country mobility it's Sloped Armor Was I think protect by around 80mms of Front Armor and was armed with a Long Barreled 75mm Gun and the Tiger was Protected by 100mm or 120mm of Front Armor which had the Famous and Very Feared 88mm Gun how ever even the Previous Weaker versions of the Sherman could Destroy a Tiger or Panther if they caught the Germans off guard and attacked from the sides, or if they got close enough to the front, while the Tiger 2 had 180mm of Front Armor and a Long-Barreled 88mm Gun but wasn't has powerful as its Cousin The Jagdtiger which had Very Strong Armor and a 120mm Gun and was built on the Chassis of the Tiger 2. The Allies however did build tanks specifically designed to Fight those axis tanks like the US M26 Pershing or the Soviet IS-2 which could take a Tiger 2 on. But the biggest problemsfor the German tanks were their Mobility and Numbers as German was not able to build a lot and they could Break down easily or could be flanked by a Fast Allied tank. Some Upgraded Shermans are the US M4A3E8 Easy Eight and The British FireFly which the FireFly was Specifically built to combat the Tiger 1

The "turretless" tanks are actually called tank destroyers. They're more on ambush and usually hidden in trees or any obstacles or have a good view on a road where the allied armoured vehicles may pass. Among these are the SU-152 and ISU-152, the Elefant/Ferdinand (which you called the Leopard at around 14:00, basically Porsche's Tiger Prototype repurposed with a bigger gun), T-95 Super Heavy "tank" which never went into service, and Jagdtiger which was basically a Tiger II with a fixed turret and a monstrous 128mm gun which was used in the Maus Super Heavy Tank. And yes, a lot of these tank destroyers have calibers of 120 to 150mm compared to their tank counterparts which usually carry 75 to 90mm rounds.

I don't know why a lot of Americans seem to forget that France was in WW1, and in terms of tanks well they might not have been the first, but definitely the most innovative. The British Marks were sort of precursors sure, but were a dead end concept after trench warfare. The Renault FT though, its design is still used as the basis of modern MBTs as of today, more than a hundred years later. That's a design as successful as the M2 in the realm of machine guns, quite impressive.

This Just to share information. In World War II the Germans followed the idea of blitzkrieg. This called for fast and maneuverable tanks. The early war panzer 1-3 had armor thickness similar to a Sherman tank but had cannon with very short barrels, the short barrels would help to maneuver in forests and in built-up areas easier. When the Germans invaded France found that their short-barreled Panzer could not penetrate the armor of the Char 1 except for shots to vents on the right side of the tank or with an 88 flak. A list of requirements for a tank armed with 88 mm but before any company could submit a blueprint the invasion of France was over, and the project was canceled. When the Germans invaded Russia and encountered T-34 and KV tank. Again, the Army German created a list of requirements for a tank armed with an 88. When the project was completed, they got the Tiger 1, in the meanwhile Panzer 3 were being upgraded with long 75 mm cannons. Now with the Tigers being employed they found that they couldn’t really use them in blitzkrieg because they were much too slow. So instead, the Tigers would drive forwards to find a good position and fire at the enemy from long range. The tiger has so much armor because the German armor rule of thumb for the frontal armor thickness of a tank is that it own gun cannot penetrate its own armor at 1000 meters.

The Sherman was cheap Maneuverable Easy to produce Easy to maintain Easy to repair Easy to salvage Easy to upgrade And as a Brit for me my go to would always be the Churchill but even then there was no other tank as modular than a Sherman where the British stuffed a 17 pounder anti tank gun into it by placing the radio outside at the back and placing it in sideways, as for the Australians they used a thing called a kangaroo which was a Sherman with its turret removed and an enlarged turret ring and turned it into a troop transport.

