Beyond a doubt, the most magnificent voice of our time. Intelligence, elegance, masterful control and an uncanny ability to totally convey the sense of the lyrics with nothing ever "showy." I do believe there has never been anyone better.

Magique, éthéré...Et la voix de S.Devieilhe me semble correspondre absolument à ce style de mélodies doux, évanescent, presque douloureux de cette fin de siècle " romantique français" ... attachant G.Fauré.

In sleep made sweet by a vision of you I dreamed of happiness, fervent illusion, Your eyes were softer, your voice pure and ringing, You shone like a sky that was lit by the dawn; You called me and I departed the earth To flee with you toward the light, The heavens parted their clouds for us, We glimpsed unknown splendours, celestial fires. Alas, alas, sad awakening from dreams! I summon you, O night, give me back your delusions; Return, return in radiance, Return, O mysterious night!

¡Ay! ¡Ay, triste despertar de los sueños! Yo te llamo, oh noche, devuélveme tus mentiras. Vuelve, vuelve radiante, vuelve, ¡oh noche misteriosa!

She has one of the most crystal clear voices I have ever heard. The interpretation of the text is so expressive, and both singer and pianist captured the understated elegance of Faure. I’ve taught and accompanied this song dozens of times, and this is an excellent model for my students to listen to. I’m afraid I might get attacked for this, but there is a small flaw in the singing that keeps the sparkle of this gem from absolute perfection. Several times, beginning with the first three notes, Sabine sings with a straight tone that has a slight edge to it. Once her lovely vibrato comes into play, her singing is exquisite. I also think there were some missed opportunities for some subtle rubato.
@manthasagittarius16 ай бұрын
I noticed that too. Almost the effect (although far richer sound) of the tone evoked for renaissance sacred music in high reverb performance spaces. I wonder if it is for contrast with the lovely, light vibrato that follows? In any case, it's a choice that sculpts the phrases. And the phrasing is, as it should be, text-first and (does it make sense to say it) emotionally pure.

@@jesskiaunismusic but had she had a well developed chest voice, her low notes wouldn't just disappear, and had she had a well developed falsetto register, her top notes wouldn't be so small and shrill.

@@celibidache1000 thank you. She also sings straight tones a lot of the time. Ok for early music I guess. A bit distracting in this genre.
@celibidache10002 жыл бұрын
@@1stdivaofkiff50 The curse of the early music straight tone. Why do people think early music should sound like that? Firstly, a straight tone is always a tension from resisting the natural physiological mechanics of the voice; secondly, there is no data of any kind supporting this idea that people in earlier times used to sing without vibrato, on the contrary, numerous written sources give evidence FOR vibrato. The non-vibrato thing was most likely baselessly invented in the early music movement of the 1960s and forward. On the other hand, most opera singers today have too big a vibrato, where you barely hear what note they are attempting to sing.
