The fighting on the Macedonian Front is often overlooked when one thinks of the Great War, and it was even scoffed at by some at the time, who called the Entente Army of the Orient the 'Gardeners of Salonika', but it was of great importance, defended brilliantly by the Bulgarians, and its collapse heralded the end of the war. What else do you think is overlooked about the Great War that deserves more focus? How indigenous people did a lot of the recognition work and had to renounce their native right in order to join the fight. Once they got back they had basically no recognition for their efforts and where not given any of the veterans care.

When I listen to this music, I always feel under siege from przemyśl (I'm Hungarian). Everyone underestimates this siege, even though it was the Stalingrad of the First World War. If the Russian troops had managed to break through here, the way to the central part of Europe would have been open to them. By the time the fortress fell, they were so exhausted that they could not continue their advance. The success is largely due to Hungarians and Poles.

So that's where those rifles went... try guessing if it's legal to own and use a working one in Bulgaria right now.
@Jungles_of_Lustria2 жыл бұрын
@@PowermadNavigator I'm guessing it falls under the old adage that if you want to own and shoot a gun you should join the army? Bulgaria Ukraine and Austria exported a ton of these rifles here to Canada in the 1960s 70s and 80s. But we could never get ammunition for it so they used to be absolutely dirt cheap. Now ammo is made commercially in Serbia by PRVI partisan. As far as I know they are actually using the original military dies and equipment from Bulgaria in the 30s that they bought sometime ago! It's not cheap roughly 45 Euros per box of 20
@PowermadNavigator2 жыл бұрын
@@Jungles_of_Lustria your assumption is quite spot on. The older Mannlicher models that used black powder, non-Spitzer ammo might just be different in status, but you still can't take one hunting. The Partisan factories make good stuff, Serbia has been outpacing our firearms production of late. 45 Euros is quite, quite hefty, however.

They call that battle "The little Verdun" in Eastern Europe. The moment when Bulgaria hold the two of the biggest empires in the world - France and Britain. There are also Sebrian and Greek troops. After the flank was breached at Dobro Pole and the army had to leave the position at Doiran, for two days the enemy did not dare to attack a completely empty position. As a Bulgarian commander said to the men: "Behind us is Bulgaria, our homes, our families, we must protect them". English major was recorded saying to his troops: "Learn to die like the Bulgarians, then you can defeat them." Bulgaria had 850 000 strong military, at about 5 million population, imagine that...

On the contrary. You can thank the British (who were secretly negotiating with the Bulgarians in London at the time) for not allowing the Serbs to preventively attack the mobilising Bulgarian army in the automn of 1915. At that time it was clear that the Bulgarians would attack Serbia from the back, especially since the Serbian armies were in the North and West, fighting the German and Austro-Hungarian armies. This strategic error of the British did cost couple of thousand men at Dorian but it cost couple of hundred thousand men to the Serbs.

@@georgitodorov4048 Well in fact all of their armies were retreating from the joint Austro-Hungarian and German attack. They were going south, not far from the Bulgarian border. Just a word from the Brits and it would have been 1913 all over again. And you know what happened in 1913, right?

I was fortunate enough to witness the premiere of Valley of Death at Hills of Rock festival in Plovdiv. I had quite the adventure the week prior, drove across the country, from town to town, had some stuff to do. It was an exhausting week, and to be fair, I went to the festival for Slipknot. Attended all three days though, and I gotta say, Sabaton threw an amazing show to close out the festival. It was awesome. I wasn't a fan, but witnessing this, they definitely got my respect and next time they come back to Bulgaria, I would definitely go see them again.

Great episode! Was really interesting finding out about a fascinating yet often-overlooked front of the First World War. As someone who has been to Bulgaria and knows some Bulgarians, I have to say Par that I don't think the Bulgarians would mind waiting 10 years for this song. From what I've heard from the Bulgarians I know, there's a joke among them that they're always late. Hell, their king even survived an assassination attempt because he was late. Though I guess I may be part-Bulgarian considering how long it took me to watch this episode 😄. Oh well, that just means I can feel patriotic while listening to this song.

*Im from Macedonia, the funny thing is my great great grandfather from my mother's family side fought for Bulgarian Tsardom and my father's side fought for the Serbian Kingdom and the great great grandfather from my Serbian friend (father's side) fought for the Bulgarians. It's like my profile states Balkan madness and that's why war in the Balkans is so tragic, because in the Balkans from the black Sea to the Vardar valley until Triglava we are all a big family.* 🇷🇸🤝🇭🇷🤝🇧🇦🇸🇮🤝🇲🇪🤝🇲🇰🤝🇧🇬

4:00 and absurdly motivated... I would also like to add that toward the end of the war, Bulgaria was kind of slightly feeling the strain of mobilizing about 22% of the population to war and this contributed to the French and Serbian breakthrough on that front. There were food and equipment shortages and regular insubordination in a couple of places which very much contributed to this outcome.
