Honestly yes. The legitimacy of the “leaks” and concepts were just so great when they were around, it could be big wast, a different world, a different story. But they had to take the safe route, which just makes it seem like they didn’t have confidence enough to make something completely of their own, wordlbuilding on their own. Which is honestly a shame because there are just so many different routs to take with a show like that, which can still work. But unfortunately it just became a “same world just timeskip and different characters, but remember to bring up old characters every time we can”. I suppose we had too high expectations believing they’d come up with something completely original. But then again it also shows how good G4 actually was, in terms of story and world building, that the creators of G5 is scared to try something new, because it’ll pale in comparison and potentially won’t attract the same type of popularity.

As a nanny who’s been forced to watch multiple different kids shows, G5 is feeling very reminiscent of some of the kid shows I’ve watched where they have basic characters with basic plot lines that don’t bother to go above the bar because it is-as mentioned before-a kids show. G4 is very near and dear to my heart because it did go above the bar. It had endearing characters, good chemistry in the relationships, solid writing, fleshed out villains, consistent world-building, and a unique visual style! It managed to balance out darker themed episode with fun episodes. It upsets me to see that they’ve dumbed down the newer show and modernized it so much. In my opinion, kids shows tend to underestimate children’s ability to enjoy well developed content. A good show aimed at kids should also be enjoyable by some older audiences, too-because that is the mark of good storytelling. But again, that’s just my opinion.
@TheWinjin2 жыл бұрын
One of the worst things in existence is that notion that kids cartoons should have absolutely basic scenarios. You end up, as a kid, bored out of your goddamn mind. Trouble is, all the really grown-up stuff is about boring things like relationships or betrayal and they blow each other up a lot and sometimes even Nice characters DIE and that's scary for a kid - but this "kids" stuff is just dumb. I'm small, not dumb, I can follow a complicated plot if it's coherently told. I watched Terminator 2 when I was, like, five, and I completely understood the plot and motivation of the characters, except the guy that licked Sarah, that was stupid for the little me, but still I understood that it's, like, danger, and he's bad. So the kids show that actually go above and beyond to deliver ACTUAL story always stood out for me. That's what I always loved about, say, Disney and Pixar cartoons. Lilo and Stitch, Toy Story, Bug's Life - all of them have real plots, with complicated characters who may be even not all black and white!

a thing that i've noticed art style-wise: the color palettes for All of these new ponies are just Too Bright and Too Loud. lauren faust knows how to use colors and palettes to make all ponies (even background ones) have some sort of personality! the mane six are extremely recognizable just based on their color palettes alone. you could make a minimalist background with just pinkie pie's colors and fans would still recognize it as being at least inspired by her colors. with these new generation of ponies, everyone has these bright, clashing colors or colors that are just too similar to each other so nothing pops and everything looks like a mess of randomly generated hex codes. part of this is also just how colors can look on 3D rigs vs. on flat 2D planes. its much, much harder to map specific colors onto models and get them to look right than it is to just color pick and drop onto 2D rigs. however, it IS possible to make them look good, the show just doesn't have the budget

I think some of them have decent color palettes, but majority don't. Like, Izzy's palette works I think. The blue isn't too bright, or similar to the purple, and it's bright yes-But dull enough to not be an eyesore. I like Zipp's palette, mostly because trans pony aha, but Hitch & Sunny's colors are both a little too bright, and clash. I think if they gave sunny a deeper colored mane & dulled her coat a little it would've looked better. Hitch.. Needs his colors toned down. He needs his yellow toned down a touch. The green needs to be dulled a bit. Pipp's pallette on the other hand, blends too much. Her coat or mane should've been shifted. Coat lighter, mane darker, or just different colors. Don't even get me started on Mr. Big Mac Lite but worse. The red/yellow combo can be done well! But not like that! But another thing is, G4 has more colors because of cutie marks. They've got about 5 colors each, if not more, where G5 has at most about 3 each. Making their palettes too generic.

