The aircraft that was to carry out the flight was a 12-year-old Sud Aviation Caravelle SE-210, operated by Sobelair. The first flight was on 23 February 1961 and it was delivered on 1 March 1961 under registration OO-SRD, as the fourth Caravelle for Sabena. The aircraft remained operational for Sabena until April 1971, after which it was subleased to Sobelair until December 1973.
Sobelair then leased the aircraft to Royal Air Maroc, which launched on Dec. 10. Departing from Paris - Le Bourget, a short flight to Casablanca in Morocco, with a stopover in Tangier.
All 106 occupants of the Caravelle flight, including the Sabena/Sobelair crew, were killed.