The Americans did a review of the firefly and said it was completely unsuitable for battle due to it’s cramped conditions but the British didn’t care so the British were the only ones to have high velocity guns on D-day also when churchill mk1’s were captured by the Germans they said it was not a threat and was outdated not knowing the tiger was very similar in many ways also the churchill became one of the most effective weapons against the Germans when utilised properly

OMG no Sherman was not lightly armored. Effective thickness of the front of the Sherman was just few milimiters less than That of the Tiger (94 vs 102 or somethink like that). It was reasonable resistant to normal 75mm gun commonly used by Germans. Superlong 75mm on Panther or Tiger's 88 would go clean through true, but those was quite rare. Panzer III, Panzer IV and StuG III was much more common. Leopard, Chieftain and Centurion are post WW2 tanks, and with Leopard being used by West Germany and Chieftain and Centurion by UK, they were never put against each others. And all three was MBT with fully rotating turrets. In this part they sing about one think, and display another. On the video you see German Ferinand/Efelant vs Russian SU-152, both late WW2 assault guns/tank destroyers. Tanks on the end are from early cold war and most of them are prototypes than never entered service. The one they are in is Swedish prototype to put Centurion turet on they own chassis.

i have no idea about wich Leopard tank without a traversing turret you are talking about same with the "mobile artillery piece" style of tank.. all Leopard variants from the beginning after WW2 had traversing turrets, pretty good ones actualy too and the guns were were 105mm cannons, first rifled but later on smoothbore when APFS-DS ammunition (Armor-piercing fin-stabilized discarding sabot) came up, from the beginning the young Bundeswehrs doctrine with Leopards was mobility over protection because it was quickly clear that steel armor wouldnt protect you anymore anyway against new and modern, to this time Chemical rounds like HEAT projectiles. And then when composit armor came up and the germans startet the Leopard 2 development wich pretty much introduced the modern Main Battle Tank or MBT concept that we all know from almost every country today, Highly armoured, fast and adaptible.

The Sherman isn't actually as bad as you made it seem. The problem is you're comparing Shermans to the German cats, which were heavy tanks primarily designed for combat with other tanks. The Sherman, when compared to the German medium tanks of it's time, actually had very good armour and good mobility, though it's gun was lacking due to muzzle velocity. In terms of caliber, the Sherman was the same size as or bigger than many German tanks, but it had a very short barrel that made it's muzzle velocity too low to for an effective AP round. If you add angling effectiveness into the equation, most Sherman models had more effective armour than the direct German counterparts. When you compare the American heavy tanks to the German ones of the war you'll find that America's heavies were very comparable and even better in some aspects to the German ones, but the couldn't be used as much in the war as they were significantly harder to ship over and maintain. Also, in terms of survivability, the Shermans were better than any of the German designs in the event of an armour penetration due to the use of multiple techniques and technologies such as wet ammo storage. Quick edit: The armour in the sides of the Tiger and Panther was about the same as the rear, a clean side shot if placed well could actually be far more deadly than one to the rear due to having an increased chance of hitting ammo and crew. Also just wanted to say no hate, love the channel and the vids.

Leopards are the modern German tanks, the ones you're talking about at that point are called casemates (for the name of the design). Specific German models have various names such as the Ferdinand or Elefant, but there are many more.

The tank that Sabaton was crewing was a Centurion. The tanks I could make out from the video that it fights were an M103, which is the one that bounces a shell off their turret, and an FV4005, which is the giant one they faced off against and destroyed at the end. Edit: The light tank they flip looks like it is an EBR, but I'm not nearly as good at identifying light tanks like that as the rest. Those kinds of vehicles are extremely light and use wheels instead of tracks.

i need to correct you on the sherman armor...: yeah thickness was not that great but the sloping of the armor gave the standard M4 Sherman nearly 4 inches ( 100 cm) of frontal armor. that is nearly the same as the fricking Tiger 1. so thats not bad, the big difference was the guns: germany in WW2 had the best guns put on tanks in that time. thats what made the difference not armor thickness.

Leopard 1s are not SPGs (Slef-propelled Guns) and same goes to what you said about the Chieftains and Centurions all three of them are Main Battle Tanks. The Centurion is the first modern tank created by the british it is the one sabaton is using in the video altho it has been modified by Wargaming and if I remember correctly they are still being used today by South Africa as the Olifant. the Leopard 1 is Germany’s first main battle tank during the cold war and was the first to put a 105mm gun on it which became the standard main gun of the west during the cold war. For the Cheiftains they are also a british made Main battle tank during the the mid 60s altho they were quickly replace by the challenger due to some technical problems.