It's a-symptomatic with what I've dubbed the Netflix Approach. Namely, without the restraints of traditional TV meaning that new viewers would be lost by a continuous story when episodes are aired out of order, companies are using it to go the whole hog and tell continuous stories ala Game of Thrones. Power Rangers is doing the same thing and it's probably not a coincidence that both it and MLP are owned by Hasbro and are also airing on Netflix. They're trying to build a grand narrative but are struggling with both the fact that the season is twenty episodes long which makes having a continuous arc difficult combined with the fact they're mandated to have at least some filler episodes to get used to the characters. Power Rangers has managed much better since it has always been an episodic show so they're kept the same approach and sprinkled in a larger ongoing narrative. This is a good example of how combining filler and a larger overarching plot can backfire.

I think the reason why G5 feels so watered down compared to G4 is because G4 was created by someone (Lauren Faust) who was an actual fan of the franchise growing up. Lauren based the characters on her old Mlp toys, and created a show that kids and adults who grew up with the Og mlp could watch. G5 doesn’t have that same level of intimacy, It feels like it was made by producers and corporate executives who viewed MLP as a toy for little girls, and nothing more. Hopefully when G6 (I say when because we all know hasbro is going to keep mlp around) comes into fruition, it’ll be made by someone who grew up with G4, and carry that love into the iteration, the same way that Lauren carried her love of G1 into FIM.

As someone who loved G4 and Twilight herself, I'm pretty much concerned that this generation would possibly ruin her character more just to give the new main characters their heroic moment. Her sealing away all the magic from ponies is already out of character since she never even thought of that before when things got hectic in G4. They could've just made G5 a completely different generation just like what they did with the previous generations, and I feel like they would get more freedom into what they input in the show without thinking about the continuity of G4.

Sealing away magic, I could totally see Twilight doing. If she was left on her own with no supervision or input, then she would definitely do it as a last resort to save all ponies from destruction or slavery. HECK EVEN BACKGROUND CHARACTERS HAD SIGNATURE TRAITS FOR EXAMPLE- DERPY, THE VIOLIN PONY (octavia i think) AND THE HEADPHONE PONY! But the newer characters in g5 dont really have any signature traits, theyre kinda just a regular friend group?

In all fairness, G4 (like a lot of kids' shows) was vague about the Mane 6's ages, and tended to blend different age-groups together. Sure, the Mane 6 are responsible and have jobs and all, but... they also have (had) sleepovers, celebrate birthdays with the enthusiasm of teenagers, etc. Generally I respected the way the writers showed that children and adults don't have to be all-that-different, and that adults can still have fun, and all. Still, when compared to characters like Mrs. Cake, it's easy to see the Mane 6 aren't _definitely_ adults.

But you can't explore them without letting go of the past. shows like Samurai Jack, Phineas and Ferb, and Avatar: the Last Airbender are proof that you can make shows for kids that are still enjoyable for adults. It pisses me off that so many soulless corporations just think "minimal effort, the stupid kids don't know better" and just churn out the same garbage that's going to be consumed and forgotten almost instantly because that's the cheap, safe, short term profitable solution, instead of putting more energy into something that will stick with kids long into their adult years while still being relevant to an older audience.

They’ve shot themselves in the foot on several occasions. Hiring Kimiko Glenn for the movie is in my opinion the biggest one. Her voice is so beautiful, iconic, unique, and all around irreplaceable. She has such a gorgeous cadence that her voice is synonymous with Izzy in my mind. Therefore, she is the most noticeably different voice among the main cast and it’s jarring. Then there’s the total disregard towards the lore, considering on multiple occasions FiM established that the world is basically doomed without magic. I was okay with the canon presented in the movie because that crystal artifact felt more like something that _already_ existed, and not something created by Twilight for some arbitrary reason. _And oh fucking god while we’re on Twilight…_ I preferred that in the movie, the original Mane Six were only vaguely referenced, and never by name. It felt like we could write G4 off as if it’s heavily modified historical fiction in the eyes of G5, but now we can’t. Twilight Sparkle _exists_ in canon. She was mentioned by name, her voice is there… and she DESTROYS the _ONE THING_ that is consistently shoved in your face OVER AND OVER again in G4; friendship and harmony _ARE_ magic. I know a thing or two about character building, and having watched Friendship is Magic multiple times since I was nine years old, I can definitively say that Twilight would _never_ let magic be broken like that. I wanted to believe that the crystals were separated _after_ the Mane Six were long dead. But Make Your Mark sat in the way of that headcanon, and now I can’t excuse this flaw.

