I remember watching this show as a teen. 3 years ago when Jon Sable creator, Mike Grell was in NYC for a convention, I had the pleasure of meeting him. I mentioned the show to him, telling him I was one of the few people who actually watched the show when it came out. He jokingly said that probably only me, him, and his mother-in- law watched the show. LOL.

No, I and my family were also watching. :) It was one of those shows that I was really rooting for as a teen, but it seemed like it never found its footing and was cancelled almost as soon as it was greenlit. I never forgot it though.

I watched it, with disappointment, but agreed with Grell that Rene Russo was well cast. The early prime time timeslot, on Saturdays (as I recall) killed any chance of it being like the comics.

@@jeffnettleton3858 Plus as Mike Grell complained, they basically turned him into a masked vigilante like Batman. The whole point that Mike Grell created Jon Sable in the first place was to get away from all that superhero stuff. He's a mercenary (with code of honor) - not some altruistic do-gooder.

+Lee Sharp There aren't any professionally-made DVD sets. You might find some amateur efforts somewhere on the Internet. Try eBay. You might find one at a large comic book convention.

The nitpicker in me wants to know when he went into the building, went up to the roof, rigged his rappelling line and did he leave it there, after he left?

The bald FBI guy is an actor named Tony Lincoln. I did some work with him in Chicago in the late 70s. A great guy with a good singing voice and a wild sense of humor.

His gun was always empty with the exception of the second episode. Just having the .357 Magnum long barrel with the laser sight pointed at someone was quite intimidating. See "The Hunt" episode to understand why the gun was loaded.

It would be great for this and "American Flagg" to have a streaming show.

In the comics, he carried a Mauser.

Mike Grell said in an interview that There is a shot in this pilot of Gene Simmons as sable. He said that he's wearing a trench coat and you look closely you can tell. It might be at 7:21. I don't know for certain.

Cool. I am currently doing an annotated issue-by-issue retrospective of the comic on my channel. This is one piece of Jon Sable I have never seen.

An early script toyed with the idea of Nicholas Flemming, not Sable, being perceived as gay. Even in this version, his cab-hailing is a bit flamboyant. Originally, a secretary said to another, "What a waste," referring to Sable's good looks. That was changed to the "oil and water" remark.

.357 Magnum??? Nope. Sable carried a .50 DESERT EAGLE, but the imposter Sable did carry and used a .44 Magnum.
@jeffnettleton38583 жыл бұрын
The Desert Eagle came in .357 and .44 Magnum versions, at first.

Producer Dick Rosetti said in an interview that the pilot had been filmed "several" times. I know Gene Simmons of KISS was Sable in one of them. I've read the network thought he was too plump. I don't know if there were other changes in the cast.

At different points, Mel Gibson and Eddie Murphy were interested in playing Sable, in a film.

Didn't Sable carry a gun w/ only one bullet?
@jeffnettleton38583 жыл бұрын
Confusing him with Barney Fife. Sable just carried his unloaded, in the tv series. In the comics, it was always loaded and usually used. In later stories, he also had a .375 H&H pepperbox pistol and a match grade .45 ACP, with compensator and target shooting grips. Also trotted our a Beretta 93-R at the very end of the original series.
