This is the second episode of Sabaton History about one of the songs of the upcoming Sabaton Album 'The Great War'. By supporting us on Patreon, you can help us continue making these KZbin videos. You will also get some exclusive content - like a full version of Indy and Joakim talking about The Red Baron, which is live on our Patreon site right here: www.patreon.com/posts/full-length-red-26854763 Indy mentions the Dicta Boelcke in the video. These are the eight points that Boelcke and von Richthofen used in the skies (source: Werner, Johannes von, 1932): 1. Try to secure advantages before attacking. If possible, keep the sun behind you. 2. Always carry through an attack when you have started it. 3. Fire only at close range, and only when your opponent is properly in your sights. 4. Always keep your eye on your opponent, and never let yourself be deceived by ruses. 5. In any form of attack it is essential to assail your enemy from behind. 6. If your opponent dives on you, do not try to evade his onslaught, but fly to meet it. 7. When over the enemy's lines never forget your own line of retreat. 8. For the Staffel (squadron): Attack on principle in groups of four or six. When the fight breaks up into a series of single combats, take care that several do not go for the same opponent. I've lived close to the airfield where he landed when he was injured for most of my life (Markebeke Airfield)... The castle stills exists to this day in Belgium but is now in private hands ... The only thing that remains from the airfield is a small fragment of a bunker at the end of the strip. Still ... It gave me chills passing by such a historical place and it will for sure give me even more chills with this song in my headset ...

I think much of the Red Baron's modern legend is owed to his funny pages nemesis Snoopy. Their legendary rivalry led to songs that were popular in my dad's day that were the first place I heard of the man. Though Snoopy's creator, Charles M. Schulz was born somewhat after the first World War, it had a deep and meaningful impact on his life and work, and included in that his his cartoon dog's fantasy of being a World War I flying ace. Peanuts in turn had and continues to have an enormous impact on both American and global popular culture.

I think the reason for the Red Braron fame is the extensive machince of propganda that Germany and Allies had. Don't get me wrong on all scales the Red Baron wasn't only pilot but to some point a strategist. Why you may say tge Allies potrayed the red baron like the red knight he was ? Well I think they needed recruits and what better way to do so than creating a living myth on one side we have the Red Fokker on the other we have the Green Spith "ours of course is better they have a great one too, so that make our plan even greater".

It is often claimed, that day The Red Baron died his cousin Wolfram was atacked by Roy Brown´s Brother, who had his first day as pilot. Then Brown´s Brother was atacked by Manfred´s Brother Lothar, who than was atacked by Roy Brown himself. Who got in a dogfight with The Red Baron...

My take on the Baron Legend is that well... he sort has set the stage of the glory of airborne combat. Who DIDN'T grow up with a thrill to fly a fighter plane. Hell my mom wanted to enlist because of the legend, however she would have been doing helicopters in the Gulf War. All around media we see things similar to his bravado, confidence, and intellect as well as the concept of this prototype/glaring plane. He basically MADE an archetype which writers today claim that such archetypes are so culturally imbued that we naturally make such tendancies to know it with MINIMAL exposure and through cultural differences. A good one is the "retired badass" concept where a seemingly decrepit old man can demonstrate characteristics that exceed mere appearanc. Two examples to me of the influence of the Baron would be Star Wars and Mobile Suit Gundam. In Star Wars, Darth Vader flew a distinct tie fighter crafted by his own design and took down multiple rebel ships on the surface of the Death Star. Just the emotional context of the scene alone demonstrated that he was an ace in his own right. Secondly, Char from Mobile Suit Gundam. He uses a robotic suit that flies LIGHTNING fast, is bright red, and has been dubbed the Red Comet. His people admire him as a soldier and despite his sociopathic tendancies, he's a brilliant tactician and a has full control even in a dire situation. But despite all the differences this one thing is true... all iterations of this imposed ace are the facts that they are natural born daredevils

The red baron is remembered this way due to a few thing for exampel having scored 80 confirmerd kills making him an ace eight times over a rare feat considering ww1 pilots in general even some the best pilots of there time where not expected to live very long. More broadly speaking ww1 fighter pilots general most notable aces where not national hero there where often romanticized figures. Last the red baron was not onected to any war crimes nor was he consumed by nationalism and often showed a sence of nobelity despite fighting in a war he was feared my many yet respected by all for his skilll in combat and leadership. Starkly contrasting the Kiaser who was notable unpopular with the troops.

His legend is preserved in the United States and possibly Europe because of Charles Shultz's popular "Peanuts" comics. His name is burned into the minds of the youth of the Anglosphere from a young age thanks his rivalry with Snoopy the Beagle being on full display in the Charlie Brown holiday specials.

what the Red Baron was, was a symbol of the German military, you said it yourselves, he was a celebrity, when he was shot down, the German morale plummeted faster than Manfred's plane itself, that was because whenever the German soldiers saw his plane, they felt a little safer it was a moment of inspiration, but for the allies, it was a dreadful thing to see, his blood red plane, was a symbol of fear, but they still respected the guy and gave him full military honors that he deserved, which shows that he was likely a symbol of bravery, dash and dare, he had charisma that was undeniable, even to the allies.