Honestly, we don't know if the Mane Six were all around when Twilight did the thing, given she would likely have been immortal like Celestia and Luna are, outliving any other pony around. Though by that logic, you'd think Cadence would've been around to maybe talk some sense into Twilight unless she left with Celestia and Luna and never came back, leaving Twilight to make decisions that, while she has experience if it's been several generations, she's still a flawed person and can do impulsive things with good intention
@Kerogoth2 жыл бұрын
@@ToHoldNothing Unfortunately, the recent episode with hologram Twilight has her in her younger form, which means the crystals were made before she got all tall, when the Mane 6 were still alive. Personally though, I'm taking this as a sign that we're looking at a split timeline. The series finale with Tall Twilight takes place in a timeline where Twilight successfully defeated Opaline with the Magic of Friendship, and G5 takes place in a timeline where the magic of friendship failed and Twilight had to resort to the unity crystals. Salty G4 fan headcanon? Maybe, but it does explain a great deal of inconsistencies.

It really sucks that G5 has to tie back to G4 because there are good concepts like exploring earth pony magic, that are really interesting. If G5 was just set in another world or universe, the writers could have a fresh start, and not have to focus on keeping continuity of this and this. The writes could focus on these new concepts without having to worry about pre-established lore and cannon. (And they also wouldn’t have to undo and ruin everything G4 set up)

It was fine for the movie, it set up so many questions where nearly anything could explain what happened over the long years. The issue to me, is moreso the way it doesn't make sense. See, we're about ten episodes into G5. Ten episodes into G4, we had a similar setup: an Earth Pony town, a Pegasi town, and a Unicorn town. (and one vague mention of Manehatten or Fillydelphia, can't remember which.) The difference is... G4 somehow made it work. And I think that's because G4 told us how it all fits together. We learn quickly that Celestia rules a nation, Equestria, and Canterlot is the capital. We learn that Ponyville has a mayor, and that mayor leads the town but technically answers to Celestia. We aren't told who leads Cloudsdale, but it's easy to understand they also answer to Celestia. With G5... what is actually the situation? We're led to believe that Phyllis is the mayor of Maretime Bay (though we're never told that), for some reason Alphabittle is the de-facto representative for Bridlewood (even though we've only seen him running a bar), and Queen Haven is... queen of Zephyr Heights. Or is she queen of all of Equestria now? We have no idea, because we're not told. Is Equestria one unified nation? Is it three separate nation states? No clue. And because of that, the world feels small. Like little, disconnected bubbles. It's hard to imagine a world beyond it, because we can't even imagine what we have as one whole piece.

I only watched the movie and I don't even remember half of it, but I feel like the cutiemarks are really underplayed. They were a symbol that could quickly be tied to a character and they also told you something important about that character. With the 3D animation, I feel like you can't see it clearly most of the time. This could have been a fun opportunity to change up the cutiemark style into something that's bigger than an image on a flank. It could have been something more complex that takes up more space on a pony like vines wrapping around the legs instead of a picture of a leaf. Just anything to make it more visible honestly. (Sidenote: G4 had something really good with easy to comprehend character designs. The 2D aspect made it easy for kids to try and replicate that style in their own art. Not only that though, the mane 6 were basically a rainbow of colors. They were a set of ponies that could really appeal to kids. The designs in G5 may be cute but they don't fit together the same. There's too much orange and blue with a sudden pop of white from Zipp. There was more balance in G4.) (Also I'm not even going to go into the Twilight thing. Why haven't the wendigos eaten everyone yet? If earth ponies never had magic, what about all that magical stuff and why didn't everyone starve without the earth ponies' making up most of the farming or food industry? How did the others manage their own food and what was that like? Why does Twilight look younger than she did at the end of the show? Are Celestia and Luna still alive? Etc... But at the end of the day, like Saberspark said, I'm not the demographic they're angling for anymore, and as long as the kids are enjoying the new show then it's all good, they're not doing anything morally wrong. The vision given by Lauren Faust truly made G4 stand out, and straight up saved it from being another subpar marketing ploy meant to cater to infant children. The writing was rich, had depth and was trying to convey stories, with overarching plot lines and characters that were likable, relatable and had charm. G5 on the other hand feels neutered, feeling like a step back into that money-first-quality-after mentality Hasbro clearly likes to go for for basically any other MLP product that isn’t FIM. While I’ve enjoyed the first movie and the cast of characters (despite even those not being as good as FIM, IMO), everything subsequent to it failed to inherit the sheer sophistication that came with G4, something I foresaw before we even got the first glimpse of A New Generation. The magic, no pun intended, has been voided. But do I believe that we’ll ever get any good MLP content in the future, similar to G4? I like to remain hopeful, but unfortunately it looks like the current G5 will not take any of those stepping stones to embellish itself with the same coating its predecessor had. Here’s hoping someone out there will have the same epiphany Lauren Faust did.

