A fierce bombing strategy codenamed 'Operation Gomorrah' was used by the Allies during World War Two and commenced on July 24, 1943. On the evening of July 27, a fleet of 730 British bombers appeared over Hamburg unleashing over 2,300 tons of bombs. Deadly and uncontrollable fires broke out all over the city. My nan lived in London as a small girl during WWII. She told me about how her street got bombed, and that she could hear the bombs exploding, one by one, getting closer and closer to her house until a bomb crashed through her roof, and landed in a large barrel of water in the basement. Her neighbourhood was destroyed, but thankfully the bomb that hit her house was a dud. She then had to live in a shelter, and her room had an AA gun on the roof above it, going off at all hours. She was always a bit jittery and that explains it I think. She also told me about hearing the V-1 missiles which she referred to as the "doodlebugs". She mentioned how no one worried too much until you heard the engine cut out because that was when it was about to hit something. My grandfather was also a young lad in England in that time, and apparently they once had a German bomber crash land in a field near their house, which he and his twin brother went into and explored while the thing was still burning lol. My grandfather grew up to join the British Army with his twin brother. He was initially in explosive ordnance disposal, then moved to the paras. And his twin brother was a tanker.

All I can think about is the moments of terror the poor dresden people were going through between the air raid sirens, fires blazing, the sounds of AA and Flak fire, I am glad anyone even survived this because from the way it sounds like in the song, nobody lived. In reality they killed over 40k civillians in the bomb runs. Which equates to just a little under 3% of dresden at the time. Honestly even with all the stuff germany was doing at the time, the Civillians didnt desserve to burn. Great song tho 10/10.

Feels like one of their songs where there's more emphasis on the event rather than the song as an art form. I remember watching a documenatary of allied carpet bombing raids in Modern History. The destruction was enough to scare anyone. Sometimes though, it's not just an explosion and a city that crumbles. One of the sites was a German city famous for housing historically significant art pieces. The bombs caused firestorms which accelerated everything down to ash. A fire tornado pulling less dense air up and cold air would rush in swirling from the sides. Perpetual flame. Firestorm.

One of my favorite songs has finally been done in this Art of War album style. I will probably listen to this everyday. (Sad for those people who have made copies of the song and made music videos)

Something I like about this song is that it captures how _personal_ Dresden was for the English bomber crews. While the song at large can apply to the entire campaign, Dresden stands out as it was basically revenge for Coventry, a city high command had to sacrifice in order to maintain the Intel advantage of having cracked enigma.
@knightblade0188 Жыл бұрын
It was also because the Soviets requested it. Dresden was Germany’s next line of defense and was meant to stall for time against the Soviets. So the Soviets asked their western allies to delete it. Ironic because the Germans truly believed the British wouldn’t bomb it.

The Coventry sacrificed for enigma story is a total myth.

So I'm posting this before watching. I came just after Nuclear Attack because it was under the video. I thought it was about the Fire Bombings of Tokyo, but it's about bombing runs in general. I will send an update after listening. Update: The song was a lot more intense than expected to be. Definitely going into my music folder.

Just got tickets to see you guys on September 23rd in Minneapolis! If you have time my town, Lindström (🇸🇪) is only a 50 minute drive north. Vilhelm Moberg traveled to our area to write his book series 'The Emigrants', and we're fiercely proud of our claim to Swedish heritage! "Välkommen till Lindström" 😉
