One of the few foreign generals given mention in the british history books - general Vladimir Vazov. In 1936 he was invited to the victory celebration in London. When the Bulgarian delegation was passing, the British ordered "Flags down! General Vazov, the victor of Doiran is coming through!" Later Lord Milne greeted Vazov telling him he was honoured to meet him. Milne said he respected the bulgarian soldiers not only because they were tough, but because like the British, they fought like gentlemen.

Fun fact: The bulgarian army at Doiran was pretty pissed at general Vladimir Vazov, for making them dig trenches, and build bunkers for 6 months in the hot summer, instead of relaxing. The underground tunnels and bunkers they dug, were bigger than today's Sofia metro. In the end, it turned out to be the right call - the british shot more than 150 thousand artillery shells and lots of poison gas. Only 7 people died, because they lost their way, the rest were completely unharmed. When the british aproached the trenches they were expecting to find just bodies, but instead the whole 9-th Pleven division started pushing them back. After the war, when general Vladimir Vazov became mayor of Sofia, women would carry food to his office in gratitude for saving their sons and husbands - only 700 casualties after a battle like that.

1917 year : Over 330,000 British, French and Serbs attacked the Bulgarian positions on the front near Doiran. The ninth infantry Pleven division of General Vladimir Vazov fought in the most difficult section. At the decisive moment, the Bulgarians rose in a knife attack ... and won. Finally, someone acknowledged that my country exists and did something in WW1. WW1 video games like Battlefield 1 completely ignore the fact that Bulgaria took part in WW1, and WW1 documentaries I've seen make it sound like WW1 was just Germany against everyone else with maybe Austria-Hungary mentioned here and there. After not hearing a single song about Bulgaria in Sabaton's last WW1 album, I thought that they too will completely ignore the fact that my country took part in the Great War, but they didn't and this makes me happy. This album as whole is phenomenal, great job Sabaton, and thank you for making a song about Bulgaria.

Rastko Nosović Mate. The Serbian win at Dobro Pole had nothing to do with the Serbs and everything to do with the incompetence of the german high command which refused to give an order for counter attack. The same goes for Doyran. When Bulgaria joined WW2 Serbia was completely annexed, and the Bulgarian push into Greece was very successful. The only reason Bulgaria didn’t completely take out Greece and Serbia is because th Germans wanted to leave one more front open so the brits and French would have to send more troops to the Balkans, this weakening them in the west. Furthermore, Serbs and French outnumbered Bulgarians 5 to 1 at Dobro Pole.

While the saying "war without hate" is often incorrectly attributed to Erwin Rommel, it seems to be a far more eastern concept. We've been at war for centuries, and every eastern European nation has ruled over some other eastern European nation in the past, so no one really hates anyone. I'm sure I have family who did some pretty horrific things to Poles, and yet, as a Russian, I can walk down any street in Krakow, Gdansk, or Warsaw, wearing a Russian army uniform, and no one will care. Well, they might be a bit confused, but no more than anyone would be to see a foreign soldier in uniform in their country

1917 year : Over 330,000 British, French and Serbs attacked the Bulgarian positions on the front near Doiran. As a Bulgarian - this song filled my heart with joy. I am proud with my great grandfathers. I have two of them that fought for our independency and freedom. One of them died at the Bulgarian - Serbian war from the same period that the song describes. He was at the United States of America when the war broke out, but answered the call of duty and came back to fight and defend his motherland. He was shot and killed near our western border, fighting Serbian troops. (No hard feelings for the Serbians) My other great grand father is Stoyan Malchankov - Voivoda (Voivoda means something like a captain in my language) - you can google him. Louis-Emil Eyer was born in 1865 in Switzerland and came to Bulgaria at the invitation of the Bulgarian ruler to found, together with several other Swiss, the sports movement and sport education. When the Balkan wars and the First World War began, he volunteered at the front and became the commander of some of the toughest units in the Bulgarian army. He died at Doiran as a Bulgarian officer holding two crosses for bravery. In his honor there is a Bulgarian-Swiss society today, streets in Sofia, stadiums, and Bulgarian scientists in the Antarctic have named a peak in his honor in the Ellsworth Mountains. Bulgarian here. Thank you, Sabaton for making this song! I've listened to it like 100 times and still can't get enough. We, as a nation, needed this song a lot now. I don't think you will ever understand how important this was for us and how proud you made us feel. I don't know what to say except one big Thank you for making our hearts beat fast and our eyes see the light. I can't wait to see you in Bulgaria again. Be prepared to feel our love and appreciation.

Thank you for this song! Here are some facts about the Battle of Doiran: The battle for a breakthrough in the Bulgarian positions began on 22 April and continued intermittently until 9 May 1917. The assault began with a bitter four-day artillery barrage in which the British fired about 100,000 shells. As a result, the earthworks and some wooden structures in the front positions were destroyed. The Bulgarians also opened fire from the batteries between Vardar and Doiran. General Vladimir Vazov ordered fire day and night on the Allied positions. The initial several-hour struggle between the British and Bulgarian batteries was followed by a one-hour Bulgarian counter-barrage in which 10,000 shells were fired. The British infantry began its attack on the night of 24-25 April - 12 companies attacked the Bulgarian 2nd Brigade and after a bloody fight managed to take the "Nerezov", "Knyaz Boris" and "Pazardzhik" positions. After a Bulgarian counter-attack the British were repulsed with heavy casualties and by 8 pm had retreated. The British assaults on the right and central fronts were also repulsed with heavy casualties after help from the Bulgarian artillery. The British attacks in the next two days were defeated by constant Bulgarian fire and counter-attacks. Due to this fire the British withdrew to their initial positions on 27 April, the Bulgarians immediately started to reconstruct the destroyed fortifications. Due to criticism by their high command, the British made new attempts at a breakthrough. On 8 May, after a long artillery barrage, they began another attack. The main assault started at 9 pm with five waves of British troops attacking the Bulgarian positions. After four attacks during the night of 8-9 May the British were defeated and suffered enormous casualties. A Times correspondent wrote that the British soldiers called the "Boris" point "the valley of death". The artillery duel continued until 9 May but due to heavy casualties the British had to abandon all attacks. They lost 12,000 killed, wounded and captured of which more than 2,250 were buried by the Bulgarian defenders. The losses of the Ninth Pleven Infantry Division were 2,000 of whom 900 died from disease and wounds. Vladimir Vazov was promoted to Major-General. Just as an additional information General Vazov is the brother of one of the most famous Bulgarian novelists Ivan Vazov.

"Bulgaria held them back... " My great grandfather and thousand brave bulgarian lions gave their lives defending Bulgaria back then. Thank You, Sabaton for honoring them. Recently visited Doiran looking for the grave of the great Bulgarians fallen there, tooo sad nothing....this was bulgarian land.

@@simeondunev4890 true, I just meant that bulgarian surrendering was the first official sign of defeat of the central power. Ofc the war was lost and nobody would question bulgarian bravery and efficiency in battle (I hope, for anyone knowing History)