Did you know some people did not like Twilight's final appearance as a big tall pony. They thought she looked too much like Celestia, a recoloured Celestia for that matter. I also find it strange Twilight would grow that big within twenty years when Luna who obviously of course lived way before Twilight got around never got such a dramatic growth spurt. Its also a shame Equestria did not continue to have a royal family who would keep the land and ponies in harmony too. You would think Twilight would become really long-lived like the royal sisters and be able to rule for ages , which makes me wonder how long G5 takes place after G4. Perhaps this means Opaline is way more powerful than what has been shown and is the reason for the division of Equestria and the loss of magic. If so that would be a really epic opportunity for the show. Just a few thoughtss...

I think that spark that you're looking for is the spark that Lauren Faust actually created in G4, because she said in an interview that everything she created and thought of was everything that she had created and thought of as a little girl playing with the G1/G2 figures that she had while growing up and remember a lot of the names from G4 Ponies were the only real connections to previous generations along with the dragon called Spike, she had created her own world and was passionate about it and she was happy to actually make that simple playtime imagination event a reality, which is why it seemed like it was so much better, because technically it was something that had existed long before it was a show idea for others to view, it was just a little girl's fun time with her imagination and then she became a woman, was able to trasform it into reality for others to enjoy. So G4 will always be the best MLP in my opinion, because it had true magic The Magic of a child's imagination you know the thing we lose when we go from child to adult, that vivid imagination once we become adults it goes away in reality kicks in, yeah that, however G5 seems like it's going to be an okay watch, in comparison to a lot of the other stuff on Netflix. I think everyone's biggest concern is that they had to make G5 tied to G4 which is something that's never been done in any of the previous G1/2/3 generations other than certain Pony names and a Dragon named Spike. but if Hasbro decides, and they have, G5 is related to G4 they kind of force a certain obligation to fans of G4, that if done wrong is going to destroy the G5 series, but if done correctly will actually help boost sales, so far it's looking okay but not really anything above and beyond but it is still at an early stage so they could improve upon it, but I have to agree with you the little dragon is kind of annoying in a way like Flurry Heart was, but he seems to be necessary for whatever they've got planned in the future of the show so it looks like he's here to stay.

Maybe the My Little Pony franchise would be better off without Hasbro getting in the way. Maybe it's time for Hasbro to let it go. Not destroy it at all! I'm not saying that. I'm more saying, to sell it off to another company, like Universal, or anyone, before they end up turning their ponies into uncanny valley demon babies.
@sunboltgift711 Жыл бұрын
@@davidhileman8567 Hasbro has actually been doing a good job on a lot of things, they're redoing Hero Quests which is to the exact near replica of the Milton Bradley version before Games Workshop took it over, minus a few things that they could not purchase such as the chaos word use, so it's now Dread, which is actually kind of Cooler because Dreadful in my opinion would be worse than chaos, chaos is just unexpected not necessarily evil but not really good either and I think they're doing pretty good on G5 compared to what others would do. Disney for example is a trashy company that has its hands in all other once separate companies, like Marvel, LucasArts, etc, other than a few things being okay I do not support Disney, so it doesn't really matter what they've got it's a company embedded with too much disgusting things in its history and I know at one time they tried to purchase MLP from Hasbro and Hasbro declined and I'm so glad they did, Universal is not that good of a company, they work with a lot of other too big to give a damn companies and have also been known for the Fast and Furious Fiasco that smuggled real weapons into South America, arming drug cartels, next thing you know they'll be smuggling dope inside Pony plushies. Hasbro has a good thing going and I'm pretty sure they could come up with a lot more things too like board games, video games, Etc. If you're upset about G5 for whatever reason it's barely started but it still seems interesting, give it more time. I don't really see why people have a lot of hate for G5, sure it's no G4 and never will be, but it's still better than having a franchise just sitting around collecting dust waiting to be used, the only problem is yes they did tie it into G4 meaning they've got a lot of responsibilities, people just need to realize if it's something you don't like and for good reason, then voice your concerns of criticism to see if it'll improve or not then move on, but if you hate it just because it's not exactly what you want and it makes you angry then go make something yourself that would be to your liking, I don't mean you personally I mean anybody who thinks or feels that particular way, most people have this entitlement syndrome nowadays that they have to get what they want when they want if there's any slight difference they complain I blame it on the participation ribbons people have had it easy so since there's no problem they have to create a problem just to complain, and I believe you're forgetting one important thing, Hasbro is a toy company, Hasbro has been great at making toys for many generations, even if it fails in movies or shows it won't in the toy industry, which is also declining because most kids now prefer electronic play items, over handheld physical dolls, toys Etc. Not sure where the idea of them selling came from, but I doubt they will because it's a money maker they still own the rights to the pony molds and I'm sure those molds are pumping out plastic ponies like crazy and that's making them quite a bit of money, would other companies like to get a hold of it? Sure, but would Hasbro be stupid enough to sell? I don't believe so.

