======= The Lost Battalion LYRICS =======
Far from their land, as they made their stand
They stood strong and the legend still lives on
1918 the great war rages on, a battalion is lost in the Argonne
Under fire, there’s nothing they can do, there’s no way they can get a message through
Suffer heavy losses as the battle carries on, liberty division standing strong
Far from their land, as they made their stand
A disregarded demand
It’s surrender or die, and the stakes are high
They live or they die, there’s no time for good bye
Weapon in hand, as they made their stand
Still disregarding demand
They would never comply they would rather die
Broke through the blockade they were finally saved
Friendly fire, munitions running low, the supplies they were dropped upon their foe
1918 the war still rages on, the battalion (is) still trapped in the Argonne
Chose not to surrender, they chose victory or defeat, fallen brothers resting by their feet
Far from their land, as they made their stand
A disregarded demand
It’s surrender or die, and the stakes are high
Live or die, who can tell? there´s no good bye
With a weapon in hand, as they made their stand
Still disregarding demand
They would never comply they would rather die
They stood strong and the legend still lives on
Suffered heavy losses through the great war they stood strong, but the memory of the fallen still lives on
========= Historic Fact ==========
Though they were completely surrounded by the Germans and were subjected to friendly fire, 554 all-American soldiers, who were part of the 77th Division, continued fighting for a week during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive in 1918. They are known as The Lost Battalion.

And the 442nd Infantry Regiment! They were composed entirely of second generation Japanese immigrants, who when told they could leave the internment (concentration) camps by enlisting, enlisted. I imagine that the battalion refused to surrender both out of pride and exhaustion, as well as to make a point. A soldier doesnt want sympathy, especially from the enemy. But the surrender was made both out of consideration and as respect.

If anyone is interested, the uniform and some of the kit of the commanding officer of the Lost Battalion is on display at the George S. Patton museum at Fort Knox in Kentucky. Charles White Whittlesey received the Medal of Honor for valor and it is presumed he committed suicide in 1921 due to survivor's guilt. May the nine companies 154th Infantry Brigade, 77th Division rest well.

@@ZudinGodofWar It is pretty common for people to have some form of guilt after surviving a traumatic event where mass casualties happen. Those survivors feel guilty/unworthy of having survived the event and cannot forget those who perished. It gnaws at their psyche. This is really common amongst the civilian population when a particularly nasty natural disaster happens.

"I remember the Argonne, 1918. The sounds of that battle still haunts me to this day. The machineguns firing from enemy lines. The sickening sound of a bayonet tearing through human flesh. The soldier next to me firing his sidearm in desperation. All these sounds still echo in my mind, and as conducted by death himself it all comes together as music. Funny enough, that was in reference to the order given by the German command, for the Americans to surrender. Major Whittlesey, assuming that his order from American command to never surrender was still in play, pocketed it and kept fighting. American command was desperate to try and rescue the 77th, with General Pershing (who was of higher rank than a 5-star general) himself leading the recovery effort.

Hi Sabaton. I imagiene you won't see this comment, but I had to express my deep love for this album. As a history teacher I often teach students who believe history to be boring and unimportant. New ways of presenting history challenges that belief, and your new album is a definite example of that! I do believe I will present in to my students later, as an intro to their subjects :D So thanks for helping to make history "cool" again!

My Great-Grandfather served during the First World War in the Argonne (though he wasn't a part of the Lost Battalion). He told my grandmother a really interesting story. He was by himself, lost in the Forest and a German soldier crashed into him. The soldier looked up at my great-grandfather and he (my GG) said it was like looking into a mirror. The man started speaking to him in German, trying to convey something. He then embraced my GG or shook his hand or something along those lines. They then ran off in opposite directions. The really interesting thing is, my GG was just the second generation of his family born in the U.S, and his grandfather was born in Germany. He was always convinced that he had experienced a chance encounter with a long-lost relative. I always thought it was sad that they had to meet under the circumstances they did.

That's interesting. One of my great grandfathers survived Pearl Harbor without getting injured. He joined the military at 17, which was illegal back then, I guess you say that was punishment. My other great grandfather survived a grenade blast and helped liberate Paris. I think he stormed Normandy too, which would mean he fought for France from the beginning to the end of the campaign. What a brave man.

This song inspired me to write a short story in college about a fictitious soldier who was a part of The Lost Battalion. It also inspired me to research further into my great grandfather's history, as he too was a soldier in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive, in Company C of the 305th Infantry Regiment to be more specific. He didn't suffer through the trials The Lost Battalion faced, but he still came away with terrible memories and a deep hate of the smell of cheese. Thank you for the song and the honor it provides to the men of the 308th, 307th and 306th.
