I want to share my story. As a child, I walked with a friend near my house, on the playground. And towards the end of the day I found a dirty CD on the ground. It was without labels and packaging. I brought it home, dusted it off, and decided to see what was written on it. There were only 3 video clips. Two of them are not interesting, but the last one was this video clip, Ich Will. I watched it several times, at full volume. That was the beginning of my love for Rammstein. Then I was about 10 years old. It's been 21 years, and I'm watching this clip, as if for the first time, with delight

The music video was released in Germany on September 10, 2001, but many channels did not air the music video (which was to debut on U.S. television the next evening) as it was released the day before the September 11 attacks. Also, the police officers in the video were real and not actors. They taught the band how to fall on the ground without hurting themselves and how to act when they get their handcuffs on. All of the band members except for Ollie and Flake have handicaps in the video. Till has a crippled right leg. He has to walk with a crutch. Paul has burn marks on his face. Richard has one hand that is a plastic hand, through which he has no sense of touch. This explains why he starts the alarm. He didn’t feel how he pushed the button. Schneider has one eye missing and has a glass eye in its place.

The lyrics are what makes the message even more chilling. It shows how insane humanity is. And when the crowd is singing the chorus during a real concert, they play into the message and often without even realizing it. However, I love how they critique media, social media and especially the people falling for it. And boy, do they play their audience, too.

I assume the inspiration for the song and the video was a true crime. In 1988 there was a bank heist in Germany (Gladbeck), after which the perpetrators fled and took hostages. During the escape, journalists conducted several interviews with the perpetrators and obstructed police work. After 54 hours of flight through almost half of Germany, the perpetrators were caught. Two hostages and a policeman were killed. The behavior of the journalists, who hindered the work of the police due to their close proximity to the events, later sparked an intensive public debate. In the video Rammstein seems to provoke media attention by the heist, not primarely to steal money. The line "Wir wollen in Beifall untergehen." (We want to drown in applause.) indicates it. The live version of this song (e.g. Ich will - live from Hurricane Festival 2016) shows a great involvement of the audiance.

The video and the song reminds me of a criminal case in Germany. In particular the Gladbeck hostage taking. It is a criticism of the media, which interviewed the hostage takers live during their kidnapping and thus gave them excessive attention. I can't shake the feeling that the media still resents Rammstein for this to this day. Sorry for my english.

I remember in the early days of youtube, say 06-2010, this song was fucking IMPOSSIBLE to find with the music video. There were fanmade uploads with still images from the video, or the video with the wrong audio, so if you wanted to show this to a friend you had to find one of the video uploads and mute it and time the audio in another window to it 😂😂 I was so happy when they officially uploaded it lol.

Theres always a story behind their songs this one in particular. The Gladbeck hostage-taking (also known as the Gladbeck hostage crisis) was a high-profile crime in West Germany and the Netherlands in the summer of 1988, during which three people lost their lives. The bank robbery with the subsequent taking of hostages began in Gladbeck in North Rhine-Westphalia and ended after around 54 hours on Autobahn 3 near Bad Honnef with an access by the Cologne police's special task force (SEK). In the aftermath of the crime, the behavior of the police and reporters was massively criticized and a social debate about the responsibility and limits of journalism was initiated.The behavior of the journalists, who hindered the work of the police due to their close proximity to the events, later sparked an intensive public debate. Among other things, several interviews were conducted with the perpetrators, a press photographer acted as a liaison to the police and a Cologne journalist rode in the getaway car to show the perpetrators the way out of the city centre. The Gladbeck hostage-taking is an important subject of investigation in media system research. Explanation from another poster so thanks for the effort. the live version is amazing, there is really a dialogue between Till and the audience who reply to him in the chorus part: Till : Könnt ihr mich hören? (Can you hear me?) Audience: Wir hören dich (We can hear you!) Till: Könnt ihr mich sehen? (Can you see me?) Audience: Wir sehen dich (We can see you!) Till: Könnt ihr mich fühlen? (Can you feel me?) Audience: Wir fühlen dich (We can feel you!) Till: Ich versteh euch nicht (I dont uderstand you...) in the last chorus, Till replaces "mich" (me) by "uns" (us), and the audience "dich" (you singular) by "euch" (you plural)

I recommend checking out the "making of" the Ich Will music video, it offers a lot of insight. It is the first time they deliberately created out a sort of call/response with their music, when they play this live it is amazing to be there in the thick of it, when Till says he want to see our hands, you see an entire stadium of people raise their hands - in Paris this year he even shouted in French "Raise your hands!!" after singing that line. it is a great song and a great music video, and brilliant for a stadium sized crowd in live performances!