Or maybe a continuation of the better G4, maybe where the ponies land in the real (live action) world, Pete's Dragon or Enchanted style. I mean, computers would make the job of putting even 2D characters in a live action setting easier than around the time of Pete's Dragon's release, when the PC industry had pretty much just begun, with the Apple II, and the TRS-80 (even all we had for home video games was the recently-launched Atari 2600), but still, computers were still quite rare, and they stuck with the harder (but still pretty good-looking) practical effects of the time.

As someone who had a chance to work directly on something G5 related on an official capacity last year when working on the G5 console game, I had the privilege to see a good portion of the G5 movie many months early before it officially launched. It honestly hyped me up a ton, knowing there was such a high quality piece of media to open up G5 with, and I got very passionate in doing G5 right with the gameplay animation work I did. It set the bar extremely high, and I wanted to be as close to that bar as possible. But sometime down the line, I started to realize how our game project was just not on the same caliber as the movie. Like, not even close. We had only about a dozen people on average to work on this game for just under a year, in contrast to the Movie's many hundreds with many years to work on it. I'm pretty sure Atomic Cartoons with the G5 series is in a similar boat, just not to the absolute extreme. They do have hundreds of people working on G5 there, but they have to create several hours of 3D animated content per year probably, so time is still no doubt extremely tight. In retrospect, while I still absolutely adore the G5 movie, Hasbro essentially cursed G5 by essentially jumping the shark literally on its first go with the movie, and set up G5 to just decline afterwards. And of course not to mention that Hasbro definitely has, and always probably will only care if the series is good enough to appeal to kids that contributes to their toy sales. In that regard, perhaps its the right business decision, but an absolutely horrible artistic decision. I've talked to a couple people that have worked on the G5 series, and it's not like they don't care about the quality of their work, similar to the position I was in with the game. It's just the allocation of funding and time from the corporate heads that severely limit what the people directly working on these shows can do (as well as writing direction to an extent. It wouldn't surprise me if Hasbro pushed that baby dragon HARD to be included. G4 has a lot of moments where you can tell that "Yeah, Hasbro definitely tried to push this thing in to sell a line of toy merch", so it's not something that's out of the question in my eyes).

Oh hey, fancy seeing you here! Imo the game animations are way smoother and expressive. Pegasi do look like they're actually flying and not just awkwardly floating, and generally the animations feel more grounded in the world. Facial animations are higher quality and show a wider range of emotions. I work in gamedev though, so I don't have much knowledge about animation industry, the average budget of an animated show and the time constraints. Either way, I think you did an amazing job for A Maretime Bay Adventure and I am actually a big fan of your channel :)
@DJTHED2 жыл бұрын
@@Anvynn Creating a whole 3D series compared to a 3D game I feel is a lot more work, at least from the animation and rendering perspective. For games, you mostly have to work on a set of short but many gameplay animations, and if the budget allows, cutscenes too every so often. But for MYM, they will probably have to animate and render many, many hours of content per year, with more ambitious goals for what such a series should try to do visually. One thing to think about is how adding more characters per shot can start to shoot production costs extremely high should each of those characters require unique animation. Animation takes a lot of time, even with a lower quality standard. So having many characters to animate in a large portion of shots that fill up several hours of watchtime... It's a lot. This is just the animation side of things too, there's a lot more departments that go through similar workload strains.

