Yeah it's inaccurate to say Xavier: Renegade Angel didn't stick out because pretty much everyone who watched Adult Swim in the late 00s remembers it for how utterly surreal it was even by Adult Swim standards, I can't say I liked it (at least not at the time) but I sure as heck remember it. I actually liked this show when I was a teenager in the late 2000's. My favourite episode was the one where Six gets arrested but the one where Chode kills God is a close second. I didn't know there was a film or that it was made in my Canada where I'm from.

You are wrong! This show is classic. Every episode dealing with the Clowns is hysterical. For example, in the riff on the film Fantastic Voyage, we see Chode, Gus and the nephew shrink down inside their ship to go inside Darth BoBo's body. When they take over his speech center while Darth is at the table with his wife Bernice. Everything is hysterical. In other episodes you have situations that are just out of this world. A riff on the Bill Clinton scandal, the beauty contest and so much more. I would urge everyone who viewed this to watch the show.

Hypothesis: "Traditional" cartoons- ones that are hand-drawn, or made to look like it- provide a kind of buffer that makes it more tolerable for them to tackle adult topics. CGI is made to look real, or hyper-real; even if characters don't look like *people*, they usually look like physical objects that exist in some kind of physically inhabited world. So adult topics in CG worlds make us that little bit more uncomfortable, that little bit more like we're watching something embarrassing rather than being "told a story". Call it a side effect of the Uncanny Valley, perhaps.

It almost feels like a disservice that the games with the graphics closest to photo-realism are often also the least likely to take a deep look at the themes in the game, largely for reasons of budget/audience calculations.

Not just the tackling of adult themes but whether it is done for comedy is a huge factor. The less real something looks, the more we can laugh at dark jokes because we're so aware it isn't real and there are no real victims for whom we should empathise or sympathise. If serious topics are treated seriously it doesn't matter if it's animated or not.
