The Warsaw Uprising against the German occupying forces started on 1 August 1944 facing the Soviet Operation Bagration. About 40,000 soldiers of the Polish Home Army (Armia Krajowa) under General Count Tadeusz Komorowski (1895-1966) tried to liberate the Polish capital city before the Red Army's invasion. A victorious upheaval against the German occupiers was meant to be a symbol of a strong and prospective independent Poland.
After fierce house-to-house fightings in the streets of Warsaw in the first days the Poles controlled substantial parts of the city, when gradually German SS and police units under General of the SS Erich von dem Bach-Zelewski (1899-1972) gained the upper hand. The British Royal Air Force supported the Poles with weapons and supply goods.
On 2 October 1944 the Polish formations had to ground arms. About 180,000 Poles, mostly civilians, had lost their lifes. Especially SS and police units committed numerous massacres.
Finally German formations destroyed the majority of the nearly deserted capital.
CAUTION!
I won't tolerate any racist, discriminatory or in any other form inappropriate comments! This song neither glorifies war, nor National Socialism, but should be considered as a historical work.
"No, we don't glorify anything, we just tell stories about things that have happened." (Rikard Sundén, Sabaton)

----------

Every year, on the 1st of August, 5.00 P.M. ("zero hour") the sirens in the Warsaw begin to sound and whole city stops and gives respect to those who fought and died in The Uprising. It is amazing and breathtaking moment to see a big, 1,5 million city freeze.

Blocks_R_Us98 My grandad was one of the very last to be caught. The Russians said they would put a pontoon over the river to allow the remaining Poles across to escape, then they layer down a heavy smoke cover to 'put the pontoon up'. My grandad stayed behind to cover the group and when the smoke cleared, it was revealed that the Russians had lied and that there was no pontoon. He was arrested by Nazi Germany and eventually liberated from a concentration camp.

It needlessly killed the polish and caused more casualties than anything else. All it did was make the Germans hate the poles more.

Look at Polish history and you will find a brave independent people who for the 100 years of the partition of their country never lost hope to regain national sovereignty, and in fact attempting to take matters into their own hands in the form of a couple of major revolts during the 19th century (one of the largest was the 1853 Duchy of Warsaw which was brutally crushed by the Tsar).

The Soviets refused to help at all. The Allies tried to use Soviet airbases to supply the rebellion, however the Soviets refused. They were forced to fly in supplies from Britain and we're not able to take as much due to the length of the trip. Also, the Soviets fired at Allied planes that accidentally wandered into Soviet airspace. (I don't regard the Soviet Union as part of the Allies during WWII. They were their own side.)

Chris Kyle, Audie Murphy, Marcus Luttrell, Roy Benavidez among a lot of others. Benavidez was paralyzed by a land mine in Vietnam, and while in the hospital, disobeyed orders to get out of bed at night and did his own physical therapy - pushing his way up against a wall until he was standing, then trying to work his legs. Eventually, he regained mobility and deployed back to Vietnam, where he was shot, bayoneted, and bludgeoned several times evacuating wounded troops and securing sensitive materials. And he still didn't die. In WWII, the 36th Infantry Division (AKA Lone Star Division) - a Texas National Guard unit - had 14 members awarded the Medal of Honor.

Indeed. The Polish Home Army was dead-set against Stalin and the main point of the Uprising was to liberate Poland before the Soviets 'liberated' them. In the end, Poland became a Soviet buffer state and Stalin had his own secret police round up and 'remove' any surviving members of the Home Army.

More than just 'help that never came.' It was a strategic move by the USSR to allow the Nazis and Polish rebels to kill each other and just wait until the Nazis crush the rebellion. Had the USSR supported the rebels, it would have given legitimacy to the Polish home government. The Soviets obviously had other plans to install a communist puppet state. In fact, when they eventually 'liberated' Warsaw, they persecuted surviving rebels as 'Nazi collabators'.

If I ever became a history teacher, I would say "Fuck the American school system" and teach my students whatever I wanted. I'd teach them about the Polish Uprising during WWII, how Sweden nearly took over most of Europe under a King who started when he was only 15, how 40 Belgian soldiers defended their homeland from a widely outnumbering Nazi onslaught. I would teach everything, and play Sabaton almost every single day.

Now Sabaton needs to make a song about the Miracle on the Vistula when the Poles were heavily outnumbered, out gunned, and literally needed a "Hail Mary" well... She showed up... The Communists under Lenin at the front lines turn and ran when they saw the blessed mother with angels carrying flaming swords being cast against them. Poland is very Catholic and to this day many honor what the blessed mother did for them that day and all of Europe. One of the ideas for the lyrics I had "Against the Poles, a Hoard of red, an army of demons poised like a serpent a final charge the Communists made "HURRY COMRADES OVER THE VISTULA RIVER VICTORY IS OURS" over the mist of the river Vistula came a Polish priest to meet the enemy in full charge bearing a cross holding it straight at them, standing before them he made a call to God a Hail Mary he prayed Struck down by enemy bullets a price in blood was paid a sacrifice to God he became, Mary through the clouds brought reinforcements Angels with flaming swords, warriors of God appeared making the Red Army retreat crushing Lenins dream of a Red Europe on that fateful day A Miracle on the Vistula was made! Chorus or Break Down (The part they repeat between parts of the song) Miracle on the Vistula, a battle spiritually and physically fought, Lenins evil plots thwarted by the holy mother of God!" What yall think?

Life isn't fair, and Poland's suffering over the past 80-ish years proves that. Not only were they repressed by the nazi occupation, roughly a year before the war ended the soviet union set a communist regime there which lasted for more than 50 years before the poles finally regained their independence in 1989. The USA and NATO really should've done more to help the eastern bloc.