Yeah I’ve also a lot of mixed feelings about G5. It’s a step back in a lot of ways. G5 really feels like it’s a kids show, whereas G4 felt like a FAMILY show. The key difference being g4 is something that the parents could sit down and enjoy with their kids. I did feel some of the later episodes got better, so my hope is that the writers slowly get better and better as time goes on. I’m not counting on it or holding my breath, but it is a hope. Also…I really wish we could have kept the voice actors from the movie. They were wonderful and the new voices are….fine, but noticeably weaker. I’ve noticed a number of pretty flat deliveries and just….overall lackluster performances.

I really prefer the style of G4 overall. I dont mind 3d animation, but there was so much lost in the art and character design when they changed to 3d. Even with smth like the eye shapes. You can easily tell which one is Fluttershy based on how her eye is drawn but with 3d models it feels like theres a base model that they have to contort to (likely for toy making purposes) and with the hairstyles i was extremely fond of the iconic way the hair was drawn in G4. I feel like this was also because some of the more flashy hairstyles didnt translate very well (Twilight's hair didnt for me at least) and to make it more natural they just toned all of it down to match the animation. There's a lot of little things I'll miss that dont think they can carry quite the same from 2d to 3d such as the effects such as dust clouds when characters move too fast or really exaggerated expressions.
@Corgipon2 жыл бұрын
Honestly, I agree with what you’re saying about the smartphones. I don’t like how contemporary and technology-heavy G5 is. Makes it very dated and separates it further from the earlier generations. It would be better if Pipp were some sort of popular performer or musician since influencers are just a product of our time. Oh, and the fact they can carry things with their *flat* hooves and make them defy physics and gravity _bothers_ me. I also feel like it just takes away the escapism as well. The world of MLP was originally more natural and magical, which is the perfect escape from the troubles of the real world. Just shoehorning in gadgets and lifestyles that help cause these big problems for us in real life just defeats the purpose, and it’s likely those ponies have the same problems we do in real life. And the bad part: it’s not just them who turned tech-heavy. Several other non-fashion doll toylines that are marketed towards girls and were initially fantasy/more natural are becoming the same thing. All social-media centric and overly contemporary.
@juan08082 жыл бұрын
I think the problem of having technology is bigger than that. As it also becomes a hindrance for the plot. A smartphone is basically a GPS, a communication and recording device and an encyclopedia all rolled into one. A lot of fantasy tropes and adventures get instantly nullified by having smartphones.

With G4, Equestria was one of those places a lot of people would've loved to live in, much like the Wizarding World, or Star Wars. And it's easy to understand why; ponies are generally kind, there's cool magic and potions to explore, fantastical creatures, exciting adventures, and an old-timey charm - an escape from the hustle and stress of the modern world. And G5 somehow avoids all of that. Because of the focus on bigotry (and the occasional mocking viral trend), ponies don't seem any kinder than humans. Magic and potions aren't explored, with no sorcerers or apothecaries mentioned (we get one mention of a 'cloaking spell,' but otherwise unicorns have only used levitation with no interest in anything else), the only fantastical creature is a baby dragon (unless you want to count a poodle with wings as 'fantastical'), so far no big adventures (which is fair, slice of life is a valid and enjoyable approach... in a world worth being in), and the existence of smart phones brought all of the modern world's troubles into Equestria: ponies glued to their phones, ponies chasing likes and followers, ponies mocking you because they caught the perfect loop of you getting hurt on camera. G5 isn't a world I want to live in, and I have a hard time imagining anyone would want to be in it beyond the fact that it's still a bit better than the real world. ... But hey, at least world hunger is solved because your house can be crushed by a giant grape grown by any pesky kid in their sleep, right?
@davidhileman8567 Жыл бұрын
You know what? That's exactly what I would say. In fact, I would say a better idea than this whole thing would be to create not really a G4 reboot, but sort of an alternate continuity, like, right before the 2017 movie, a spell is being cast from the G5 continuity as it's being destroyed by Windigos because of the unkindness of the ponies, thus bringing G5 to a fitting end, and creating another continuity, maybe where the residents of Equestria get thrown into the real world. The world of Equestria would end up merging with the real world, and the ponies would end up immortalized by the spell, but some (only SOME, more notably Celestia and Luna, mainly to obtain balance to the world and science.) of the ponies' magic would be weakened, not wiped out, but weakened, and the ponies would try to both adapt to, and bring some of their philosophies to our world. Sort of like "Enchanted", but the ponies would stay 2D. It would make a very good use of real-life actors being filmed alongside the ponies (we call it the Roger Rabbit Effect). I would really like to see how the ponies would interact with the real (live action) world.

There's something that makes me so uncomfortable seeing modern tech go into a medieval & high-magic setting. I felt that way when Avatar went from Aang to Korra, and also in many D&D games/fantasy books etc. The magic is what kept things interesting and the tech just makes one or the other obsolete.
@MrFelblood2 жыл бұрын
Well, once you hint at an industrial revolution, it's pretty hard to explain why there still hasn't been one two generations later. You can't have hot air balloons and steam tanks in Avatar, unless you are ready for blimp and even bigger steam tanks in Korra. You can't have instant communication and printing press spells in G4 without people expecting some kind of Ever After High style magic smartphones in G5. You can't introduce FTL transporters in the Kirk era unless you want to completely bone over anyone who was trying to make that universe into a franchise. You get the idea.

@@shagohad3 not necessarily, magic itself is often linked to creature that uses it, so often you cannot really industrialize it (and even when imbue magic into objects is thing, then not really on scale of thousands, hundreds of thousands or even millions of units - that requires some old school mostly non-magical industrialization, so mages are not dying from exhaustion all the time) In world involving magic, technology would be primarily response of those not having magic abilities to compensate their lack of magic and to level the powers of both "camps". Magic also can be used for incredibly speed up development process - for example metal bending from avatar would turn years going process of developing any machine and establishing production into matter of months, if not just weeks, solely by turning building bunch of prototypes, tooling, assembly line for all of it and reworking it all multiple times with every tweak of design necessitated by results of testing, into few moments of concentration.

As a player of a steampunk RP game that's lasted many years, adding tech to a D&D setting makes it so much better. As a Shadowrun player, I can safely say there is a line though, and smart phones are crossing that line. Shadowrun 4e is truly awful, and is the MLP G5 of RP games. Korra's setting was the best part about the series though. That steampunk moment is the point where creativity is as free as it can get. Magictech blimps and ships, firing enchanted cannons. Traveling the world and exploring, the mix between mechanical golems and undead creatures blend well as terrifying lifeless enemies. There's so much you can't do in a fully medieval setting. I feel like you're lumping all tech together. But airships were are amazing in fantasy settings are not at all like someone's remote controlled drone. Modern tech yeah, avoid it. None of that is fun to push into a fantasy world at all. But fantasy tech is the best. So many modern things can essentially be recreated in such a world, with magic as the main ingredient, and it's just better for it. Remove phones, and put in enchanted orbs of water that can reflect images from other such orbs. Have them powered by sunlight, and you can even recreate the need to get a good signal. Modern tech, but done right, done in a way that fits the world. That's how it should be done. MLP G5 fails at that so damn hard. But Korra did it well from what I remember.

Gen 4, while different, still held the same kinds of nostalgia for someone who's loved MLP since I was really little. Especially with some of the characters brought back that I grew up with, even though they had different personalities or were different kinds of ponies. (Rainbow Dash wasn't always a headstrong pegasus.) That said, as an OG fan of the franchise, I agree with you. Although I keep an ear out because I'm curious about the lore and what happened to the ponies of gen 4, I'm not a huge fan of gen 5. I feel it loses me with making one pony an influencer and just having the internet there in general. Also, yeah, I feel the loss of the fantasy element when they bring in smart phones. I think what made g4 special was the character designs and the fact that it was a well written show that just happened to also be targeted towards little girls. As someone who was a little girl who watched g4 when it came out, I absolutely loved the show and so did my parents. G5 seems like it has a ton of potential, but I feel like a lot of it was wasted by making it connected to g4. Even then, if they still had it connected to g4 I think it would of been better to keep the fantasy setting instead of making it more modern. I feel like making that decision makes it feel closer to the g1.5 series which was just ponies in the real world in modern society. That never worked. There’s also more to be desired with the designs. Its cute and all, but I think if they went into the direction that G2 went into it would be more appealing for all audiences. I’m not a fan of the more stubby features that the ponies have. Sorry for the essay, I’m just very passionate about this.

What really didn’t set well with me was how it wasn’t a cold winter and it didn’t show the Windigos. When the 3 races divide, the Windigos showed up. That’s the main thing I wanted for this show, to have the same lore of g4 and build off of that. Because let’s be real, the main people who watches g5 are the one who loves/grew up with g4. It’ll be better if they explained about what happened in the past with the lack of magic. But If I could remember, pegasi could still fly during the Windigos.

I thought the windigos would be a thing if this is rooted in g4.

This was absolutely my problem too! When I found out they separated the pony races, I was like where are the Wendigos? They provided a base of why friendship between ponies was so important. G4 had such good world building that was so fun and so cared for and I miss it

I think the Windigos would make the perfect ending to this generation.

When I was little, I had a ton of My Little Pony toys. I had about 10 of them and I loved them. I love the cuteness of the older models, the old toys and what I've seen of the animated shows, but these 3D models scream uncanny valley for me. I don't like that they don't look like ponies anymore. Their faces just look like an unidentifiable blob and I wish they would add more definition to their muzzles. But that's just me.

Also how the magic became worthless. Remember the task of King Sombra and all the spells Twilight learned? Gravitokinesis, crystallization, teleportation, transformation, speed enhancement, sealing techniques... It was a MAGIC SYSTEM. Not just a "whatever the character want to do will do"

one thing I don't like about the new 3d models is that the inside mouth color is different for every pony. Misty's inside-mouth color is a dark purple and it freaks me out everytime.

Saturating the franchise with smartphones and "le current trends" definitely saps all of the magic and wonder out of it. Gen 4 could stand on its own regardless of which point in time because it didn't rely on the "current thing" or current year as a crutch. It was just its own nice, self-contained show.

Also I believe Imalou was the lead character designer and illustrator who worked on the new MLP generation and movie while they were also one of the most popular artists in the fandom since they started doing MLP fan art in 2011-2012! Of course they are an absolutely amazing artist who is definitely worth supporting! :)

If only Hasbro didn’t force G5 to connect to G4 it would have a much better chance to stand on its own. Hasbro has more than enough money to make G5 special but they just want to rake in the cash using nostalgia and bright 3D animation that a lot of younger kids love looking at.

I'm glad someone is reviewing it because I couldn't make it 5 minutes into the new show. (I did manage the movie) As someone who became a fan Ironically, ( I watched it to see what all the fuss was about and fell in love with Twilight and the plot) This hurts my soul at how terribly written the story is. I also didn't like the end of G4 with the school but I would've been happy if those character were actually the new main 6 rather than this...

See, the MLP world of smartphones as opposed to magic could have worked if magic were treated like a lost art that’s seen as more of a legend in the public conscious (as opposed to an outright event causing it) and our main pony being a secret alicorn is what gives her the drive to rediscover the lost (as opposed to sealed) magic, maybe even give her a love of history similar to Twilight’s love of reading. Then you’d have our main character going about this modern life with her friends while uncovering where magic has become dormant and in the background we see the main villain following her trail and collecting the newly awakened magic for herself. You can even pander to G4 fans while still being its own show by having episodes where they find ruins of G4 places (like finding Cloudsdale before technology automated the weather process) It’s sad because the setting and general premise COULD HAVE WORKED if they had any confidence in their own creativity.

What drives me crazy is the movie gave me the impression Sunny would explore how things came to be the way they are. In the show, Sunny doesn't, but we get a weird scene where this kid comes up to Sunny and just says, "I've been reading this book about these magic rocks called elements!" and that's the end of the scene. Somehow this kid does more research than Sunny. It's a half-second reference to appease people, rather than trying to have some interesting storytelling dynamic.
